1Wer glaubt, dass Jesus der Christus ist, der Messias, der wurde aus Gott geboren. Und jeder, der Gott als seinen Vater liebt, liebt auch dessen andere Kinder.2Dass wir die Kinder Gottes lieben, erkennen wir daran, dass wir Gott lieben und seine Gebote halten.3Unsere Liebe zu Gott zeigt sich im Befolgen seiner Gebote, und das ist nicht schwer.4Denn jeder, der aus Gott geboren ist, überwindet die ‹gottferne› Welt. Und das ist die Siegesmacht, die diese Welt überwindet: unser Glaube.5Wer sonst kann es sein, der diese ‹gottferne› Welt überwindet, wenn nicht der, der glaubt, dass Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist?
Drei Zeugen
6Und das ist der, der durch das Wasser ‹seiner Taufe› und das Blut ‹seines Kreuzes›* gekommen ist: Jesus Christus. ‹Gott bestätigte das› nicht nur im Wasser, sondern im Wasser und im Blut.* Auch der Geist bestätigt uns das, denn der Geist Gottes ist die Wahrheit.7Wir haben also drei Zeugen –8den Geist, das Wasser und das Blut –, und alle drei stimmen überein.9Wenn wir schon menschlichen Zeugen Glauben schenken, wie viel mehr dann dem Zeugnis Gottes. Gottes Aussage hat ungleich größeres Gewicht, zumal er damit für seinen Sohn eingetreten ist.10Wer an den Sohn Gottes glaubt, weiß in seinem Inneren, dass wahr ist, was Gott sagt. Wer das nicht glaubt, macht Gott zum Lügner, weil er nicht wahrhaben will, was Gott über seinen Sohn ausgesagt hat.11Und was bedeutet das für uns? Es besagt: Gott hat uns ewiges Leben geschenkt, das Leben, das in seinem Sohn ist.12Wer also mit dem Sohn Gottes verbunden ist, hat das Leben; wer nicht, hat es nicht.13Ich habe euch das alles geschrieben, damit ihr wisst, dass ihr das ewige Leben habt, denn ihr glaubt ja an Jesus, den Sohn Gottes.
Zuversichtlich beten
14Deshalb können wir auch voller Zuversicht sein, dass Gott uns hört, wenn wir ihn um etwas bitten, das seinem Willen entspricht.15Und wenn wir wissen, dass er uns bei allem hört, was wir erbitten, können wir auch sicher sein, dass er uns das Erbetene gibt – so, als hätten wir es schon erhalten.16Wenn jemand sieht, dass sein Bruder eine Sünde begeht, eine, die nicht zum Tod führt, dann soll er bitten, und Gott wird ihm das Leben geben. Das betrifft aber nur solche, deren Sünde nicht zum Tod führt. Denn es gibt auch Sünde, die den Tod nach sich zieht.* Die habe ich nicht gemeint, wenn ich sagte, dass ihr beten sollt.17Zwar ist jedes Unrecht Sünde, aber nicht jede Sünde führt zum Tod.
Dreifache Gewissheit
18Wir wissen, dass jemand, der ein Kind Gottes geworden ist, nicht ‹bedenkenlos weiter›* sündigt, denn wer aus Gott geboren wurde, bleibt bewahrt, und der Böse tastet ihn nicht an.19Wir wissen, dass wir von Gott stammen und dass die ganze Welt um uns herum vom Bösen beherrscht ist.20Und wir wissen, dass der Sohn Gottes gekommen ist und uns fähig gemacht hat, den wahren Gott zu erkennen. Mit ihm, dem Wahrhaftigen, sind wir in seinem Sohn Jesus Christus verbunden, der selbst der wahre Gott und das ewige Leben ist.21Kinder, hütet euch vor den falschen Göttern!

1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children as well.2Here is how we know that we love God’s children. And his commands are not hard to obey.4That’s because everyone who is a child of God has won the battle over the world. Our faith has won the battle for us.5Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.6Jesus Christ was born as we are, and he died on the cross. He wasn’t just born as we are. He also died on the cross. The Holy Spirit is a truthful witness about him. That’s because the Spirit is the truth.7There are three that are witnesses about Jesus.8They are the Holy Spirit, the birth of Jesus, and the death of Jesus. And the three of them agree.9We accept what people say when they are witnesses. But it’s more important when God is a witness. That’s because it is what God says about his Son.10Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts what God says about him. Whoever does not believe God is calling him a liar. That’s because they have not believed what God said about his Son.11Here is what God says about the Son. God has given us eternal life. And this life is found in his Son.12Whoever belongs to the Son has life. Whoever doesn’t belong to the Son of God doesn’t have life.

13I’m writing these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God. I’m writing so you will know that you have eternal life.14Here is what we can be sure of when we come to God in prayer. If we ask anything in keeping with what he wants, he hears us.15If we know that God hears what we ask for, we know that we have it.16Suppose you see any brother or sister commit a sin. But this sin is not the kind that leads to death. Then you should pray, and God will give them life. I’m talking about someone whose sin does not lead to death. But there is a sin that does lead to death. I’m not saying you should pray about that sin.17Every wrong thing we do is sin. But there are sins that do not lead to death.18We know that those who are children of God do not keep on sinning. The Son of God keeps them safe. The evil one can’t harm them.19We know that we are children of God. We know that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.20We also know that the Son of God has come. He has given us understanding. So we can know the God who is true. And we belong to the true God by belonging to his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.21Dear children, keep away from statues of gods.
