Adonijah sets himself up as king

1 When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2 So his attendants said to him, ‘Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.’ 3 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 The woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no sexual relations with her. 5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, ‘I will be king.’ So he got chariots and horses* ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 (His father had never rebuked him by asking, ‘Why do you behave as you do?’ He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.) 7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support. 8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David’s special guard did not join Adonijah. 9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon. 11 Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, ‘Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David knows nothing about it? 12 Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in to King David and say to him, “My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: ‘Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne’? Why then has Adonijah become king?” 14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and add my word to what you have said.’ 15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. 16 Bathsheba bowed down, prostrating herself before the king. ‘What is it you want?’ the king asked. 17 She said to him, ‘My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the Lord your God: “Solomon your son shall become king after me, and he will sit on my throne.” 18 But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. 19 He has sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king’s sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. 20 My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals.’ 22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23 And the king was told, ‘Nathan the prophet is here.’ So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground. 24 Nathan said, ‘Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? 25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. At this very moment they are eating and drinking with him and saying, “Long live King Adonijah!” 26 But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite. 27 Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?’

David makes Solomon king

28 Then King David said, ‘Call in Bathsheba.’ So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him. 29 The king then took an oath: ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, 30 I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.’ 31 Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground, prostrating herself before the king, and said, ‘May my lord King David live for ever!’ 32 King David said, ‘Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.’ When they came before the king, 33 he said to them: ‘Take your lord’s servants with you and put Solomon my son on my own mule and take him down to Gihon. 34 There shall Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, “Long live King Solomon!” 35 Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.’ 36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, ‘Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. 37 As the Lord was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!’ 38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and put Solomon on King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 40 And all the people went up after him, playing pipes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound. 41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, ‘What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?’ 42 Even as he was speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, ‘Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.’ 43 ‘Not at all!’ Jonathan answered. ‘Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, 45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds with it. That’s the noise you hear. 46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. 47 Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, “May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!” And the king bowed in worship on his bed 48 and said, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.” ’ 49 At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. 50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 Then Solomon was told, ‘Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, “Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.” ’ 52 Solomon replied, ‘If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.’ 53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, ‘Go to your home.’

Adoniya, prétendant au trône

1 Le roi David était très âgé*, on avait beau l’envelopper de couvertures, il n’arrivait plus à se réchauffer. 2 Ses familiers lui proposèrent de lui rechercher une jeune fille vierge qui soit à son service et le soigne: Elle dormira dans tes bras, lui dirent-ils, ainsi mon seigneur le roi se réchauffera. 3 On chercha dans tout le territoire d’Israël une belle jeune fille et l’on trouva Abishag, la Sunamite*, que l’on fit venir auprès du roi. 4 Cette jeune fille était vraiment très belle. Elle prit soin du roi et se mit à son service. Mais le roi n’eut pas de relations conjugales avec elle. 5 A cette époque, Adoniya*, fils de David et de Haggith, exprimait son ambition en prétendant: C’est moi qui régnerai. Il se procura un char, des chevaux* et cinquante hommes qui couraient devant son char. 6 Jamais, sa vie durant, son père ne l’avait réprimandé ou ne lui avait dit: Pourquoi fais-tu cela? En outre, Adoniya était un très beau jeune homme et il était né après Absalom. 7 Il entra en pourparlers avec le général Joab, fils de Tserouya*, et avec le prêtre Abiatar*, et ceux-ci se rallièrent à son parti. 8 Par contre, ni le prêtre Tsadoq, ni Benaya fils de Yehoyada*, ni le prophète Nathan, ni Shimeï*, ni Réï, ni les soldats de la garde personnelle de David ne prirent son parti. 9 Un jour, Adoniya offrit des sacrifices de moutons, de bœufs et de veaux engraissés près de la Pierre-qui-glisse, à côté de Eyn-Roguel. Il y invita tous ses frères, fils du roi, et tous les hommes importants de Juda qui étaient au service du roi. 10 Mais il n’invita pas le prophète Nathan, Benaya, les gardes personnels du roi, ni son demi-frère Salomon.

