1Jahwe sagte zu Mose: „Pass auf! Für den Pharao habe ich dich zu einem Gott gemacht, und Aaron wird dein Prophet sein.2Du gibst ihm alles weiter, was ich dir befehle, und dein Bruder Aaron wird dann vom Pharao fordern, die Israeliten aus seinem Land ziehen zu lassen.3Ich selbst werde den Pharao starrsinnig machen und werde viele Zeichen und Wunder im Land Ägypten tun.4Der Pharao wird nicht auf euch hören. Deshalb wird Ägypten meine Macht zu spüren bekommen, und ich werde meine Scharen, mein Volk, die Israeliten, unter gewaltigen Strafgerichten aus dem Land Ägypten herausführen.5Die Ägypter sollen erkennen, dass ich Jahwe bin, dessen Macht sie spüren, wenn ich die Israeliten aus ihrem Land wegführe.“6Mose und Aaron machten alles so, wie Jahwe es ihnen dargestellt hatte.7Mose war damals 80 Jahre alt und Aaron 83 Jahre.8Jahwe hatte Mose und Aaron nämlich gesagt:9„Wenn der Pharao verlangt, dass ihr euch durch ein Wunder ausweist, dann sagst du zu Aaron: 'Wirf deinen Stab vor dem Pharao auf den Boden!' Dann wird er zu einer Schlange werden.“10Da gingen Mose und Aaron zum Pharao und taten, was Jahwe ihnen aufgetragen hatte. Aaron warf den Stab vor dem Pharao und seinen Hofbeamten hin und er wurde zur Schlange.11Da rief der Pharao seine Weisen und Zauberer. Diese seine Magier vollbrachten mit ihren Zauberkünsten dasselbe.12Jeder warf seinen Stab auf den Boden und es wurden Schlangen daraus. Doch Aarons Stab verschlang ihre Stäbe.13Der Pharao aber blieb hart. Er hörte nicht auf Mose und Aaron, wie Jahwe es gesagt hatte.
1. Plage: Wasser wird Blut
14Jahwe sagte zu Mose: „Der Pharao bleibt hart. Er weigert sich, das Volk ziehen zu lassen.15Geh morgen früh zu ihm, wenn er ans Wasser hinuntergeht. Nimm den Stab mit, der sich in eine Schlange verwandelt hat, und tritt dem Pharao am Ufer des Nil entgegen!16Sag zu ihm: 'Jahwe, der Gott der Hebräer, hat mich zu dir geschickt und fordert dich auf: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir in der Wüste dient! Aber bis jetzt hast du nicht darauf gehört.17So spricht Jahwe: Jetzt wirst du merken, dass ICH da BIN. Pass auf! Ich werde mit dem Stab in meiner Hand auf das Wasser im Nil schlagen, und es wird sich in Blut verwandeln.18Dann werden die Fische im Nil verenden und der Fluss wird stinken, sodass die Ägypter sich ekeln, Nilwasser zu trinken.'“19Dann sagte Jahwe zu Mose: „Sag Aaron: 'Strecke deinen Stab über alle Gewässer Ägyptens aus, über die Flüsse und Kanäle, die Sümpfe* und alle Wasserstellen! Dann wird alles Wasser in Ägypten zu Blut, selbst das in ‹Gefäßen aus› Holz und Stein.'“*20Mose und Aaron taten, was Jahwe ihnen aufgetragen hatte. Aaron hob den Stab und schlug vor den Augen des Pharao und seiner Hofbeamten auf das Wasser im Nil. Da verwandelte sich alles Wasser im Strom zu Blut.21Die Fische starben, und das Wasser begann zu stinken, sodass die Ägypter das Nilwasser nicht mehr trinken konnten. Im ganzen Land war das Wasser zu Blut geworden.*22Aber die ägyptischen Magier machten es mit ihren Zauberkünsten nach. Deshalb blieb der Pharao hart. Er hörte nicht auf Mose und Aaron, wie Jahwe es gesagt hatte.23Er drehte ihnen den Rücken zu und ging in seinen Palast zurück. Er nahm es nicht ernst.24Alle Ägypter aber gruben in der Umgebung des Nil nach Trinkwasser, denn das Nilwasser* war ungenießbar geworden,25nachdem Jahwe den Nil geschlagen* hatte. So vergingen sieben Tage.
