The plague on livestock

1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Go to Pharaoh. Tell him, “The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says, ‘Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 2 Do not refuse to let them go. Do not keep holding them back. 3 If you refuse, my powerful hand will bring a terrible plague on you. I will strike your livestock in the fields. I will strike your horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep and goats. 4 But I will treat Israel’s livestock differently from yours. No animal that belongs to the people of Israel will die.’ ” ’ 5 The LORD set a time for the plague. He said, ‘Tomorrow I will send it on the land.’ 6 So the next day the LORD sent it. All the livestock of the Egyptians died. But not one animal that belonged to the Israelites died. 7 Pharaoh searched and found out what had happened. He discovered that not even one animal that belonged to the Israelites had died. But he was still very stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people go.

The plague of boils

8 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, ‘Take handfuls of ashes from a furnace. Let Moses toss them into the air in front of Pharaoh. 9 The ashes will turn into fine dust over the whole land of Egypt. Then painful boils will break out on people and animals all over the land. Their bodies will be covered with them.’ 10 So Moses and Aaron took ashes from a furnace and stood in front of Pharaoh. Moses tossed them into the air. Then boils broke out on people and animals alike. 11 The bodies of all the Egyptians were covered with boils. The magicians couldn’t stand in front of Moses because of the boils that were all over them. 12 But the LORD made Pharaoh stubborn. Pharaoh wouldn’t listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said to Moses.

The plague of hail

13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Get up early in the morning. Go to Pharaoh and say to him, “The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says, ‘Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 14 If you do not let them go, I will send the full force of my plagues against you this time. They will strike your officials and your people. Then you will know that there is no one like me in the whole earth. 15 By now I could have reached out my hand. I could have struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16 But I had a special reason for making you king. I decided to show you my power. I wanted my name to become known everywhere on earth. 17 But you are still against my people. You will not let them go. 18 So at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm ever to fall on Egypt in its entire history. 19 Give an order now to bring your livestock inside to a safe place. Bring in everything that is outside. The hail will fall on all the people and animals that are left outside. They will die.’ ” ’ 20 The officials of Pharaoh who had respect for what the LORD had said obeyed him. They hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. 21 But others didn’t pay attention to what the LORD had said. They left their slaves and livestock outside. 22 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Reach out your hand towards the sky. Then hail will fall all over Egypt. It will beat down on people and animals alike. It will strike everything growing in the fields of Egypt.’ 23 Moses reached out his walking stick towards the sky. Then the LORD sent thunder and hail. Lightning flashed down to the ground. The LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 Hail fell and lightning flashed to and fro. It was the worst storm in Egypt’s entire history. 25 Hail struck everything in the fields all over Egypt. It fell on people and animals alike. It beat down everything growing in the fields. It tore all the leaves off the trees. 26 The only place it didn’t hail was in the area of Goshen. That’s where the people of Israel were. 27 Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. ‘This time I’ve sinned,’ he said to them. ‘The LORD has done what is right. I and my people have done what is wrong. 28 Pray to the LORD, because we’ve had enough thunder and hail. I’ll let you and your people go. You don’t have to stay here any longer.’ 29 Moses replied, ‘When I’ve left the city, I’ll lift up my hands and pray to the LORD. The thunder will stop. There won’t be any more hail. Then you will know that the earth belongs to the LORD. 30 But I know that you and your officials still don’t have any respect for the LORD God.’ 31 The barley was ripe. The flax was in bloom. So they were both destroyed. 32 But the wheat and spelt weren’t destroyed. That’s because they ripen later. 33 Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. Moses lifted up his hands and prayed to the LORD. The thunder and hail stopped. The rain didn’t pour down on the land any longer. 34 Pharaoh saw that the rain, hail and thunder had stopped. So he sinned again. He and his officials became stubborn. 35 So Pharaoh was stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people of Israel go, just as the LORD had said through Moses.

La mortalità del bestiame

1 Allora il Signore disse a Mosè: «Va’ dal faraone e digli: “Così dice il Signore, il Dio degli Ebrei: ‘Lascia andare il mio popolo, perché mi serva. 2 Se tu rifiuti di lasciarlo andare e lo trattieni ancora, 3 la mano del Signore sarà sul tuo bestiame che è nei campi, sui cavalli, sugli asini, sui cammelli, sui buoi e sulle pecore; ci sarà una tremenda mortalità. 4 Però il Signore farà distinzione tra il bestiame d’Israele e il bestiame d’Egitto; nulla morirà di tutto quello che appartiene ai figli d’Israele’”». 5 Il Signore fissò un termine, dicendo: «Domani il Signore farà questo nel paese». 6 L’indomani il Signore lo fece e tutto il bestiame d’Egitto morì; ma del bestiame dei figli d’Israele non morì neppure un capo. 7 Il faraone mandò a vedere, ed ecco che neppure un capo del bestiame degli Israeliti era morto. Ma il cuore del faraone rimase ostinato ed egli non lasciò andare il popolo.

