Das Danklied der Befreiten

1 Damals sangen Mose und die Israeliten ein Lied zur Ehre Jahwes: Jahwe will ich singen, / denn hoch ist er und unerreicht. / Ross und Reiter warf er ins Meer. 2 Jah* ist meine Stärke und mein Lied, / denn er ist mein Retter geworden. / Er ist mein Gott, / ihn will ich preisen. / Er war schon der Gott meines Vaters, / er, den ich lobe. 3 Jahwe ist ein Kämpfer, / Jahwe ist sein Name! 4 Pharaos Wagen und seine ganze Macht, / die warf er ins Meer. / Die Elite seiner Wagenkämpfer / ist im Schilfmeer versunken. 5 Die Fluten haben sie bedeckt. / Sie fuhren in die Tiefe wie ein Stein. 6 Jahwe, deine Rechte ist mit Kraft geschmückt, / deine Hand zerschmettert den Feind! 7 In deiner unerreichten Majestät / wirfst du die Rebellen zu Boden. / Du schickst deinen glühenden Zorn; / er frisst sie wie Feuer das Stroh. 8 Du schnaubtest vor Zorn, / da türmten sich die Wasser, / da standen die Wogen als Wall. / Die Fluten erstarrten mitten im Meer. 9 Es prahlte der Feind: „Ich will sie jagen, ich hole sie ein, / verteile die Beute, stille die Gier! / Ich zücke mein Schwert und lösche sie aus!“ 10 Doch als dein Atem blies, verschlang sie das Meer. / Sie versanken wie Blei in den mächtigen Wogen. 11 Wer von allen Göttern ist dir gleich, Jahwe? / Wer ist so herrlich und heilig wie du, / der Furcht erregt und Lobgesänge weckt, / der Wunderbares tut? 12 Du strecktest die Hand aus, / und schon verschlang sie die Erde. 13 Du lenkst mit Liebe das gerettete Volk, / führst es in Kraft zu deiner heiligen Wohnung. 14 Als die Völker das hörten, erzitterten sie; / ein Schütteln packte die Philister. 15 Da erschraken die Anführer Edoms, / die Mächtigen Moabs begannen zu zittern, / Kanaans Bewohner verloren den Mut. 16 Furcht und Schrecken packte sie. / Vor deinem mächtigen Arm / wurden sie starr wie Stein, / bis dein Volk hindurchzog, Jahwe, / bis hindurchzog das Volk, das dir gehört. 17 Du bringst sie hin, du pflanzt sie ein / auf dem Berg, der dir gehört, / am Ort, wo du wohnst, Jahwe, / beim Heiligtum, das du errichtet hast. 18 Jahwe ist König für immer und ewig! 19 Denn als die Pferde und Streitwagen des Pharao mit den Reitern durchs Meer zogen, hatte Jahwe das Wasser über sie zurückfluten lassen. Die Israeliten aber waren auf dem Trockenen mitten durchs Meer gegangen.

Das Lied der Mirjam

20 Dann nahm die Prophetin Mirjam, Aarons Schwester, ihr Tamburin zur Hand. Alle Frauen schlossen sich ihr an. Sie schlugen ihre Handpauken und zogen im Reigentanz hinter ihr her. 21 Mirjam sang ihnen zu: Singt Jahwe, denn hoch ist er und unerreicht! / Pferd und Reiter warf er ins Meer.

Das Wasser von Mara und von Elim

22 Mose ließ Israel vom Schilfmeer aufbrechen. Sie zogen los und kamen in die Wüste Schur.* Drei Tage waren sie in der Wüste unterwegs und fanden kein Wasser. 23 Dann kamen sie nach Mara.* Dort gab es Wasser, aber man konnte es nicht trinken, weil es bitter war. Deshalb hatte der Ort auch den Namen Mara, Bitterwasser. 24 Da stellte sich das Volk gegen Mose und murrte: „Was sollen wir nun trinken?“ 25 Mose schrie zu Jahwe, und Jahwe zeigte ihm ein Stück Holz. Das warf Mose ins Wasser. Da wurde es zu Süßwasser. Dort stellte Gott sein Volk auf die Probe und richtete es auf Recht und Ordnung aus. 26 Er sagte: „Wenn du auf Jahwe, deinen Gott, hörst und tust, was ihm gefällt, wenn du seinen Geboten folgst und dich an seine Vorschriften hältst, dann werde ich dir keine von den Krankheiten schicken, die ich den Ägyptern auferlegt habe. Denn ich bin Jahwe, dein Arzt.“ 27 Dann kamen sie nach Elim.* Dort am Wasser schlugen sie ihr Lager auf. In Elim gab es nämlich zwölf Quellen und siebzig Palmen.

The song of Moses and Miriam

1 Here is the song that Moses and the people of Israel sang to the LORD. They said, ‘I will sing to the LORD. He is greatly honoured. He has thrown Pharaoh’s horses and chariot drivers into the Red Sea. 2 The LORD gives me strength and protects me. He has saved me. He is my God, I will praise him. He is my father’s God, and I will honour him. 3 The LORD goes into battle. The LORD is his name. 4 He has thrown Pharaoh’s chariots and army into the Red Sea. Pharaoh’s best officers drowned in the sea. 5 The deep waters covered them. They sank to the bottom like a stone. 6 ‘LORD, your right hand was majestic and powerful. LORD, your right hand destroyed your enemies. 7 Because of your great majesty, you threw down those who opposed you. Your burning anger blazed out. It burned them up like straw. 8 The powerful blast from your nose piled up the waters. The rushing waters stood firm like a wall. The deep waters stood up in the middle of the sea. 9 ‘Your enemies boasted, “We will chase Israel and will catch them. We’ll divide up what we take from them. We’ll eat them alive. We’ll pull our swords out. Our powerful hands will destroy them.” 10 But you blew with your breath. The Red Sea covered your enemies. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 ‘LORD, who among the gods is like you? Who is like you? You are majestic and holy. Your glory fills me with wonder. You do amazing things. 12 You reach out your right hand. The earth swallows up your enemies. 13 ‘Because your love is faithful, you will lead the people you have set free. Because you are so strong, you will guide them to the holy place where you live. 14 The nations will hear about it and tremble. Pain and suffering will take hold of the Philistines. 15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified. The leaders of Moab will tremble with fear. The people of Canaan will melt away. 16 Fear and terror will fall on them. Your powerful arm will make them as still as a stone. Then your people will pass by, LORD. Then the people you created will pass by. 17 You will bring them in. You will plant them on the mountain you gave them. LORD, you have made that place your home. Lord, your hands have made your holy place secure. 18 ‘The LORD rules for ever and ever.’ 19 Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the Red Sea. The LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the people of Israel walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Aaron’s sister Miriam was a prophet. She took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her. They played tambourines and danced. 21 Miriam sang to them, ‘Sing to the LORD. He is greatly honoured. He has thrown Pharaoh’s horses and chariot drivers into the Red Sea.’

The waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea. They went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they travelled in the desert. They didn’t find any water there. 23 When they came to Marah, they couldn’t drink its water. It was bitter. That’s why the place is named Marah. 24 The people told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, ‘What are we supposed to drink?’ 25 Then Moses cried out to the LORD. The LORD showed him a stick. Moses threw it into the water. The water became fit to drink. There the LORD gave a ruling and instruction for the people. And there he tested them. 26 He said, ‘I am the LORD your God. Listen carefully to me. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands. Obey all my rules. If you do, I will not send on you any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians. I am the LORD who heals you.’ 27 The people came to Elim. It had 12 springs and 70 palm trees. They camped there near the water.
