1 Cuvântul DOMNULUI mi‑a vorbit, zicând: 2 „Fiul omului, rostește o fabulă, spune‑i o pildă Casei lui Israel! 3 Spune‑i: «Așa vorbește Stăpânul DOMN: ‘Un vultur măreț, cu aripi mari, cu pene lungi, cu penaj bogat și divers colorat, a venit în Liban și, prinzând vârful unui cedru, 4 i‑a rupt cea mai de sus rămurea, a dus‑o într‑o țară de negustori și a sădit‑o într‑o cetate de negoț. 5 Apoi a luat sămânță din țară și a semănat‑o într‑un pământ roditor. A pus‑o lângă o apă mare și a sădit‑o ca pe o salcie. 6 Sămânța a încolțit și s‑a făcut o viță întinsă, dar nu prea înaltă. Ramurile îi erau întoarse spre vultur, iar rădăcinile erau sub el. Astfel ea a ajuns o viță care a dat lăstari și a făcut mlădițe. 7 Mai era însă un alt vultur măreț, cu aripi mari și cu penaj bogat. Și iată că vița aceasta și‑a îndreptat cu lăcomie rădăcinile spre el și și‑a întins mlădițele spre el ca să i se dea mai multă apă decât pe solul plantației pe care se afla. 8 Ea fusese sădită pe un teren bun și lângă ape multe, ca să facă ramuri, să dea rod și să devină o viță minunată.’ 9 Prin urmare, spune‑le că așa vorbește Stăpânul DOMN: ‘Oare‑i va merge bine? Oare nu‑i vor fi smulse rădăcinile și nu‑i vor fi tăiate roadele?! I se vor veșteji toate frunzele, i se va usca butucul și nu va fi nevoie nici de braț puternic, nici de oameni mulți pentru ca rădăcinile să‑i fie îndepărtate! 10 Iată că este sădită! Îi va merge bine oare? Când vântul de răsărit va sufla împotriva ei, oare nu se va usca ea de tot? Oare nu se va usca chiar pe terasa unde a încolțit?’»“ 11 Cuvântul DOMNULUI mi‑a vorbit, zicând: 12 „Întreabă această Casă răzvrătită: «Nu știți ce înseamnă aceste lucruri?» Apoi spune‑le: «Iată, împăratul Babilonului a venit la Ierusalim, i‑a luat regele și prinții și i‑a dus cu el în Babilon. 13 Apoi a luat un urmaș la împărăție și a încheiat cu el un legământ, punându‑l sub jurământ. Totodată i‑a luat și pe nobilii țării, 14 ca să slăbească regatul, așa încât să nu se mai ridice, ci să păzească legământul, rămânându‑i loial. 15 Dar regele s‑a răsculat împotriva lui și a trimis un mesager în Egipt, ca să‑i dea cai și un mare număr de oameni. Va reuși el oare? Cel ce a făcut aceste lucruri va scăpa el oare? Să rupă el legământul și să scape? 16 Viu sunt Eu, zice Stăpânul DOMN, că regele va muri în Babilon, acolo unde locuiește împăratul care l‑a făcut rege, al cărui jurământ l‑a disprețuit și al cărui legământ l‑a rupt. 17 Faraon, cu armata sa cea mare și cu mulțimea sa cea numeroasă, nu‑l va ajuta în război, când se vor înălța rampe de asalt și se vor zidi întărituri pentru nimicirea multor vieți. 18 Pentru că a disprețuit jurământul, rupând legământul, pentru că, deși a încheiat un legământ, a făcut totuși toate aceste lucruri, nu va scăpa! 19 De aceea, viu sunt Eu, zice Stăpânul DOMN, că voi întoarce împotriva lui jurământul Meu pe care l‑a disprețuit și legământul Meu pe care l‑a rupt. 20 Îmi voi arunca asupra lui plasa și va fi prins în lațul Meu; îl voi duce în Babilon și îl voi judeca acolo pentru necredincioșia arătată față de Mine. 21 Toți fugarii din trupele lui vor cădea uciși de sabie, iar pe cei ce vor rămâne îi voi împrăștia în toate vânturile. Și veți ști astfel că Eu, DOMNUL, am vorbit.» 22 Așa vorbește Stăpânul DOMN: «Eu Însumi voi rupe o rămurea din vârful măreț al unui cedru și o voi sădi. Din vârful ramurilor lui voi rupe o mlădiță firavă pe care Eu Însumi o voi planta pe un munte înalt și măreț. 23 O voi planta pe un munte înalt al lui Israel. Acesteia îi vor crește ramuri, va da roade și va deveni un cedru maiestuos. Păsări de tot felul se vor așeza în el și la umbra ramurilor lui vor locui tot felul de înaripate. 24 Și toți copacii câmpiei vor ști că Eu, DOMNUL, pot să smeresc un copac înalt și pot să înalț un copac neînsemnat, pot să usuc un copac plin de viață și pot face să înflorească un copac uscat.» Eu, DOMNUL, am vorbit și așa voi face.“