Ulceri sulle persone e sugli animali

8 Il Signore disse a Mosè e ad Aaronne: «Prendete delle manciate di fuliggine di fornace e Mosè la getti verso il cielo, sotto gli occhi del faraone. 9 Essa diventerà una polvere che coprirà tutto il paese d’Egitto e produrrà ulceri che si trasformeranno in pustole sulle persone e sugli animali in tutto il paese d’Egitto». 10 Essi presero dunque della fuliggine di fornace e si presentarono al faraone; Mosè la gettò verso il cielo ed essa produsse ulceri che si trasformarono in pustole sulle persone e sugli animali. 11 I maghi non poterono presentarsi davanti a Mosè, a causa delle ulceri, perché le ulceri erano sui maghi come su tutti gli Egiziani. 12 Ma il Signore indurì il cuore del faraone e questi non diede ascolto a Mosè e ad Aaronne, come il Signore aveva detto a Mosè.

La grandine e il fuoco

13 Poi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Àlzati di buon mattino, presentati al faraone e digli: “Così dice il Signore, il Dio degli Ebrei: ‘Lascia andare il mio popolo, perché mi serva; 14 poiché questa volta manderò tutte le mie piaghe sul tuo cuore, sui tuoi servitori e sul tuo popolo, affinché tu sappia che nessuno è come me su tutta la terra. 15 Perché se io avessi steso la mia mano e avessi percosso di peste te e il tuo popolo, tu saresti stato sterminato dalla terra. 16 Invece io ti ho lasciato vivere per questo: per mostrarti la mia potenza e perché il mio nome sia proclamato su tutta la terra. 17 Ti opponi ancora al mio popolo per non lasciarlo andare? 18 Ecco, domani verso quest’ora, io farò cadere una grandine così forte che non ce ne fu mai di simile in Egitto, dal giorno della sua fondazione, fino ad oggi. 19 Or dunque, fa’ mettere al riparo il tuo bestiame e tutto quello che hai nei campi. La grandine cadrà su tutta la gente, su tutti gli animali che si troveranno nei campi e che non saranno stati raccolti in casa, ed essi moriranno’”». 20 Tra i servitori del faraone, quelli che temettero la parola del Signore fecero rifugiare nelle case i loro servi e il loro bestiame, 21 ma quelli che non tennero conto della parola del Signore lasciarono i loro servi e il loro bestiame nei campi. 22 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Stendi la tua mano verso il cielo e cada grandine su tutto il paese d’Egitto, sulla gente, sugli animali e sopra ogni erba dei campi, nel paese d’Egitto». 23 Mosè stese il suo bastone verso il cielo e il Signore mandò tuoni e grandine, e un fuoco si avventò sulla terra; il Signore fece piovere grandine sul paese d’Egitto. 24 Così ci fu grandine e il fuoco guizzava continuamente in mezzo alla grandine; la grandine fu così forte, come non ce n’era stata di simile in tutto il paese d’Egitto, da quando era diventato nazione. 25 La grandine percosse, in tutto il paese d’Egitto, tutto quello che era nei campi: uomini e bestie; la grandine percosse ogni erba dei campi e fracassò ogni albero della campagna. 26 Solamente nella terra di Goscen, dov’erano i figli d’Israele, non cadde grandine. 27 Allora il faraone mandò a chiamare Mosè e Aaronne e disse loro: «Questa volta io ho peccato; il Signore è giusto, mentre io e il mio popolo siamo colpevoli. 28 Pregate il Signore perché cessino questi grandi tuoni e la grandine. Io vi lascerò andare e non sarete più trattenuti». 29 Mosè gli disse: «Quando uscirò dalla città, tenderò le mani verso il Signore; i tuoni cesseranno e non ci sarà più grandine, affinché tu sappia che la terra è del Signore. 30 Ma quanto a te e ai tuoi servitori io so che ancora non temerete Dio il Signore». 31 Ora il lino e l’orzo erano stati colpiti, perché l’orzo era in spiga e il lino in fiore; 32 ma il grano e la spelta non furono colpiti, perché tardivi. 33 Mosè dunque, lasciato il faraone, uscì dalla città, tese le mani verso il Signore e i tuoni e la grandine cessarono e non cadde più pioggia sulla terra. 34 Quando il faraone vide che la pioggia, la grandine e i tuoni erano cessati, continuò a peccare, si ostinò in cuor suo, lui e i suoi servitori. 35 Il cuore del faraone si indurì ed egli non lasciò andare i figli d’Israele, come il Signore aveva detto per bocca di Mosè.
