1 One day Ahithophel said to Absalom, ‘Here’s what I suggest. Choose 12,000 men. Start out tonight and go after David. 2 Attack him while he’s tired and weak. Fill him with terror. Then all the people with him will run away. Don’t strike down anyone except the king. 3 Bring all the other people back. After the man you want to kill is dead, everyone else will return to you. And none of the people will be harmed.’ 4 Ahithophel’s plan seemed good to Absalom. It also seemed good to all the elders of Israel. 5 But Absalom said, ‘Send for Hushai, the Arkite. Then we can find out what he suggests as well.’ 6 Hushai came to him. Absalom said, ‘Ahithophel has given us his advice. Should we do what he says? If we shouldn’t, tell us what you would do.’ 7 Hushai replied to Absalom, ‘The advice Ahithophel has given you isn’t good this time. 8 You know your father and his men. They are fighters. They are as strong as a wild bear whose cubs have been stolen from her. Besides, your father really knows how to fight. He won’t spend the night with his troops. 9 In fact, he’s probably hiding in a cave or some other place right now. Suppose he attacks your troops first. When people hear about it, they’ll say, “Many of the troops who followed Absalom have been killed.” 10 Then the hearts of your soldiers will melt away in fear. Even those as brave as a lion will be terrified. That’s because everyone in Israel knows that your father is a fighter. They know that those with him are brave. 11 ‘So here’s what I suggest. Bring together all the men of Israel from the town of Dan all the way to Beersheba. They are as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. You yourself should lead them into battle. 12 Then we’ll attack David no matter where we find him. As dew completely covers the ground, we’ll completely overpower his entire army. We won’t leave him or any of his men alive. 13 He might try to get away by going into a city. If he does, all of us will bring ropes to that city. We’ll drag the whole city down into the valley. Not even a pebble of that city will be left.’ 14 Absalom and all the men of Israel agreed. They said, ‘The advice of Hushai, the Arkite, is better than the advice of Ahithophel.’ The LORD had decided that Ahithophel’s good advice would fail. The LORD wanted to bring horrible trouble on Absalom. 15 Hushai spoke to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests. He said, ‘Ahithophel has given advice to Absalom and the elders of Israel. He suggested that they should do one thing. But I suggested something else. 16 Send a message right away. Tell David, “Don’t spend the night in the desert at a place where people cross the River Jordan. Make sure you go on across. If you don’t, you and all the people with you will be swallowed up.” ’ 17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel just outside Jerusalem. They knew they would be in danger if anyone saw them entering the city. A female servant was supposed to go and tell them what had happened. Then they were supposed to go and tell King David. 18 But a young man saw Jonathan and Ahimaaz and told Absalom about it. So the two men left right away. They went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard. They climbed down into it. 19 The man’s wife got a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well. Then she scattered corn on the covering. So no one knew that the men were hiding in the well. 20 Absalom’s men came to the house. They asked the woman, ‘Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?’ She answered, ‘They went across the brook.’ When the men looked around, they didn’t find anyone. So they returned to Jerusalem. 21 After they had gone, Jonathan and Ahimaaz climbed out of the well. They went to tell King David what they had found out. They said to him, ‘Go across the river right away. Ahithophel has told Absalom how to come after you and strike you down.’ 22 So David and all the people with him started out. They went across the River Jordan. By sunrise, everyone had crossed over. 23 Ahithophel saw that his advice wasn’t being followed. So he put a saddle on his donkey. He started out for his house in his home town. When he arrived, he made everything ready for his death. He made out his will. Then he killed himself. And so he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom dies

24 David went to Mahanaim. Absalom went across the River Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had made Amasa commander of the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether. Jether belonged to the family line of Ishmael. He had married Abigail. She was the daughter of Nahash and the sister of Zeruiah. Zeruiah was the mother of Joab. 26 Absalom and the Israelites camped in the land of Gilead. 27 David came to Mahanaim. Shobi, the son of Nahash, met him there. Shobi was from Rabbah in the land of Ammon. Makir, the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, met him there too. So did Barzillai from Rogelim in the land of Gilead. 28 They brought beds, bowls and clay pots. They brought wheat, barley, flour, and corn that had been cooked. They brought beans and lentils. 29 They brought honey, butter, sheep, and cheese that was made from cows’ milk. They brought all that food for David and his people to eat. They said, ‘These people have become tired. They’ve become hungry and thirsty in the desert.’