1 A message from the LORD came to me. The LORD said, 2 ‘Son of man, tell the people of Israel a story about their kings. Let them know what will happen to them. 3 Tell them, “The LORD and King says, ‘A great eagle came to the city of “Lebanon”. It had powerful wings and a lot of long feathers. The feathers were colourful and beautiful. The eagle landed in the top of a cedar tree. 4 It broke off the highest twig. The eagle carried it away to the land of Babylon. There are many traders in that land. The eagle planted the twig in the city of Babylon. 5 ‘ “ ‘Then it took from the land a seed that had just sprouted. It put it in rich soil near plenty of water. It planted the seed like a willow tree. 6 The seed grew into a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned towards the eagle. And its roots remained under the eagle. So the seed became a vine. It produced branches and put out leaves. 7 ‘ “ ‘But there was another great eagle. It also had powerful wings and a lot of feathers. The vine now sent out its roots towards that eagle. It sent them out from the place where it was planted. And it reached out its branches to the eagle for water. 8 The seed had been planted in good soil near plenty of water. Then it could produce branches and bear fruit. It could become a beautiful vine.’ ” 9 ‘Ezekiel, tell the Israelites, “The LORD and King asks, ‘Will the vine grow? Won’t it be pulled up by its roots? Won’t all its fruit be stripped off? Won’t it dry up? All its new growth will dry up. It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up. 10 It has been planted, but will it grow? No. It will dry up completely when the east wind strikes it. It will dry up in the place where it grew.’ ” ’ 11 A message from the LORD came to me. The LORD said, 12 ‘These people refuse to obey me. Ask them, “Don’t you know what these things mean?” Tell them, “Nebuchadnezzar went to Jerusalem. He was the king of Babylon. He carried off King Jehoiachin and the nobles. He brought them back with him to the city of Babylon. 13 Then Nebuchadnezzar made a peace treaty with Zedekiah. He was a member of Jerusalem’s royal family. Nebuchadnezzar made him promise he would keep the treaty. He also took away the leading men of the land as prisoners. 14 He did it to bring down their kingdom. It would not rise again. In fact, it would be able to last only by keeping his treaty. 15 But Zedekiah turned against him. He sent messengers to Egypt. They went there to get horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he who does things like that escape? Can he break the peace treaty and still escape? 16 ‘ “Zedekiah will die in Babylon,” announces the LORD and King. “And that is just as sure as I am alive. He will die in the land of King Nebuchadnezzar, who put him on the throne. Zedekiah didn’t keep his promise to Nebuchadnezzar and broke his treaty. 17 So Nebuchadnezzar will build ramps against the walls of Jerusalem. He will set up war machines to destroy many lives. Pharaoh will not be able to help Zedekiah during the war. The huge and mighty army of Egypt will not be of any help. 18 Zedekiah didn’t keep his promise to Nebuchadnezzar and broke his treaty. Zedekiah had made a firm promise to keep it. But he broke it anyway. So he will not escape. 19 ‘ “The LORD and King says, ‘Zedekiah didn’t keep the promise he made in my name. He broke the treaty. So I will pay him back. And that is just as sure as I am alive. 20 I will spread out my net to catch him. He will be caught in my trap. I will bring him to Babylon. I will judge him there because he was not faithful to me. 21 All Zedekiah’s best troops will be killed by swords. Those who are left alive will be scattered to the winds. Then you will know that I have spoken. I am the LORD.’ 22 ‘ “The LORD and King says, ‘I myself will get a twig from the very top of a cedar tree and plant it. I will break off the highest twig. I will plant it on a very high mountain. 23 I will plant it on the high mountains of Israel. It will produce branches and bear fruit. It will become a beautiful cedar tree. All kinds of birds will make their nests in it. They will live in the shade of its branches. 24 All the trees in the forest will know that I bring down tall trees. I make short trees grow tall. I dry up green trees. And I make dry trees green.’ ‘ “I have spoken. I will do this. I am the LORD.” ’