L’intervention de Nathan et de Bath-Shéba auprès de David

11 Alors Nathan alla trouver Bath-Shéba, la mère de Salomon*, et lui dit: As-tu entendu qu’Adoniya, fils de Haggith, est en train de se faire proclamer roi sans que notre seigneur David le sache? 12 Eh bien! Ecoute: laisse-moi te donner un conseil qui pourra te sauver la vie ainsi qu’à ton fils Salomon. 13 Va immédiatement trouver le roi David et demande-lui: « O roi, mon seigneur, ne m’as-tu pas promis avec serment que mon fils Salomon régnerait après toi et que c’est lui qui siégerait sur ton trône? Alors pourquoi donc Adoniya est-il devenu roi? » 14 Puis Nathan ajouta: Pendant que tu parleras ainsi avec le roi, j’entrerai à mon tour et je compléterai ce que tu auras dit. 15 Bath-Shéba se rendit dans la chambre du roi qui était très vieux et recevait les soins d’Abishag, la Sunamite. 16 Elle s’inclina jusqu’à terre et s’agenouilla devant le roi. Celui-ci lui demanda: Que désires-tu? 17 Elle lui répondit: Mon seigneur, tu as promis à ta servante par un serment au nom de l’Eternel, ton Dieu, que ton fils Salomon régnerait après toi et qu’il siégerait sur ton trône. 18 Voici maintenant qu’Adoniya s’est fait roi à l’insu de mon seigneur le roi. 19 Il a offert en sacrifice beaucoup de bœufs, de veaux engraissés et de moutons, il a invité tous les fils du roi, le prêtre Abiatar et Joab, le chef de l’armée, mais il n’a pas invité ton serviteur Salomon. 20 Pourtant, c’est vers le roi mon seigneur que tout Israël regarde pour que tu déclares à ton peuple qui succédera à mon seigneur le roi sur le trône. 21 Sinon, lorsque le roi mon seigneur aura rejoint ses ancêtres décédés, moi et mon fils Salomon nous serons traités comme des criminels. 22 Pendant qu’elle parlait encore avec le roi, le prophète Nathan arriva. 23 On vint l’annoncer au roi en disant: Voici le prophète Nathan! Il entra en présence du roi et se prosterna devant lui, le visage contre terre. 24 Puis il dit: O roi mon seigneur, est-ce toi qui as décidé qu’Adoniya régnerait après toi et qu’il siégerait sur ton trône? 25 En effet, il est allé aujourd’hui offrir des sacrifices de bœufs, de veaux gras et de moutons en grand nombre, il a invité tous les fils du roi, les chefs de l’armée et le prêtre Abiatar. Ils sont en train de manger et de boire avec lui en criant: « Vive le roi Adoniya! » 26 Mais il ne m’a pas invité, moi qui suis ton serviteur, pas plus que le prêtre Tsadoq, ni Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, ni ton serviteur Salomon. 27 Est-il possible qu’une telle chose se fasse par ordre de mon seigneur le roi sans que tu aies fait connaître à ton serviteur quel est celui qui succédera à mon seigneur le roi sur le trône?

