The story of the farmer

1 That same day Jesus left the house and sat by the Sea of Galilee. 2 Large crowds gathered around him. So he got into a boat and sat down. All the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things using stories. He said, ‘A farmer went out to plant his seed. 4 He scattered the seed on the ground. Some fell on a path. Birds came and ate it up. 5 Some seed fell on rocky places, where there wasn’t much soil. The plants came up quickly, because the soil wasn’t deep. 6 When the sun came up, it burned the plants. They dried up because they had no roots. 7 Other seed fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and crowded out the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It produced a crop 100, 60 or 30 times more than what was planted. 9 Whoever has ears should listen.’ 10 The disciples came to him. They asked, ‘Why do you use stories when you speak to the people?’ 11 He replied, ‘Because you have been given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. It has not been given to outsiders. 12 Everyone who has this kind of knowledge will be given more knowledge. In fact, they will have very much. If anyone doesn’t have this kind of knowledge, even what little they have will be taken away from them. 13 Here is why I use stories when I speak to the people. I say, ‘They look, but they don’t really see. They listen, but they don’t really hear or understand. 14 In them the words of the prophet Isaiah come true. He said, ‘ “You will hear but never understand. You will see but never know what you are seeing. 15 The hearts of these people have become stubborn. They can barely hear with their ears. They have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes. They might hear with their ears. They might understand with their hearts. They might turn to the Lord, and then he would heal them.” 16 But blessed are your eyes because they see. And blessed are your ears because they hear. 17 What I’m about to tell you is true. Many prophets and godly people wanted to see what you see. But they didn’t see it. They wanted to hear what you hear. But they didn’t hear it. 18 ‘Listen! Here is the meaning of the story of the farmer. 19 People hear the message about the kingdom but do not understand it. Then the evil one comes. He steals what was planted in their hearts. Those people are like the seed planted on a path. 20 The seed that fell on rocky places is like other people. They hear the message and at once receive it with joy. 21 But they have no roots. So they last only a short time. They quickly fall away from the faith when trouble or suffering comes because of the message. 22 The seed that fell among the thorns is like others who hear the message. But then the worries of this life and the false promises of wealth crowd it out. They keep the message from producing fruit. 23 But the seed that fell on good soil is like those who hear the message and understand it. They produce a crop 100, 60 or 30 times more than the farmer planted.’

The story of the weeds

24 Jesus told the crowd another story. ‘Here is what the kingdom of heaven is like,’ he said. ‘A man planted good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came. The enemy planted weeds among the wheat and then went away. 26 The wheat began to grow and form corn. At the same time, weeds appeared. 27 ‘The owner’s slaves came to him. They said, “Sir, didn’t you plant good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from?” 28 ‘ “An enemy did this,” he replied. ‘The slaves asked him, “Do you want us to go and pull up the weeds?” 29 ‘ “No”, the owner answered. “While you are pulling up the weeds, you might pull up the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the workers what to do. Here is what I will say to them. First collect the weeds. Tie them in bundles to be burned. Then gather the wheat. Bring it into my storeroom.” ’

The stories of the mustard seed and the yeast

31 Jesus told the crowd another story. He said, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. Someone took the seed and planted it in a field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds. But when it grows, it is the largest of all garden plants. It becomes a tree. Birds come and rest in its branches.’ 33 Jesus told them still another story. ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast,’ he said. ‘A woman mixed it into 30 kilograms of flour. The yeast worked its way all through the dough.’ 34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd using stories. He did not say anything to them without telling a story. 35 So the words spoken by the prophet came true. He had said, ‘I will open my mouth and tell stories. I will speak about things that were hidden since the world was made.’

Jesus explains the story of the weeds

36 Then Jesus left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him. They said, ‘Explain to us the story of the weeds in the field.’ 37 He answered, ‘The one who planted the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world. The good seed stands for the people who belong to the kingdom. The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one. 39 The enemy who plants them is the devil. The harvest is judgment day. And the workers are angels. 40 ‘The weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire. That is how it will be on judgment day. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels. They will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin. They will also get rid of all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace. There people will weep and grind their teeth. 43 Then God’s people will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom. Whoever has ears should listen.

The stories of the hidden treasure and the pearl

44 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure that was hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again. He was very happy. So he went and sold everything he had. And he bought that field. 45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who was looking for fine pearls. 46 He found one that was very valuable. So he went away and sold everything he had. And he bought that pearl.

