The clothes for the priests

1 ‘Let your brother Aaron be brought to you from among the Israelites. His sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar must also be brought. They will serve me as priests. 2 Make sacred clothes for your brother Aaron. When he is wearing them, people will honour him. They will have respect for him. 3 Speak to all the skilled workers. I have given them the skill to do this kind of work. Tell them to make clothes for Aaron. He will wear them when he is set apart to serve me as priest. 4 The workers must make a chest cloth, a linen apron and an outer robe. They must also make an inner robe, a turban and a belt. They must make sacred clothes for your brother Aaron and his sons. Then they will serve me as priests. 5 Make the workers use thin gold wire, and blue, purple and bright red yarn, and fine linen.

The linen apron

6 ‘Make the linen apron out of thin gold wire, and out of blue, purple and bright red yarn, and out of finely twisted linen. Have a skilled worker make it. 7 It must have two shoulder straps joined to two of its corners. 8 Its skilfully made waistband must be like the apron. The waistband must be part of the apron itself. Make the waistband out of thin gold wire, and out of blue, purple and bright red yarn, and out of finely twisted linen. 9 ‘Get two onyx stones. Carve the names of the sons of Israel on them. 10 Arrange them in the order of their birth. Carve six names on one stone and six on the other. 11 Carve the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a jewel cutter would carve them. Then put the stones in fancy gold settings. 12 Connect them to the shoulder straps of the linen apron. The stones will stand for the sons of Israel. Aaron must carry the names on his shoulders as a constant reminder while he is serving the LORD. 13 Make fancy gold settings. 14 Make two braided chains out of pure gold. Make them like ropes. Join the chains to the settings.

The chest cloth

15 ‘Make a chest cloth that will be used for making decisions. Have a skilled worker make it. Make it like the linen apron. Use thin gold wire, and blue, purple and bright red yarn, and finely twisted linen. 16 Make it 25 centimetres square. Fold it in half. 17 Put four rows of valuable jewels on it. Put carnelian, chrysolite and beryl in the first row. 18 Put turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald in the second row. 19 Put jacinth, agate and amethyst in the third row. 20 And put topaz, onyx and jasper in the fourth row. Put them in fancy gold settings. 21 Use a total of 12 stones. Use one for each of the names of the sons of Israel. Each stone must be carved with the name of one of the 12 tribes. 22 ‘Make braided chains out of pure gold for the chest cloth. Make them like ropes. 23 Make two gold rings for the chest cloth. Connect them to two corners of it. 24 Join the two gold chains to the rings at the corners of the chest cloth. 25 Join the other ends of the chains to the two settings. Join them to the shoulder straps on the front of the linen apron. 26 Make two gold rings. Connect them to the other two corners of the chest cloth. Put them on the inside edge next to the apron. 27 Make two more gold rings. Connect them to the bottom of the shoulder straps on the front of the apron. Put them close to the seam. Put them right above the waistband of the apron. 28 The rings of the chest cloth must be tied to the rings of the apron. Tie them to the waistband with blue cord. Then the chest cloth will not swing out from the linen apron. 29 ‘When Aaron enters the Holy Room, he will carry the names of the sons of Israel over his heart. Their names will be on the chest cloth of decision. They will be a continuing reminder while he is serving the LORD. 30 Also put the Urim and Thummim into the chest cloth. Then they will be over Aaron’s heart when he comes to serve the LORD. In that way, Aaron will always have what he needs to make decisions for the people of Israel. He will carry the Urim and Thummim over his heart while he is serving the LORD.

