1Aber was für einen Vorteil haben dann die Juden, und was nützt dann noch die Beschneidung?2Nun, die Juden haben den anderen Völkern in jeder Hinsicht viel voraus, vor allem, dass Gott ihnen seine Worte anvertraut hat.3Es stimmt zwar, dass einige dieses Vertrauen enttäuscht haben. Aber kann ihr Unglaube etwa die Treue Gottes aufheben?4Auf keinen Fall! Vielmehr sollte dadurch klar werden, dass Gott zuverlässig und wahrhaftig ist, jeder Mensch aber letztlich ein Lügner, so wie es in der Schrift heißt: „Du sollst Recht behalten mit deinen Worten und wirst dich siegreich behaupten, wenn man dich anklagen will.“5Wenn aber unsere Ungerechtigkeit Gottes Gerechtigkeit überhaupt erst zur Geltung bringt, was sagen wir dann? Ist Gott vielleicht ungerecht, wenn er seinen Zorn über uns kommen lässt? – Ich frage sehr menschlich. –6Auf keinen Fall! Denn wie könnte Gott sonst die Welt richten?7Wenn nun aber die Wahrheit Gottes erst durch meine Lüge richtig zur Geltung kommt und das zu seinem Ruhm führt, warum werde ich dann noch als Sünder gerichtet?8Könnten wir dann nicht gleich sagen: „Tun wir doch das Böse, damit so das Gute kommt!“? Einige verleumden uns ja und behaupten, dass wir so etwas lehren. Solche trifft Gottes Urteil zu Recht.9Aber wie ist es nun? Machen wir etwa Ausflüchte? Ganz und gar nicht! Wir haben ja schon den Beweis erbracht, dass die Juden genauso wie die anderen Völker in der Gewalt der Sünde sind.10So steht es in der Schrift: „Keiner ist gerecht, auch nicht einer.11Keiner hat Einsicht und fragt nach Gott.12Alle haben sie den rechten Weg verlassen und sind unbrauchbar geworden. Niemand ist da, der Gutes tut, kein Einziger.“13„Ihre Kehle ist ein offenes Grab und mit ihrer Zunge formen sie Lügen.“ „Schlangengift verbirgt sich hinter ihren Lippen.“14„Ihr Mund ist voller Flüche und Drohungen.“15„Ihre Füße sind schnell, wenn es darum geht, Blut zu vergießen.16Sie hinterlassen Verwüstung und Elend,17und was zum Frieden führt, kennen sie nicht.“18„Von Gottesfurcht wissen sie nichts.“19Das sagt das Gesetz, und wir wissen: Alles, was es sagt, richtet sich an die, denen es verordnet wurde. So wird jeder Mund gestopft und die ganze Welt sieht sich dem Urteil Gottes verfallen.20Denn durch das Halten von Geboten wird kein Mensch vor Gott gerecht. Das Gesetz führt nur dazu, dass man seine Sünde erkennt.
Gerecht werden durch Glauben
21Doch jetzt ist die Gerechtigkeit Gottes unabhängig vom Gesetz sichtbar geworden. Und das wird vom Gesetz und den Worten der Propheten bestätigt.22Es ist die Gerechtigkeit Gottes, die durch den Glauben an Jesus Christus geschenkt wird und allen zugutekommt, die glauben. Da gibt es keinen Unterschied,23denn alle haben gesündigt und die Herrlichkeit Gottes* verloren.24Doch werden sie ohne eigenes Zutun durch seine Gnade gerecht gesprochen. Das geschieht aufgrund der Erlösung, die in Christus Jesus ‹Wirklichkeit geworden› ist.25Ihn hat Gott als Sühnopfer öffentlich dargestellt. Durch sein vergossenes Blut ist die Sühne vollzogen worden, und durch den Glauben kommt sie uns zugute. So hat Gott auch den Beweis erbracht, dass er gerecht gehandelt hatte, obwohl er die bis dahin begangenen Sünden der Menschen ungestraft ließ.26Und heute beweist er seine Gerechtigkeit dadurch, dass er den für gerecht erklärt, der aus dem Glauben an Jesus lebt.27Kann man da noch selbst auf etwas stolz sein? Das ist ausgeschlossen! Durch was für ein Gesetz? Durch das der Werke? Nein! Es kommt durch das Gesetz des Glaubens.28Denn wir sind zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass ein Mensch durch Glauben für gerecht erklärt wird und nicht durch das Einhalten von Vorschriften.29Ist Gott denn nur ein Gott der Juden und nicht auch der aller anderen Völker? Natürlich auch aller anderen Völker!30Denn es gibt nur den einen Gott. Er wird die Beschnittenen ebenso wie die Unbeschnittenen auf der gleichen Grundlage des Glaubens für gerecht erklären.31Machen wir jetzt durch den Glauben das Gesetz ungültig? Nein, ganz im Gegenteil: Wir bestätigen das Gesetz!

God is faithful
1Is there any advantage in being a Jew? Is there any value in being circumcised?2There is great value in every way! First of all, the Jews have been given the very words of God.3What if some Jews were not faithful? Will the fact that they weren’t faithful keep God from being faithful?4Not at all! God is true, even if every human being is a liar. It is written, ‘You are right when you sentence me. You are fair when you judge me.’5Doesn’t the fact that we are wrong prove more clearly that God is right? Then what can we say? Can we say that God is not fair when he brings his anger down on us? As you can tell, I am just using human ways of thinking.6God is certainly fair! If he weren’t, how could he judge the world?7Someone might argue, ‘When I lie, it becomes clearer that God is truthful. It makes his glory shine more brightly. Why then does he find me guilty of sin?’8Why not say, ‘Let’s do evil things so that good things will happen’? Some people actually lie by reporting that this is what we say. They are the ones who will rightly be found guilty.
No one is right with God
9What should we say then? Do we Jews have any advantage? Not at all! We have already claimed that Jews and Gentiles are sinners. Everyone is under the power of sin.10It is written, ‘No one is right with God, no one at all.11No one understands. No one trusts in God.12All of them have turned away. They have all become worthless. No one does anything good, no one at all.’13‘Their throats are like open graves. With their tongues they tell lies.’ ‘The words from their lips are like the poison of a snake.’14‘Their mouths are full of curses and bitterness.’15‘They run quickly to commit murder.16They leave a trail of harmful actions.17They do not know how to live in peace.’18‘They don’t have any respect for God.’19What the law says, it says to those who are ruled by the law. Its purpose is to shut every mouth and make the whole world accountable to God.20So no one will be considered right with God by obeying the law. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.
Becoming right with God by faith
21But now God has shown us his saving power without the help of the law. But the Law and the Prophets tell us about this.22We are made right with God by putting our faith in Jesus Christ. This happens to all who believe. It is no different for the Jews than for the Gentiles.23Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory.24The free gift of God’s grace makes us right with him. Christ Jesus paid the price to set us free.25God gave Christ as a sacrifice to pay for sins through the spilling of his blood. So God forgives the sins of those who have faith. God did all this to prove that he does what is right. He is a God of mercy. So he did not punish for their sins the people who lived before Jesus lived.26God did all this to prove in our own time that he does what is right. He also makes right with himself those who believe in Jesus.27So who can boast? No one! Are people saved by the law that requires them to obey? Not at all! They are saved because of the law that requires faith.28We firmly believe that a person is made right with God because of their faith. They are not saved by obeying the law.29Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of Gentiles? Yes, he is their God too.30There is only one God. When those who are circumcised believe in him, he makes them right with himself. Suppose those who are not circumcised believe in him. Then God also will make them right with himself.31Does faith make the law useless? Not at all! We agree with the law.