The story of the net

47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net. It was let down into the lake. It caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and gathered the good fish into baskets. But they threw the bad fish away. 49 This is how it will be on judgment day. The angels will come. They will separate the people who did what is wrong from those who did what is right. 50 They will throw the evil people into the blazing furnace. There the evil ones will weep and grind their teeth. 51 ‘Do you understand all these things?’ Jesus asked. ‘Yes’, they replied. 52 He said to them, ‘Every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house. He brings new treasures out of his storeroom as well as old ones.’

A prophet without honour

53 Jesus finished telling these stories. Then he moved on from there. 54 He came to his home town of Nazareth. There he began teaching the people in their synagogue. They were amazed. ‘Where did this man get this wisdom? Where did he get this power to do miracles?’ they asked. 55 ‘Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary? Aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Then where did this man get all these things?’ 57 They were not pleased with him at all. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own town and in his own home.’ 58 He did only a few miracles in Nazareth because the people there had no faith.

1 In quel giorno Gesù, uscito di casa, si mise a sedere presso il mare; 2 e una grande folla si radunò intorno a lui; cosicché egli, salito su una barca, vi sedette; e tutta la folla stava sulla riva. 3 Egli parlò loro di molte cose in parabole*, dicendo: «Il seminatore uscì a seminare. 4 Mentre seminava, una parte del seme cadde lungo la strada; gli uccelli vennero e la mangiarono. 5 Un’altra cadde in luoghi rocciosi, dove non aveva molta terra; e subito spuntò, perché non aveva terreno profondo; 6 ma, levatosi il sole, fu bruciata; e, non avendo radice, inaridì. 7 Un’altra cadde tra le spine; e le spine crebbero e la soffocarono. 8 Un’altra cadde nella buona terra e portò frutto, dando il cento, il sessanta, il trenta per uno. 9 Chi ha orecchi oda». 10 Allora i discepoli si avvicinarono e gli dissero: «Perché parli loro in parabole?» 11 Egli rispose loro: «Perché a voi è dato di conoscere i misteri del regno dei cieli; ma a loro non è dato. 12 Perché a chiunque ha, sarà dato e sarà nell’abbondanza; ma a chiunque non ha, sarà tolto anche quello che ha. 13 Per questo parlo loro in parabole: perché, vedendo, non vedono; e udendo, non odono né comprendono. 14 E si adempie in loro la profezia d’Isaia che dice: “Voi udrete e non comprenderete; guarderete e non vedrete; 15 perché il cuore di questo popolo si è fatto insensibile: sono diventati duri d’orecchi e hanno chiuso gli occhi, affinché non vedano con gli occhi e non odano con gli orecchi, non comprendano con il cuore, non si convertano e io non li guarisca”*. 16 Ma beati gli occhi vostri, perché vedono; e i vostri orecchi, perché odono! 17 In verità io vi dico che molti profeti e giusti desiderarono vedere le cose che voi vedete, e non le videro; e udire le cose che voi udite, e non le udirono.

Spiegazione della parabola del seminatore

18 «Voi dunque ascoltate che cosa significhi la parabola del seminatore! 19 Tutte le volte che uno ode la parola del regno e non la comprende, viene il maligno e porta via quello che è stato seminato nel cuore di lui: questo è quello seminato lungo la strada. 20 Quello seminato in luoghi rocciosi è colui che ode la parola e subito la riceve con gioia, 21 però non ha radice in sé ed è di corta durata; e quando giunge la tribolazione o persecuzione a motivo della parola, è subito sviato. 22 Quello seminato tra le spine è colui che ode la parola; poi le ansiose preoccupazioni mondane e l’inganno delle ricchezze soffocano la parola, che rimane infruttuosa. 23 Quello invece seminato nella terra buona è colui che ode la parola e la comprende; egli quindi porta del frutto e rende il cento, il sessanta e il trenta per uno».