More clothes for the priests

31 ‘Make the outer robe of the linen apron completely out of blue cloth. 32 In the centre of the robe, make an opening for the head of the priest. Make an edge like a collar around the opening. Then it will not tear. 33 Make pomegranates out of blue, purple and bright red yarn. Sew them around the hem of the robe. Sew gold bells between them. 34 Sew a gold bell between every two pomegranates all around the hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear the robe when he serves as priest. The bells will jingle when he enters the Holy Room while he is serving the LORD. And they will jingle when he goes out. Then he will not die. 36 ‘Make a plate out of pure gold. Carve words on it as if it were an official seal. Carve the words Set apart for the LORD. 37 Tie the plate to the front of the turban with a blue cord. 38 Aaron must wear this plate on his forehead all the time. He will be held responsible for all the sacred gifts the Israelites set apart. Then the LORD will accept the gifts. 39 ‘Make the inner robe out of fine linen. And make the turban out of fine linen. The belt must be made by a person who sews skilfully. 40 Make inner robes, belts and caps for Aaron’s sons. When they are wearing them, people will honour his sons. They will also have respect for them. 41 Put all these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons. Then pour olive oil on them and prepare them to serve me. Set them apart to serve me as priests. 42 ‘Make linen underwear that reaches from the waist to the thigh. 43 Aaron and the priests in his family line must wear it when they enter the tent of meeting. They must also wear it when they approach the altar to serve in the Holy Room. Then they will not be found guilty and die. ‘For all time to come, that will be a law for Aaron and the priests in his family line.

I paramenti del sommo sacerdote

1 «Tu farai accostare a te, tra i figli d’Israele, tuo fratello Aaronne e i suoi figli con lui perché siano sacerdoti: Aaronne, Nadab, Abiu, Eleazar e Itamar, figli di Aaronne. 2 A tuo fratello Aaronne farai dei paramenti sacri, in segno di dignità e di gloria. 3 Parlerai a tutti gli uomini sapienti, che io ho riempito di spirito di sapienza, ed essi faranno i paramenti di Aaronne perché sia consacrato e mi serva come sacerdote. 4 Questi sono i paramenti che faranno: un pettorale*, un efod*, un manto, una tunica lavorata a maglia, un turbante e una cintura. Faranno dunque dei paramenti sacri per Aaronne tuo fratello e per i suoi figli perché mi servano come sacerdoti. 5 Si serviranno d’oro, di filo violaceo, porporino, scarlatto e di lino fino.

L’efod

6 «Faranno l’efod d’oro, di filo violaceo, porporino, scarlatto, e di lino fino ritorto, lavorato artisticamente. 7 Esso avrà alle due estremità due spalline, che si uniranno per fissarlo. 8 La cintura che è sull’efod e lo avvolge sarà del medesimo lavoro dell’efod, tutto d’un pezzo con esso; sarà d’oro, di filo color violaceo, porporino, scarlatto e di lino fino ritorto. 9 Prenderai due pietre d’ònice e vi inciderai sopra i nomi dei figli d’Israele: 10 sei nomi sopra una pietra, gli altri sei nomi sopra la seconda pietra, in ordine di nascita. 11 Inciderai su queste due pietre i nomi dei figli d’Israele come fa un incisore quando incide un sigillo; le farai incastonare in montature d’oro. 12 Metterai le due pietre sulle spalline dell’efod. Quelle pietre saranno un memoriale per i figli d’Israele; e Aaronne porterà i loro nomi davanti al Signore sulle sue due spalle, come memoriale. 13 E farai delle montature d’oro 14 e due catenelle d’oro puro che intreccerai come un cordone, e metterai nelle montature le catenelle così intrecciate.

