Lorsqu'il fut en présence de David, il se jeta par terre et se prosterna.3David lui demanda: «D'où viens-tu?» L'homme lui répondit: «Je me suis échappé du camp d'Israël.»4David lui dit: «Que s'est-il passé? Dis-le-moi donc!» Il répondit: «Le peuple s'est enfui du champ de bataille; beaucoup d'hommes sont tombés et sont morts. Même Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts.»5David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles: «Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts?»6Le jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles répondit alors: «Je me trouvais sur le mont Guilboa. Or Saül s'appuyait sur sa lance, et les chars et les cavaliers le serraient de près.7Il s'est retourné, m'a aperçu et m'a appelé. J'ai dit: ‘Me voici!’8Il m'a demandé: ‘Qui es-tu?’ Je lui ai répondu: ‘Je suis amalécite.’9Il a dit: ‘Approche-toi donc et donne-moi la mort, car je me sens mal, même si je suis encore plein de vie.’10Je me suis approché de lui et lui ai donné la mort, sachant bien qu'il ne survivrait pas à sa défaite. J'ai retiré la couronne qui était sur sa tête et le bracelet qu'il avait au bras et je te les apporte ici, mon seigneur.»11David attrapa ses habits et les déchira, et tous les hommes qui étaient auprès de lui firent de même.12Ils furent dans le deuil, ils pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu'au soir à cause de Saül, de son fils Jonathan, du peuple de l'Eternel et de la communauté d'Israël, parce qu'ils étaient tombés par l'épée.13David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait apporté ces nouvelles: «D'où viens-tu?» Il répondit: «Je suis le fils d'un étranger, d'un Amalécite.»14David lui dit: «Comment se fait-il que tu n'aies pas eu peur de porter la main contre celui que l'Eternel a désigné par onction et de lui donner la mort?»15Puis David appela l'un de ses hommes et lui dit: «Approche-toi et tue-le!» Cet homme frappa l'Amalécite et celui-ci mourut16tandis que David lui disait: «Que ton sang retombe sur ta tête! En effet, ta bouche a témoigné contre toi, puisque tu as affirmé avoir toi-même donné la mort à celui que l'Eternel avait désigné par onction!»
Oraison funèbre sur Saül et Jonathan
17Voici la complainte que David composa sur Saül et sur son fils Jonathan.18Il ordonna de l'enseigner aux Judéens. C'est la complainte de l'arc, qui figure dans le livre du Juste.19«L'élite d'Israël a été blessée sur tes collines! Comment des héros ont-ils pu tomber?20»Ne l'annoncez pas dans Gath, n'en proclamez pas la nouvelle dans les rues d'Askalon, sinon les filles des Philistins se réjouiraient, les filles des incirconcis triompheraient.21Monts Guilboa, qu'il n'y ait sur vous ni rosée ni pluie, ni champs permettant de faire des offrandes! En effet, c'est là qu'a été jeté le bouclier des héros, le bouclier de Saül. Plus jamais on ne le graissera avec de l'huile.22Devant le sang des blessés, devant la graisse des plus vaillants, l'arc de Jonathan n'a jamais reculé et l'épée de Saül ne retournait pas à vide.23Saül et Jonathan, aimés et chéris pendant leur vie, n'ont pas été séparés dans la mort. Ils étaient plus légers que les aigles, ils étaient plus forts que les lions.24Filles d'Israël, pleurez sur Saül! Il vous habillait d'un cramoisi magnifique, il mettait des ornements d'or sur vos habits.25Comment des héros ont-ils pu tomber au milieu du combat? Comment Jonathan a-t-il pu être blessé sur tes collines?26»Je suis dans la douleur à cause de toi, Jonathan, mon frère! Tu faisais tout mon plaisir. Ton amour pour moi était merveilleux, supérieur à l'amour des femmes.27Comment des héros ont-ils pu tomber? Comment leurs armes ont-elles pu être détruites?»

David hears of Saul’s death
1After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days.2On the third day a man arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honour.3‘Where have you come from?’ David asked him. He answered, ‘I have escaped from the Israelite camp.’4‘What happened?’ David asked. ‘Tell me.’ ‘The men fled from the battle,’ he replied. ‘Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.’5Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, ‘How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?’6‘I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,’ the young man said, ‘and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit.7When he turned round and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, “What can I do?”8‘He asked me, “Who are you?” ‘ “An Amalekite,” I answered.9‘Then he said to me, “Stand here by me and kill me! I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.”10‘So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.’11Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them.12They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.13David said to the young man who brought him the report, ‘Where are you from?’ ‘I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,’ he answered.14David asked him, ‘Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?’15Then David called one of his men and said, ‘Go, strike him down!’ So he struck him down, and he died.16For David had said to him, ‘Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, “I killed the Lord’s anointed.” ’
David’s lament for Saul and Jonathan
17David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan,18and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):19‘A gazelle* lies slain on your heights, Israel. How the mighty have fallen!20‘Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines be glad, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.21‘Mountains of Gilboa, may you have neither dew nor rain, may no showers fall on your terraced fields.* For there the shield of the mighty was despised, the shield of Saul – no longer rubbed with oil.22‘From the blood of the slain, from the flesh of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.23Saul and Jonathan – in life they were loved and admired, and in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.24‘Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and finery, who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.25‘How the mighty have fallen in battle! Jonathan lies slain on your heights.26I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women.27‘How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war have perished!’
