The story of the widow who would not give up

1 Jesus told his disciples a story. He wanted to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said, ‘In a certain town there was a judge. He didn’t have any respect for God or care about what people thought. 3 A widow lived in that town. She came to the judge again and again. She kept begging him, “Make things right for me. Someone is treating me badly.” 4 ‘For some time the judge refused. But finally he said to himself, “I don’t have any respect for God. I don’t care about what people think. 5 But this widow keeps bothering me. So I will see that things are made right for her. If I don’t, she will someday come and attack me!” ’ 6 The Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unfair judge says. 7 God’s chosen people cry out to him day and night. Won’t he make things right for them? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, God will see that things are made right for them. He will make sure it happens quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find people on earth who have faith?’

The story of the Pharisee and the tax collector

9 Jesus told a story to some people who were sure they were right with God. They looked down on everyone else. 10 He said to them, ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee. The other was a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed. “God, I thank you that I am not like other people,” he said. “I am not like robbers or those who do other evil things. I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week. And I give a tenth of all I get.” 13 ‘But the tax collector stood further away than the Pharisee. He would not even look up to heaven. He brought his hand to his heart and prayed. He said, “God, have mercy on me. I am a sinner.” 14 ‘I tell you, the tax collector went home accepted by God. But not the Pharisee. All those who lift themselves up will be made humble. And those who make themselves humble will be lifted up.’

Little children are brought to Jesus

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus. They wanted him to place his hands on the babies. When the disciples saw this, they told the people to stop. 16 But Jesus asked the children to come to him. ‘Let the little children come to me,’ he said. ‘Don’t keep them away. God’s kingdom belongs to people like them. 17 What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who will not receive God’s kingdom like a little child will never enter it.’

Rich people and the kingdom of God

18 A certain ruler asked Jesus a question. ‘Good teacher’, he said, ‘what must I do to receive eternal life?’ 19 ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good except God. 20 You know what the commandments say. “Do not commit adultery. Do not commit murder. Do not steal. Do not be a false witness. Honour your father and mother.” ’ 21 ‘I have obeyed all those commandments since I was a boy,’ the ruler said. 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have. Give the money to those who are poor. You will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.’ 23 When the ruler heard this, he became very sad. He was very rich. 24 Jesus looked at him. Then he said, ‘How hard it is for rich people to enter God’s kingdom! 25 Is it hard for a camel to go through the eye of a needle? It is even harder for someone who is rich to enter God’s kingdom!’ 26 Those who heard this asked, ‘Then who can be saved?’ 27 Jesus replied, ‘Things that are impossible with people are possible with God.’ 28 Peter said to him, ‘We have left everything we had in order to follow you!’ 29 ‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Has anyone left home or wife or husband or brothers or sisters or parents or children for God’s kingdom? 30 They will receive many times as much in this world. In the world to come they will receive eternal life.’

Jesus speaks a third time about his coming death

31 Jesus took the 12 disciples to one side. He told them, ‘We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true. 32 He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will make fun of him. They will laugh at him and spit on him. 33 They will whip him and kill him. On the third day, he will rise from the dead!’ 34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them. So they didn’t know what Jesus was talking about.

A blind beggar receives his sight

35 Jesus was approaching Jericho. A blind man was sitting by the side of the road begging. 36 The blind man heard the crowd going by. He asked what was happening. 37 They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’ 38 So the blind man called out, ‘Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!’ 39 Those who led the way commanded him to stop. They told him to be quiet. But he shouted even louder, ‘Son of David! Have mercy on me!’ 40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When the man came near, Jesus spoke to him. 41 ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked. ‘Lord, I want to be able to see,’ the blind man replied. 42 Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight. Your faith has healed you.’ 43 Right away he could see. He followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

1 En gång, när Jesus ville visa sina efterföljare hur viktigt det är att alltid be och inte ge upp, berättade han den här bilden för dem: 2 ”I en stad fanns det en domare, en ond man som inte visade respekt för vare sig Gud eller människor. 3 I samma stad fanns också en änka som ständigt och jämt kom till honom och sa: ’Hjälp mig att få ut det jag ska ha av min motpart.’ 4 Under lång tid struntade han i henne, men till slut började hon gå honom på nerverna. Då sa han till sig själv: ’Visserligen brukar jag inte visa respekt för vare sig Gud eller människor, men den här kvinnan gör mig galen. Det är bäst jag ser till att hon får det hon har rätt till. Jag är trött på hennes ständiga tjat!’ ” 6 Sedan sa Herren Jesus: ”Om till och med en så ond och orättvis man som denna domare kan ge med sig, 7 tror ni inte då att Gud vill ge rätt åt dem som tillhör honom, när de ber till honom dag och natt? 8 Jo, jag försäkrar er att han inte ska låta dem vänta. Men frågan är: Kommer jag, Människosonen*, att hitta någon som tror, den dag jag kommer tillbaka?”

