Timothy joins Paul and Silas

1 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. 2 The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they travelled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

Paul’s vision of the man of Macedonia

6 Paul and his companions travelled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Lydia’s conversion in Philippi

11 From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we travelled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district* of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. 13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshipper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptised, she invited us to her home. ‘If you consider me a believer in the Lord,’ she said, ‘come and stay at my house.’ And she persuaded us.

Paul and Silas in prison

16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.’ 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned round and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!’ At that moment the spirit left her. 19 When her owners realised that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market-place to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, ‘These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practise.’ 22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, ‘Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!’ 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ 31 They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household.’ 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptised. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God – he and his whole household. 35 When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: ‘Release those men.’ 36 The jailer told Paul, ‘The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.’ 37 But Paul said to the officers: ‘They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.’ 38 The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. 39 They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city. 40 After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.

Timotheos blir medarbetare till Paulus och Silas

1 Paulus och Silas kom nu till Derbe och sedan till Lystra. Där träffade de en efterföljare till Jesus som hette Timotheos, en ung man som var son till en kristen* judinna men hade en icke-judisk pappa. 2 De troende i Lystra och Ikonion hade bara gott att säga om honom, 3 och Paulus ville därför att Timotheos skulle följa med dem på deras resa. Men av hänsyn till judarna i området omskar han Timotheos, innan de reste vidare, eftersom alla visste att hans pappa inte var jude. 4 De reste sedan från stad till stad och berättade om vad Jesus sändebud och församlingsledarna i Jerusalem hade beslutat när det gällde troende från andra folk och vilka regler de skulle följa. 5 Församlingarna stärktes i sin tro och för varje dag ökade antalet troende.

Paulus blir kallad till Makedonien

6 Paulus och hans följeslagare reste nu genom Frygien och Galatien, eftersom Guds heliga Ande hade sagt till dem att inte sprida budskapet om Jesus i provinsen Asien den här gången. 7 När de efter ett tag kom fram till Mysiens gräns, tänkte de gå norrut mot Bithynien, men Jesus Ande tillät dem inte att resa dit.* 8 De fortsatte därför genom Mysien och kom till staden Troas. 9 Där fick Paulus på natten se en syn. Han såg en man från Makedonien* stå där och be honom: ”Kom över till Makedonien och hjälp oss.” 10 Vi bestämde oss därför genast att resa över till Makedonien, eftersom vi förstod att Gud ville att vi skulle berätta de glada nyheterna om Jesus även där.*

Lydia från Thyatira börjar tro på Jesus

11 Vi gick ombord på en båt i Troas och seglade rakt över till ön Samothrake och nästa dag vidare till Neapolis. 12 Därifrån fortsatte vi till Filippi, en romersk militärkoloni och en av de ledande städerna i Makedonien. Där stannade vi sedan i flera dagar. 13 När det blev vilodag* gick vi ut ur staden och ner till en flodstrand, där vi antog att man brukade samlas för att be på vilodagen. Och vi satte oss ner och talade till de kvinnor som kommit dit. 14 En av dem hette Lydia. Hon kom från staden Thyatira och handlade med purpurtyger*. Hon var inte judinna men tillbad Israels Gud, och när hon nu lyssnade till oss öppnade Herren Gud hennes hjärta, så att hon tog emot allt som Paulus sa. 15 Hon lät sedan döpa sig tillsammans med alla i sitt hus, och efteråt sa hon: ”Nu när ni ser att jag verkligen tror på Herren Jesus, så måste ni komma och bo hos mig.” Och hon gav sig inte förrän vi gjorde som hon sa.

Paulus och Silas kastas i fängelse

16 När vi en dag var på väg till det ställe där man brukade be, mötte vi en slavflicka som var besatt av en ond ande. Hon kunde spå människor och drog in mycket pengar åt sina ägare. 17 Flickan följde efter Paulus och oss andra och ropade: ”De här männen är den högsta Gudens tjänare och har kommit för att visa er vägen till räddning.” 18 Detta upprepades varenda dag, tills Paulus en dag blev så upprörd att han vände sig om och sa till den onda anden i henne: ”Genom kraften hos Jesus Kristus befaller jag dig att fara ut ur henne.” Och genast lämnade den onda anden henne. 19 Men när hennes ägare såg att de inte längre kunde tjäna pengar på henne, grep de Paulus och Silas och släpade dem inför stadens myndigheter som höll till på torget. 20 Man förde fram dem inför de romerska domarna och sa: ”De här judarna vänder upp och ner på hela staden. 21 De lär folket att göra sådant som är emot den romerska lagen.” 22 Hela folkmassan började då angripa Paulus och Silas, och domarna befallde att man skulle ta av dem kläderna och piska dem med spön. 23 De blev svårt slagna, och efteråt kastades de i fängelse. Fångvaktaren fick order om att vakta dem mycket noga, 24 och han tog därför inga risker utan placerade dem i den innersta cellen, där han låste fast deras ben i en trästock. 25 Runt midnatt satt sedan Paulus och Silas och bad och sjöng lovsånger till Gud, medan de andra fångarna lyssnade. 26 Då kom det plötsligt ett jordskalv, som var så kraftigt att fängelset skakades ända ner i grunden. I samma stund flög alla dörrar upp och kedjorna föll av fångarna. 27 Då vaknade fångvaktaren, och när han fick se att fängelsets alla dörrar stod vidöppna, trodde han att fångarna hade flytt och drog sitt svärd för att begå självmord. 28 Men Paulus ropade till honom: ”Stopp! Gör dig inget illa! Vi är kvar allihop!” 29 Då bad den skräckslagne fångvaktaren om ljus och sprang in och kastade sig på knä framför Paulus och Silas. 30 Sedan förde han ut dem ur cellen och frågade: ”Vad ska jag göra för att bli räddad?” 31 De svarade: ”Tro på Herren Jesus så ska du bli räddad, både du och din familj.” 32 Paulus och Silas fick sedan berätta budskapet om Herren Jesus för fångvaktaren och hela hans familj. 33 Fångvaktaren tog genast hand om dem och tvättade deras sår, trots att det var mitt i natten. Och innan natten var över hade hela familjen låtit döpa sig! 34 Efteråt tog fångvaktaren med sig Paulus och Silas upp till sin bostad och bjöd dem på mat. Både han och familjen var överlyckliga för att de hade kommit till tro på Gud. 35 Nästa morgon skickade domarna sina medhjälpare till fängelset för att meddela att männen skulle släppas fria. 36 Fångvaktaren talade då om detta för Paulus och sa: ”Domarna har beslutat att frige er, så nu behöver ni inte sitta här längre. Gå i frid!” 37 Men Paulus svarade: ”Åh nej, så lätt kommer de inte undan! De har utan rättegång piskat oss offentligt och satt oss i fängelse trots att vi är romerska medborgare. Och nu vill de att vi ska lämna fängelset i hemlighet. Aldrig! Be dem komma hit och själva frige oss.” 38 Medhjälparna berättade då detta för domarna, och när de hörde att Paulus och Silas var romerska medborgare blev de mycket rädda. 39 De kom genast till fängelset och började ursäkta sig. Sedan förde de ut dem och vädjade till dem att lämna staden. 40 Men Paulus och Silas gick först till Lydias hus, där de träffade alla de troende och uppmuntrade dem, och sedan gick de vidare.