David désigne son successeur

28 Le roi David répondit: Rappelez-moi Bath-Shéba! Elle entra dans la présence du roi et se tint devant lui. 29 Alors le roi lui déclara par serment: Aussi vrai que l’Eternel qui m’a délivré de toutes les détresses est vivant, 30 je te promets de réaliser aujourd’hui même la promesse que je t’ai faite avec serment au nom de l’Eternel, du Dieu d’Israël, lorsque je t’ai dit que ton fils Salomon régnerait après moi et qu’il siégerait sur mon trône à ma place. 31 Bath-Shéba s’inclina le visage contre terre, se prosterna aux pieds du roi et dit: Que mon seigneur le roi David vive à jamais! 32 Puis le roi David ordonna: Appelez-moi le prêtre Tsadoq, le prophète Nathan et Benaya, fils de Yehoyada. Ils entrèrent en présence du roi. 33 Alors le roi ordonna: Rassemblez tous mes serviteurs*. Faites monter mon fils Salomon sur ma propre mule et conduisez-le à la source de Guihôn! 34 Là, le prêtre Tsadoq et le prophète Nathan lui conféreront l’onction pour l’établir roi sur Israël. Vous sonnerez du cor et vous crierez: « Vive le roi Salomon! » 35 Vous remonterez de la source derrière lui, il viendra siéger sur mon trône et régnera à ma place, car c’est lui que j’ai choisi pour être le conducteur d’Israël et de Juda. 36 Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, répondit au roi: Qu’il en soit ainsi! Que l’Eternel, le Dieu de mon seigneur le roi, confirme les paroles que tu as prononcées, 37 et, comme il a été avec mon seigneur le roi, qu’il soit avec Salomon! Qu’il rende son règne encore plus glorieux que ne l’a été celui de mon seigneur le roi David! 38 Alors le prêtre Tsadoq descendit à la source de Guihôn avec le prophète Nathan, avec Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, et avec les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens* de la garde royale, accompagnant Salomon qu’ils avaient fait monter sur la mule du roi David. 39 Le prêtre Tsadoq prit la fiole d’huile* dans la tente* du coffre de l’alliance et conféra l’onction à Salomon. On sonna du cor et tout le peuple s’écria: Vive le roi Salomon! 40 Une foule immense remonta derrière lui, les gens jouaient de la flûte et exultaient de joie, au point que la terre tremblait au bruit de leurs acclamations.

Adoniya se soumet

41 Adoniya et ses convives entendirent tout ce bruit* au moment où ils achevaient leur festin. Et lorsque Joab entendit le son du cor, il demanda: Que signifie ce vacarme dans la ville? 42 Il n’avait pas fini de parler que Jonathan, fils du prêtre Abiatar, survint. Adoniya lui dit: Viens, car tu es un homme de valeur et tu viens certainement apporter de bonnes nouvelles. 43 Jonathan répondit à Adoniya: Au contraire, notre seigneur le roi David a établi Salomon comme roi. 44 Il a envoyé avec lui le prêtre Tsadoq, le prophète Nathan, Benaya, fils de Yehoyada, ainsi que les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens de la garde royale pour qu’ils le fassent monter sur la mule royale 45 et que le prêtre Tsadoq et le prophète Nathan lui confèrent l’onction royale à la source de Guihôn. De là, tout le monde est remonté en poussant des cris de joie et l’excitation s’est répandue dans toute la ville; c’est là le bruit que vous avez entendu. 46 Salomon s’est même assis sur le trône royal, 47 et les ministres du roi sont venus bénir notre seigneur le roi David en disant: « Que ton Dieu rende le nom de Salomon encore plus célèbre que le tien, et son règne encore plus glorieux! » Alors le roi s’est prosterné sur sa couche 48 et il a déclaré: « Béni soit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël qui m’a donné l’un de mes fils comme successeur sur mon trône et m’a permis de le voir aujourd’hui de mes yeux! » 49 A ces mots, tous les invités d’Adoniya furent pris de panique, ils se levèrent et partirent chacun de son côté. 50 Adoniya lui-même eut tellement peur de Salomon qu’il alla saisir les cornes de l’autel à la tente du coffre de l’alliance. 51 On vint dire à Salomon: Voici que, par peur du roi Salomon, Adoniya est allé saisir les cornes de l’autel en disant: « Que le roi Salomon me promette aujourd’hui sous serment qu’il ne me fera pas mettre à mort par l’épée. » 52 Salomon répondit: S’il se conduit en homme loyal, pas un seul de ses cheveux ne tombera à terre; mais s’il agit de manière coupable, il mourra. 53 Puis le roi Salomon envoya des gens pour le faire descendre de l’autel. Adoniya vint se prosterner devant le roi Salomon qui lui dit: Tu peux rentrer chez toi!
