1 Chi ha creduto a quello che abbiamo annunciato? A chi è stato rivelato il braccio del Signore? 2 Egli è cresciuto davanti a lui come una pianticella, come una radice che esce da un arido suolo; non aveva forma né bellezza da attirare i nostri sguardi, né aspetto tale da piacerci. 3 Disprezzato e abbandonato dagli uomini, uomo di dolore, familiare con la sofferenza, pari a colui davanti al quale ciascuno si nasconde la faccia, era spregiato, e noi non ne facemmo stima alcuna. 4 Tuttavia erano le nostre malattie che egli portava, erano i nostri dolori quelli di cui si era caricato*; ma noi lo ritenevamo colpito, percosso da Dio e umiliato! 5 Egli è stato trafitto a causa delle nostre trasgressioni, stroncato a causa delle nostre iniquità; il castigo, per cui abbiamo pace, è caduto su di lui e mediante le sue lividure noi siamo stati guariti. 6 Noi tutti eravamo smarriti come pecore, ognuno di noi seguiva la propria via; ma il Signore ha fatto ricadere su di lui l’iniquità di noi tutti. 7 Maltrattato, si lasciò umiliare e non aprì la bocca. Come l’agnello condotto al mattatoio, come la pecora muta davanti a chi la tosa, egli non aprì la bocca. 8 Dopo l’arresto e la condanna fu tolto di mezzo; e tra quelli della sua generazione chi rifletté che egli era strappato dalla terra dei viventi e colpito a causa dei peccati del mio popolo? 9 Gli avevano assegnato la sepoltura fra gli empi, ma nella sua morte egli è stato con il ricco, perché non aveva commesso violenze né c’era stato inganno nella sua bocca. 10 Ma il Signore ha voluto stroncarlo con i patimenti. Dopo aver dato la sua vita in sacrificio per il peccato, egli vedrà una discendenza, prolungherà i suoi giorni, e l’opera del Signore prospererà nelle sue mani. 11 Dopo il tormento dell’anima sua vedrà la luce e sarà soddisfatto; per la sua conoscenza, il mio servo, il giusto, renderà giusti i molti, si caricherà egli stesso delle loro iniquità. 12 Perciò io gli darò in premio le moltitudini, egli dividerà il bottino con i molti, perché ha dato se stesso alla morte ed è stato contato fra i malfattori*; perché egli ha portato i peccati di molti e ha interceduto per i colpevoli.

1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?* And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected* by men, a man of sorrows* and acquainted with* grief;* and as one from whom men hide their faces* he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although* he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief;* when his soul makes* an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see* and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,* and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,* because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
