Abrahams Opfergang

1 Einige Zeit danach* stellte Gott Abraham auf die Probe. „Abraham“, sagte er zu ihm. „Ja, hier bin ich“, antwortete er. 2 „Nimm deinen Sohn, deinen einzigen, den du lieb hast, den Isaak! Zieh ins Land Morija und opfere ihn als Brandopfer auf dem Berg, den ich dir zeigen werde!“* 3 Am nächsten Morgen stand Abraham früh auf. Er spaltete Holz für das Brandopfer und sattelte seinen Esel. Dann nahm er zwei seiner Leute und seinen Sohn Isaak und machte sich mit ihnen auf den Weg zu dem Ort, den Gott ihm genannt hatte. 4 Am dritten Tag erblickte er den Berg aus der Ferne. 5 Da sagte er zu seinen Leuten: „Ihr bleibt mit dem Esel hier! Ich werde mit dem Jungen dort hinaufgehen, um anzubeten. Dann kommen wir wieder zurück.“ 6 Abraham lud seinem Sohn die Holzscheite auf den Rücken. Er selbst nahm den Topf mit den glühenden Kohlen und das Messer. So gingen beide miteinander. 7 Da sagte Isaak: „Vater!“ – „Ja, mein Sohn?“ – „Schau, wir haben Feuer und Holz. Aber wo ist das Lamm zum Brandopfer?“ 8 „Gott wird schon für ein Lamm sorgen, mein Sohn.“ So gingen beide miteinander. 9 Als sie die Stelle erreichten, die Gott ihm genannt hatte, baute Abraham den Altar. Dann schichtete er das Holz auf, fesselte seinen Sohn Isaak und legte ihn auf den Altar, oben auf das Holz. 10 Und dann griff er nach dem Messer, um seinen Sohn zu schlachten. 11 Da rief der Engel Jahwes vom Himmel her: „Abraham! Abraham!“ – „Ja?“, erwiderte er. 12 „Halt ein! Tu dem Jungen nichts zuleide! Jetzt weiß ich, dass du Gott gehorchst, denn du hast mir deinen einzigen Sohn nicht verweigert.“ 13 Als Abraham dann aufblickte, sah er einen Schafbock, der sich mit seinen Hörnern im Gebüsch hinter ihm verfangen hatte. Er holte das Tier und opferte es anstelle seines Sohnes auf dem Altar. 14 Und den Ort nannte er „Jahwe sorgt vor“. Noch heute sagt man: „Auf dem Berg Jahwes ist vorgesorgt.“ 15 Noch einmal rief der Engel Jahwes Abraham vom Himmel herab zu: 16 „Ich schwöre bei mir selbst, sagt Jahwe: Weil du das getan und mir deinen einzigen Sohn nicht verweigert hast, 17 werde ich dich mit Segen überschütten und deine Nachkommen überaus zahlreich machen,* so wie die Sterne am Himmel und die Sandkörner* am Strand. Sie werden ihre Feinde besiegen und ihre Städte erobern. 18 Und durch deinen Nachkommen* werden alle Völker der Erde gesegnet sein, weil du mir gehorcht hast.“ 19 Abraham kehrte wieder zu seinen Leuten zurück, und sie gingen miteinander nach Beerscheba. Dort blieb Abraham wohnen.

Die Nachkommen Nahors

20 Einige Zeit später erhielt Abraham die Nachricht: „Milka hat deinem Bruder Nahor Söhne geboren!“ 21 Es waren Uz, sein Erstgeborener, dann Bus und Kemuël, von dem die Syrer abstammen, 22 Kesed und Haso, Pildasch, Jidlaf und Betuël, der Vater von Rebekka. 23 Diese acht Söhne hatte Milka Nahor, dem Bruder Abrahams, geboren. 24 Auch von seiner Nebenfrau Rëuma hatte Nahor Kinder: Tebach, Gaham, Tahasch und Maacha.

God tests Abraham

1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ Abraham replied. 2 Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son. He is the one you love. Take Isaac. Go to the place called Moriah. Give your son to me there as a burnt offering. Sacrifice him on the mountain I will show you.’ 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. He cut enough wood for the burnt offering. Then he started out for the place God had shown him. 4 On the third day Abraham saw the place a long way off. 5 He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship. Then we’ll come back to you.’ 6 Abraham had his son Isaac carry the wood for the burnt offering. He himself carried the fire and the knife. And the two of them walked on together. 7 Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said. ‘But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ 8 Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ And the two of them walked on together. 9 They reached the place God had shown Abraham. There Abraham built an altar. He arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac. Abraham placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand. He picked up the knife to kill his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven. He said, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ Abraham replied. 12 ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not harm him. Now I know that you would do anything for God. You have not held back from me your son, your only son.’ 13 Abraham looked round. There in a bush he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram. He sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide. To this day people say, ‘It will be provided on the mountain of the LORD.’ 15 The angel of the LORD called out to Abraham from heaven a second time. 16 He said, ‘I am giving you my word that I will bless you. I will bless you because of what you have done,’ announces the LORD. ‘You have not held back your son, your only son. 17 So I will certainly bless you. I will make the children born into your family as many as the stars in the sky. I will make them as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. They will take over the cities of their enemies. 18 All nations on earth will be blessed because of your children. All these things will happen because you have obeyed me.’ 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants. They started out together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Nahor’s sons

20 Some time later Abraham was told, ‘Milkah has become a mother. She has had sons by your brother Nahor. 21 Uz was born first. Then came his brother Buz. Kemuel was born next. He became the father of Aram. 22 Milkah’s other sons are Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.’ 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah had the eight sons by Abraham’s brother Nahor. 24 Nahor had a concubine named Reumah. She also had sons. They were Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