9 En annan gång vände sig Jesus till några som skröt med att de alltid följde Guds vilja och som såg ner på andra människor. Jesus berättade en bild för dem, och sa: 10 ”Två män gick till templet för att be. En av dem var farisé*, den andre var tullindrivare*. 11 Farisén stod för sig själv och bad: ’Tack Gud för att jag inte är en syndare som alla andra, och särskilt inte som tullindrivaren där borta! Jag lurar inte någon, jag stjäl inte från andra, jag är inte otrogen i mitt äktenskap, 12 jag fastar två gånger i veckan och jag ger Gud en tiondel* av allt jag tjänar.’ 13 Men tullindrivaren stod på avstånd och vågade inte ens lyfta blicken mot himlen utan slog händerna för bröstet i förtvivlan och ropade: ’Gud, förlåt mig, jag är en syndare!’ 14 Och jag säger er, att det var han, och inte farisén, som gick hem skuldfri inför Gud! För den som upphöjer sig själv ska förödmjukas, men den som ödmjukar sig själv ska upphöjas.”

Jesus ber för barnen

15 Några föräldrar kom också fram till Jesus med sina små barn för att han skulle röra vid dem och be för dem. Men hans efterföljare fick se det och körde bort dem. 16 Då kallade Jesus till sig barnen och sa till sina efterföljare: ”Skicka inte iväg dem. Låt barnen komma till mig, för alla som vill tillhöra Guds eget folk måste bli som de.* 17 Ja, jag försäkrar er, att den som inte blir som ett litet barn kommer överhuvudtaget inte att få tillhöra Guds eget folk.”

Jesus talar med en rik man

18 En högt uppsatt man frågade Jesus: ”Gode mästare, vad ska jag göra för att få evigt liv?” 19 ”Varför kallar du mig god?” frågade Jesus. ”Det finns bara en som är god, och det är Gud. 20 Och hans bud kan du redan: ’Du ska inte vara otrogen i ditt äktenskap, Du ska inte mörda, Du ska inte stjäla, Du ska inte ljuga eller vittna falskt, Visa respekt för dina föräldrar.*’ ” 21 Mannen svarade: ”Alla dessa bud har jag hållit ända sedan jag var ung.” 22 Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Det är bara en sak till du behöver göra. Sälj allt du äger och ge pengarna till de fattiga. Då ska du få en skatt i himlen. Kom sedan och följ mig.” 23 Men när mannen hörde det, gick han bedrövad därifrån, för han var mycket rik. 24 Jesus såg efter honom när han gick och sa sedan till sina efterföljare: ”Hur svårt är det inte för den som har pengar att få tillhöra Guds eget folk!* 25 Det är lättare för en kamel att komma igenom ett nålsöga än för en som är rik att underordna sig Gud så att han får tillhöra Guds eget folk.” 26 De som hörde detta utropade: ”Vem i all världen kan då bli räddad?” 27 Jesus svarade: ”Ingen, mänskligt sett. Men för Gud är allting möjligt!” 28 Då sa Petrus: ”Vi har lämnat allt vi ägde för att följa dig.” 29 ”Ja”, svarade Jesus, ”och jag försäkrar er, att var och en som lämnar hus eller fru eller man eller syskon eller föräldrar eller barn för att få tillhöra Guds eget folk,* 30 han ska få mångdubbelt igen redan här i tiden och dessutom evigt liv i den kommande världen.”

Jesus förutsäger för tredje gången att han ska dö

31 Jesus samlade sedan sina tolv närmaste efterföljare omkring sig och sa till dem: ”Vi är nu på väg till Jerusalem, och där ska allt det som Gud har låtit profeterna* skriva om mig, Människosonen*, bli verklighet. 32 Jag ska bli förrådd och överlämnad till de romerska myndigheterna*, och jag ska bli hånad och misshandlad. De ska spotta på mig 33 och piska mig och till slut döda mig, och på den tredje* dagen ska jag uppstå från de döda igen.” 34 Men hans efterföljare fattade inte ett dugg. Den verkliga betydelsen av det som Jesus förutsa var gömd för dem, och därför begrep de ingenting.

Jesus botar en blind tiggare utanför Jeriko

35 På sin väg mot Jerusalem närmade sig Jesus staden Jeriko, tillsammans med en stor folkmassa. Och då satt där en blind man vid vägkanten och tiggde. Mannen hörde folket komma på vägen och frågade nyfiket vad som stod på. 37 När han då fick höra att det var Jesus från Nasaret som kom, 38 började han ropa: ”Jesus, du som ska ärva kung Davids tron,* ha medlidande med mig!” 39 Folket som gick framför Jesus försökte få honom att hålla tyst, men han ropade bara ännu högre: ”Du som ska ärva kung Davids tron, ha medlidande med mig!” 40 När Jesus hörde detta, stannade han och sa till folket att leda fram mannen till honom. Och han frågade honom sedan: 41 ”Vad vill du att jag ska göra för dig?””Herre”, bad mannen, ”jag vill kunna se igen!” 42 Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Du kan se igen! Din tro har botat dig.” 43 Och genast kunde mannen se! Sedan följde han efter Jesus och hyllade Gud, och alla som såg det ärade Gud.
