David and Ziba

1 When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba, the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him. He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine. 2 The king asked Ziba, ‘Why have you brought these?’ Ziba answered, ‘The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on, the bread and fruit are for the men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.’ 3 The king then asked, ‘Where is your master’s grandson?’ Ziba said to him, ‘He is staying in Jerusalem, because he thinks, “Today the Israelites will restore to me my grandfather’s kingdom.” ’ 4 Then the king said to Ziba, ‘All that belonged to Mephibosheth is now yours.’ ‘I humbly bow,’ Ziba said. ‘May I find favour in your eyes, my lord the king.’

Shimei curses David

5 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out. 6 He pelted David and all the king’s officials with stones, though all the troops and the special guard were on David’s right and left. 7 As he cursed, Shimei said, ‘Get out, get out, you murderer, you scoundrel! 8 The Lord has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The Lord has given the kingdom into the hands of your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!’ 9 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, ‘Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.’ 10 But the king said, ‘What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, “Curse David,” who can ask, “Why do you do this?” ’ 11 David then said to Abishai and all his officials, ‘My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjaminite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. 12 It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing instead of his curse today.’ 13 So David and his men continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside opposite him, cursing as he went and throwing stones at him and showering him with dirt. 14 The king and all the people with him arrived at their destination exhausted. And there he refreshed himself.

The advice of Ahithophel and Hushai

15 Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him. 16 Then Hushai the Arkite, David’s confidant, went to Absalom and said to him, ‘Long live the king! Long live the king!’ 17 Absalom said to Hushai, ‘So this is the love you show your friend? If he’s your friend, why didn’t you go with him?’ 18 Hushai said to Absalom, ‘No, the one chosen by the Lord, by these people, and by all the men of Israel – his I will be, and I will remain with him. 19 Furthermore, whom should I serve? Should I not serve the son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you.’ 20 Absalom said to Ahithophel, ‘Give us your advice. What should we do?’ 21 Ahithophel answered, ‘Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.’ 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23 Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who enquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.

Siba tradisce Mefiboset

1 Davide aveva superato di poco la cima del monte, quando Siba, servo di Mefiboset, gli venne incontro con un paio di asini sellati e carichi di duecento pani, cento grappoli d’uva passa, un centinaio di frutti di stagione e un otre di vino. 2 Il re disse a Siba: «Che vuoi fare con queste cose?» Siba rispose: «Gli asini serviranno da cavalcatura per la famiglia del re, il pane e i frutti di stagione sono per nutrire i giovani, il vino per dissetare quelli che saranno stanchi nel deserto». 3 Il re disse: «Dov’è il figlio del tuo signore?» Siba rispose al re: «È rimasto a Gerusalemme, perché ha detto: “Oggi la casa d’Israele mi renderà il regno di mio padre”». 4 Il re disse a Siba: «Tutto quello che appartiene a Mefiboset è tuo». Siba replicò: «Io mi prostro davanti a te! Possa io trovare grazia agli occhi tuoi, o re, mio signore!»

Davide maledetto da Simei

5 Quando il re Davide fu giunto a Baurim, uscì di là un uomo, imparentato con la famiglia di Saul, di nome Simei, figlio di Ghera. Egli veniva avanti pronunciando maledizioni 6 e gettando sassi contro Davide e contro tutti i servitori del re Davide, mentre tutto il popolo e tutti gli uomini valorosi stavano alla destra e alla sinistra del re. 7 Simei malediceva Davide, dicendo: «Vattene, vattene, uomo sanguinario, scellerato! 8 Il Signore fa ricadere sul tuo capo tutto il sangue della casa di Saul, al posto del quale tu hai regnato; il Signore ha dato il regno nelle mani di Absalom, tuo figlio; e ora hai le sciagure che ti sei meritato, perché sei un uomo sanguinario». 9 Allora Abisai, figlio di Seruia, disse al re: «Perché questo cane morto osa maledire il re mio signore? Ti prego, lasciami andare a mozzargli la testa!» 10 Ma il re rispose: «Che ho da fare con voi, figli di Seruia? Se egli maledice, è perché il Signore gli ha detto: “Maledici Davide!” Chi oserà dire: “Perché fai così?”». 11 Poi Davide disse ad Abisai e a tutti i suoi servitori: «Ecco, mio figlio, uscito dalle mie viscere, cerca di togliermi la vita! Quanto più lo può fare ora questo Beniaminita! Lasciate che egli maledica, perché gliel’ha ordinato il Signore. 12 Forse il Signore avrà riguardo alla mia afflizione e mi farà del bene in cambio delle maledizioni di oggi». 13 Davide e la sua gente continuarono il loro cammino; Simei camminava sul fianco del monte, di fronte a Davide, e cammin facendo lo malediva, gli gettava dei sassi e buttava della polvere. 14 Il re e tutta la gente che era con lui arrivarono ad Aiefim e là ripresero fiato.

Absalom a Gerusalemme

15 Intanto Absalom e tutto il popolo, gli uomini d’Israele, erano entrati a Gerusalemme; Aitofel era con lui. 16 Quando Cusai, l’Archita, l’amico di Davide, fu giunto presso Absalom, gli disse: «Viva il re! Viva il re!» 17 Absalom disse a Cusai: «È questo dunque l’affetto che hai per il tuo amico? Perché non sei andato con il tuo amico?» 18 Cusai rispose ad Absalom: «No; io sarò di colui che il Signore e questo popolo e tutti gli uomini d’Israele hanno scelto, e con lui rimarrò. 19 Del resto, di chi sarò io servo? Non lo sarò di suo figlio? Come ho servito tuo padre, così servirò te». 20 Allora Absalom disse ad Aitofel: «Consigliate quello che dobbiamo fare». 21 Aitofel rispose ad Absalom: «Entra dalle concubine di tuo padre, lasciate da lui a custodia del palazzo; quando tutto Israele saprà che ti sei reso odioso a tuo padre, il coraggio di quelli che sono per te sarà fortificato». 22 Fu dunque montata una tenda sulla terrazza per Absalom, e Absalom entrò dalle concubine di suo padre, alla vista di tutto Israele. 23 In quei giorni, un consiglio dato da Aitofel era come una parola data da Dio a uno che lo avesse consultato. Così era di tutti i consigli di Aitofel tanto per Davide quanto per Absalom.
