Abiia, re di Giuda; guerra contro Geroboamo, re d’Israele

1 Il diciottesimo anno del regno di Geroboamo, Abiia cominciò a regnare sopra Giuda. 2 Regnò tre anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Micaia, figlia di Uriel, da Ghibea. E ci fu guerra tra Abiia e Geroboamo. 3 Abiia entrò in guerra con un esercito di prodi guerrieri, quattrocentomila uomini scelti; e Geroboamo si dispose in ordine di battaglia contro di lui con ottocentomila uomini scelti, tutti forti e valorosi. 4 Abiia si mosse dall’alto del monte Semaraim, che è nella regione montuosa di Efraim, e disse: «Geroboamo e tutto Israele, ascoltatemi! 5 Non dovreste voi sapere che il Signore, Dio d’Israele, ha dato per sempre il regno sopra Israele a Davide, a Davide e ai suoi figli, con un patto inviolabile? 6 Eppure Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, servo di Salomone, figlio di Davide, è insorto ribellandosi contro il suo signore; 7 e della gente da nulla, degli uomini perversi, si sono raccolti attorno a lui e si sono fatti forti contro Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, quando Roboamo era giovane e timido di cuore e non poteva mostrare fermezza di fronte a loro. 8 E ora voi credete di poter resistere al regno del Signore, che è nelle mani dei figli di Davide; e siete una gran moltitudine e avete con voi i vitelli d’oro che Geroboamo vi ha fatti per vostri dèi. 9 Non avete forse cacciato via i sacerdoti del Signore, i figli di Aaronne e i Leviti? Non vi siete forse fatti dei sacerdoti come i popoli degli altri paesi? Chiunque è venuto con un toro e con sette montoni per essere consacrato è diventato sacerdote di quelli che non sono dèi. 10 Quanto a noi, il Signore è nostro Dio, e non lo abbiamo abbandonato; i sacerdoti al servizio del Signore sono figli di Aaronne, e i Leviti sono quelli che celebrano le funzioni. 11 Ogni mattina e ogni sera essi bruciano in onore del Signore gli olocausti e il profumo fragrante, mettono in ordine i pani della presentazione sulla tavola pura, e ogni sera accendono il candelabro d’oro con le sue lampade; noi infatti osserviamo i comandamenti del Signore, del nostro Dio; ma voi lo avete abbandonato. 12 Ed ecco, abbiamo con noi, alla nostra testa, Dio e i suoi sacerdoti e le trombe squillanti, per suonare la carica contro di voi. Figli d’Israele, non combattete contro il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, perché non vincerete!» 13 Intanto Geroboamo li prese alle spalle mediante un’imboscata; in modo che le truppe di Geroboamo stavano in faccia a Giuda, a cui si tendeva dietro l’imboscata. 14 Gli uomini di Giuda si voltarono indietro, ed eccoli costretti a combattere davanti e di dietro. Allora gridarono al Signore e i sacerdoti fecero squillare le trombe. 15 La gente di Giuda mandò un grido; e avvenne che, al grido della gente di Giuda, Dio sconfisse Geroboamo e tutto Israele davanti ad Abiia e a Giuda. 16 I figli d’Israele fuggirono davanti a Giuda, e Dio li diede nelle loro mani. 17 Abiia e il suo popolo ne fecero una grande strage; dalla parte d’Israele caddero morti cinquecentomila uomini scelti. 18 Così i figli d’Israele, in quel tempo, furono umiliati, e i figli di Giuda ripresero vigore, perché si erano appoggiati sul Signore, Dio dei loro padri. 19 Abiia inseguì Geroboamo e gli prese delle città: Betel e i villaggi che ne dipendevano, Iesana e i villaggi che ne dipendevano, Efraim e i villaggi che ne dipendevano. 20 Geroboamo, al tempo di Abiia, non ebbe più forza; e, colpito dal Signore, egli morì. 21 Ma Abiia divenne potente, prese quattordici mogli e generò ventidue figli e sedici figlie. 22 Le altre azioni di Abiia, la sua condotta e le sue parole, si trovano scritte nelle memorie del profeta Iddo. 23 Poi Abiia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella città di Davide. Asa, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto. Al suo tempo il paese ebbe pace per dieci anni.

Abijah Reigns in Judah

1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah* the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3 Abijah went out to battle, having an army of valiant men of war, 400,000 chosen men. And Jeroboam drew up his line of battle against him with 800,000 chosen mighty warriors. 4 Then Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim that is in the hill country of Ephraim and said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel! 5 Ought you not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt? 6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord, 7 and certain worthless scoundrels* gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and irresolute* and could not withstand them. 8 “And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods. 9 Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes for ordination* with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are not gods. 10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the Lord who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. 11 They offer to the Lord every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out the showbread on the table of pure gold, and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may burn every evening. For we keep the charge of the Lord our God, but you have forsaken him. 12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.” 13 Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops* were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. 14 And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was in front of and behind them. And they cried to the Lord, and the priests blew the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. 17 Abijah and his people struck them with great force, so there fell slain of Israel 500,000 chosen men. 18 Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the Lord, the God of their fathers. 19 And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jeshanah with its villages and Ephron* with its villages. 20 Jeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abijah. And the Lord struck him down, and he died. 21 But Abijah grew mighty. And he took fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.