La zizzania e il buon seme

24 Egli propose loro un’altra parabola, dicendo: «Il regno dei cieli può essere paragonato ad un uomo che aveva seminato buon seme nel suo campo. 25 Ma, mentre gli uomini dormivano, venne il suo nemico e seminò della zizzania in mezzo al grano e se ne andò. 26 Quando l’erba germogliò ed ebbe fatto frutto, allora apparve anche la zizzania. 27 E i servi del padrone di casa vennero a dirgli: “Signore, non avevi seminato buon seme nel tuo campo? Come mai, dunque, c’è della zizzania?” 28 Egli disse loro: “Un nemico ha fatto questo”. I servi gli dissero: “Vuoi che andiamo a coglierla?” 29 Ma egli rispose: “No, affinché, cogliendo la zizzania, non sradichiate insieme ad essa anche il grano. 30 Lasciate che tutti e due crescano insieme fino alla mietitura; e, al tempo della mietitura, dirò ai mietitori: ‘Cogliete prima la zizzania, e legatela in fasci per bruciarla; ma il grano, raccoglietelo nel mio granaio’”».

Il granello di senape

31 Egli propose loro un’altra parabola, dicendo: «Il regno dei cieli è simile a un granello di senape che un uomo ha preso e seminato nel suo campo. 32 Esso è il più piccolo di tutti i semi; ma, quando è cresciuto, è maggiore degli ortaggi e diventa un albero; tanto che gli uccelli del cielo vengono a ripararsi tra i suoi rami».

Il lievito

33 Disse loro un’altra parabola: «Il regno dei cieli è simile al lievito che una donna prende e nasconde in tre misure di farina, finché la pasta sia tutta lievitata». 34 Tutte queste cose disse Gesù in parabole alla folla e senza parabole non diceva loro nulla, 35 affinché si adempisse quello che era stato detto per mezzo del profeta: «Aprirò in parabole la mia bocca; proclamerò cose nascoste fin dalla fondazione {del mondo}»*.

Spiegazione della parabola della zizzania

36 Allora Gesù, lasciata la folla, tornò a casa; e i suoi discepoli gli si avvicinarono, dicendo: «Spiegaci la parabola della zizzania nel campo». 37 Egli rispose: «Colui che semina il buon seme è il Figlio dell’uomo; 38 il campo è il mondo; il buon seme sono i figli del regno; la zizzania sono i figli del maligno; 39 il nemico che l’ha seminata è il diavolo; la mietitura è la fine dell’età presente; i mietitori sono angeli. 40 Come dunque si raccoglie la zizzania e si brucia con il fuoco, così avverrà alla fine dell’età presente. 41 Il Figlio dell’uomo manderà i suoi angeli, che raccoglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali e tutti quelli che commettono l’iniquità, 42 e li getteranno nella fornace ardente. Lì ci sarà pianto e stridor di denti. 43 Allora i giusti risplenderanno come il sole nel regno del Padre loro. Chi ha orecchi oda.

La perla di gran valore

44 «Il regno dei cieli è simile a un tesoro nascosto nel campo, che un uomo, dopo averlo trovato, nasconde; e, per la gioia che ne ha, va e vende tutto quello che ha, e compra quel campo. 45 «Il regno dei cieli è anche simile a un mercante che va in cerca di belle perle; 46 e, trovata una perla di gran valore, se n’è andato, ha venduto tutto quello che aveva e l’ha comprata.

La rete

47 «Il regno dei cieli è anche simile a una rete che, gettata in mare, ha raccolto ogni genere di pesci; 48 quando è piena, i pescatori la traggono a riva, poi si mettono a sedere e raccolgono il buono in vasi, e buttano via quello che non vale nulla. 49 Così avverrà alla fine dell’età presente. Verranno gli angeli e separeranno i malvagi dai giusti, 50 e li getteranno nella fornace ardente. Lì ci sarà pianto e stridor di denti. 51 Avete capito tutte queste cose?» Essi gli risposero: «Sì».

Gesù a Nazaret

52 Allora disse loro: «Per questo ogni scriba che diventa un discepolo del regno dei cieli è simile a un padrone di casa, il quale tira fuori dal suo tesoro cose nuove e cose vecchie». 53 Quando Gesù ebbe finito queste parabole, partì di là. 54 Recatosi nella sua patria, insegnava nella loro sinagoga, così che stupivano e dicevano: «Da dove gli vengono tanta sapienza e queste opere potenti? 55 Non è questi il figlio del falegname? Sua madre non si chiama Maria e i suoi fratelli Giacomo, Giuseppe, Simone e Giuda? 56 E le sue sorelle non sono tutte tra di noi? Da dove gli vengono tutte queste cose?» 57 E si scandalizzavano a causa di lui. Ma Gesù disse loro: «Un profeta non è disprezzato che nella sua patria e in casa sua». 58 E lì, a causa della loro incredulità, non fece molte opere potenti.