2. Plage: Frösche
26Da sagte Jahwe zu Mose: „Geh zum Pharao und sage ihm: 'So spricht Jahwe: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir dienen kann!27Wenn du dich weigerst, dann pass auf! Ich werde eine Froschplage über dein ganzes Land kommen lassen.28Der Nil wird von Fröschen wimmeln; sie werden das Wasser verlassen und in deinen Palast kommen, in dein Schlafzimmer und in dein Bett. Auch in die Häuser deiner Beamten und des ganzen Volkes werden sie kommen und sich in die Backtröge und Backöfen setzen.29Über dich, dein Volk und alle deine Diener wird diese Froschplage kommen.'“
New International Reader’s Version
1Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I have made you like God to Pharaoh. And your brother Aaron will be like a prophet to you.2You must say everything I command you to say. Then your brother Aaron must tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his country.3But I will make Pharaoh stubborn. I will multiply the signs and amazing things I will do in Egypt.4In spite of that, he will not listen to you. So I will use my powerful hand against Egypt. When I judge them with mighty acts, I will bring my people Israel out like an army on the march.5Then the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD. I will reach out my powerful hand against them. I will bring the people of Israel out of Egypt.’6Moses and Aaron did exactly as the LORD had commanded them.7Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83 when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Aaron’s walking stick becomes a snake
8The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron.9He said, ‘Pharaoh will say to you, “Do a miracle.” When he does, speak to Aaron. Tell him, “Take your walking stick and throw it down in front of Pharaoh.” It will turn into a snake.’10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They did exactly as the LORD had commanded them. Aaron threw the stick down in front of Pharaoh and his officials. It turned into a snake.11Then Pharaoh sent for wise men and people who do evil magic. By doing their magic tricks, the Egyptian magicians did the same things Aaron had done.12Each one threw down his walking stick. Each stick turned into a snake. But Aaron’s walking stick swallowed theirs up.13In spite of that, Pharaoh became stubborn. He wouldn’t listen to them, just as the LORD had said.
The plague of blood
14Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Pharaoh is very stubborn. He refuses to let the people go.15In the morning Pharaoh will go down to the River Nile. Go and meet him on the bank of the river. Take in your hand the walking stick that turned into a snake.16Say to Pharaoh, “The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you. He says, ‘Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me in the desert. But up to now you have not listened.’17The LORD says, ‘Here is how you will know that I am the LORD. I will strike the water of the River Nile with the walking stick that is in my hand. The river will turn into blood.18The fish in the river will die. The river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’ ” ’19The LORD said to Moses, ‘Tell Aaron, “Get your walking stick. Reach your hand out over the waters of Egypt. The streams, canals, ponds and all the lakes will turn into blood. There will be blood everywhere in Egypt. It will even be in the wooden buckets and stone jars.” ’20Moses and Aaron did exactly as the LORD had commanded them. Aaron held out his staff in front of Pharaoh and his officials. He struck the water of the River Nile. And all the water turned into blood.21The fish in the Nile died. The river smelled so bad the Egyptians couldn’t drink its water. There was blood everywhere in Egypt.22But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by doing their magic tricks. So Pharaoh became stubborn. He wouldn’t listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.23Even that miracle didn’t change Pharaoh’s mind. In fact, he turned round and went into his palace.24All the Egyptians dug holes near the River Nile to get drinking water. They couldn’t drink water from the river.

25Seven days passed after the LORD struck the River Nile.