Cusai rende vano il consiglio di Aitofel

1 Poi Aitofel disse ad Absalom: «Lasciami scegliere dodicimila uomini; partirò e inseguirò Davide questa notte stessa; 2 gli piomberò addosso mentre egli è stanco e ha le braccia fiacche; lo spaventerò e tutta la gente che è con lui si darà alla fuga. Colpirò il re solo 3 e ricondurrò a te tutto il popolo; l’uomo che tu cerchi vale quanto il ritorno di tutti; così tutto il popolo sarà in pace». 4 Questo discorso piacque ad Absalom e a tutti gli anziani d’Israele. 5 Tuttavia Absalom disse: «Chiamate ancora Cusai, l’Archita, e sentiamo quel che anch’egli dirà». 6 Quando Cusai fu venuto da Absalom, questi gli disse: «Aitofel ha parlato così e così; dobbiamo fare come ha detto lui? Se no, parla tu!» 7 Cusai rispose ad Absalom: «Questa volta il consiglio dato da Aitofel non è buono». 8 Cusai soggiunse: «Tu conosci tuo padre e i suoi uomini, e sai che sono gente valorosa e che hanno l’animo esasperato come un’orsa nella campagna quando le sono stati rapiti i figli; poi tuo padre è un guerriero e non passerà la notte con il popolo. 9 Senza dubbio egli è ora nascosto in qualche buca o in qualche altro luogo; e avverrà che, se fin da principio ne cadranno alcuni dei tuoi, chiunque lo verrà a sapere dirà: “Tra la gente che seguiva Absalom c’è stata una strage”. 10 Allora il più valoroso, anche se avesse un cuor di leone, si avvilirà, perché tutto Israele sa che tuo padre è un prode e che quelli che ha con sé sono valorosi. 11 Perciò io consiglio che si raduni presso di te tutto Israele da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba, numeroso come la sabbia che è sul lido del mare, e che tu in persona vada alla battaglia. 12 Così lo raggiungeranno in qualunque luogo egli si troverà, e gli cadranno addosso come la rugiada cade sul suolo; e di tutti quelli che sono con lui non ne scamperà uno solo. 13 Se egli si ritira in qualche città, tutto Israele cingerà di funi quella città e noi la trascineremo nel torrente in modo che non se ne trovi più nemmeno una pietruzza». 14 Absalom e tutti gli uomini d’Israele dissero: «Il consiglio di Cusai, l’Archita, è migliore di quello di Aitofel». Il Signore aveva stabilito di rendere vano il buon consiglio di Aitofel, per far cadere la sciagura sopra Absalom. 15 Allora Cusai disse ai sacerdoti Sadoc e Abiatar: «Aitofel ha consigliato Absalom e gli anziani d’Israele così e così e io ho consigliato in questo modo. 16 Ora mandate in fretta a informare Davide e ditegli: “Non passare la notte nelle pianure del deserto, ma senz’altro va’ oltre, affinché il re con tutta la gente che ha con sé non rimanga sopraffatto”». 17 Gionatan e Aimaas stavano appostati presso En-Roghel; una serva andò a informarli, ed essi andarono a informare il re Davide. Essi infatti non potevano entrare in città in modo palese. 18 Un ragazzo però li aveva visti e aveva avvisato Absalom; ma i due partirono di corsa e giunsero a Baurim a casa di un uomo che aveva nel suo cortile una cisterna. 19 Quelli vi si calarono; e la donna di casa prese una coperta, la distese sulla bocca della cisterna e vi sparse su del grano; così nessuno ne seppe nulla. 20 I servi di Absalom vennero in casa di quella donna e chiesero: «Dove sono Aimaas e Gionatan?» La donna rispose loro: «Hanno attraversato il ruscello». Quelli si misero a cercarli; e, non potendoli trovare, tornarono a Gerusalemme. 21 Appena se ne furono andati, i due uscirono dalla cisterna e andarono a informare il re Davide. Gli dissero: «Alzatevi e affrettatevi ad attraversare l’acqua; perché ecco qual è il consiglio che Aitofel ha dato a vostro danno. 22 Allora Davide si mosse con tutta la gente che era con lui e passò il Giordano. All’alba neppure uno era rimasto che non avesse passato il Giordano. 23 Aitofel, vedendo che il suo consiglio non era stato seguito, sellò il suo asino e partì per andarsene a casa sua, nella sua città. Mise in ordine le cose della sua casa e si impiccò. Così morì e fu sepolto nella tomba di suo padre.

Davide a Maanaim

24 Davide giunse a Maanaim. Anche Absalom attraversò il Giordano, con tutta la gente d’Israele. 25 Absalom aveva messo a capo dell’esercito Amasa, al posto di Ioab. Amasa era figlio di un uomo chiamato Itra, l’Ismaelita, il quale aveva avuto relazioni con Abigail, figlia di Nacas e sorella di Seruia, madre di Ioab. 26 Israele e Absalom si accamparono nel paese di Galaad. 27 Quando Davide fu giunto a Maanaim, Sobi, figlio di Nacas, che era di Rabba, città degli Ammoniti, Machir, figlio di Ammiel da Lodebar, e Barzillai, il Galaadita di Roghelim, 28 portarono dei letti, dei catini, dei vasi di terra, del grano, dell’orzo, della farina, del grano arrostito, delle fave, delle lenticchie, dei legumi arrostiti, 29 del miele, del burro, delle pecore, dei formaggi di vacca per Davide e per la gente che era con lui, affinché mangiassero; perché dicevano: «Questa gente deve avere patito fame, stanchezza e sete nel deserto».