Il pettorale

15 «Farai pure il pettorale del giudizio, artisticamente lavorato; lo farai come il lavoro dell’efod: d’oro, di filo violaceo, porporino, scarlatto e di lino fino ritorto. 16 Sarà quadrato e doppio; avrà una spanna di lunghezza e una spanna di larghezza. 17 V’incastonerai una serie di pietre: quattro file di pietre; nella prima fila ci sarà un sardonio, un topazio e uno smeraldo; 18 nella seconda fila, un rubino, uno zaffiro e un calcedonio; 19 nella terza fila, un’opale, un’agata e un’ametista; 20 nella quarta fila, un crisolito, un ònice e un diaspro. Queste pietre saranno incastonate nelle loro montature d’oro. 21 Le pietre corrisponderanno ai nomi dei figli d’Israele, saranno dodici, secondo i loro nomi; saranno incise come dei sigilli, ciascuna con il nome di una delle tribù d’Israele. 22 Sul pettorale farai anche delle catenelle d’oro puro, intrecciate come cordoni. 23 Poi farai due anelli d’oro e li metterai alle due estremità del pettorale. 24 Fisserai i due cordoni d’oro ai due anelli alle estremità del pettorale, 25 attaccherai gli altri due capi dei cordoni alle due montature e li metterai sulle spalline dell’efod, sul davanti. 26 Farai due anelli d’oro e li metterai alle altre due estremità del pettorale, sull’orlo interiore volto verso l’efod. 27 Farai due altri anelli d’oro e li metterai alle due spalline dell’efod, in basso, sul davanti, vicino al punto dove avviene la giuntura, al di sopra della cintura artistica dell’efod. 28 Si fisserà il pettorale mediante i suoi anelli agli anelli dell’efod con un cordone violaceo, affinché il pettorale sia al di sopra della cintura artistica dell’efod, e non si possa staccare dall’efod. 29 Così Aaronne, quando entrerà nel santuario, porterà i nomi dei figli d’Israele nel pettorale del giudizio, sul suo cuore, per conservarne sempre il ricordo davanti al Signore. 30 Metterai sul pettorale del giudizio l’urim e il tummim*; essi staranno sul cuore di Aaronne quando egli si presenterà davanti al Signore. Così Aaronne porterà sempre il giudizio dei figli d’Israele sul suo cuore, davanti al Signore.

Il manto dell’efod

31 «Farai anche il manto dell’efod, tutto di color violaceo. 32 Esso avrà, in mezzo, un’apertura per passarvi il capo; l’apertura avrà intorno un orlo tessuto, come l’apertura di una corazza, perché non si strappi. 33 All’orlo inferiore del manto, tutto intorno, farai delle melagrane di colore violaceo, porporino e scarlatto; in mezzo a esse, tutt’intorno, porrai dei sonagli d’oro: 34 un sonaglio d’oro e una melagrana, un sonaglio d’oro e una melagrana, sull’orlo del manto, tutto intorno. 35 Aaronne se lo metterà per fare il servizio; quando egli entrerà nel luogo santo davanti al Signore e quando ne uscirà, si udrà il suono, ed egli non morirà.

Il diadema di santità

36 «Farai anche una piastra d’oro puro, e su essa inciderai, come s’incide sopra un sigillo: Santo al Signore. 37 La fisserai con un nastro violaceo sul turbante e starà sulla sua parte anteriore. 38 Starà sulla fronte di Aaronne, e Aaronne porterà le colpe commesse dai figli d’Israele nelle cose sante che consacreranno, in ogni genere di sante offerte; essa starà sempre sulla sua fronte, per renderli graditi alla presenza del Signore.

I paramenti dei sacerdoti

39 «Farai pure la tunica di lino fino, lavorata a maglia; farai un turbante di lino fino e una cintura ricamata. 40 Per i figli di Aaronne farai delle tuniche, farai delle cinture, farai delle mitre in segno di dignità e come ornamento. 41 Ne vestirai tuo fratello Aaronne e i suoi figli con lui; li ungerai, li consacrerai e li santificherai perché mi servano come sacerdoti. 42 Farai loro anche delle mutande di lino per coprire la loro nudità; esse andranno dai fianchi alle cosce. 43 Aaronne e i suoi figli le porteranno quando entreranno nella tenda di convegno, o quando si avvicineranno all’altare per fare il servizio nel luogo santo, perché non si rendano colpevoli e non muoiano. Questa è una regola perenne per lui e per la sua discendenza dopo di lui.
