Peter explains his actions

1 The apostles and the believers all through Judea heard that Gentiles had also received God’s word. 2 Peter went up to Jerusalem. There the Jewish believers found fault with him. 3 They said, ‘You went into the house of Gentiles. You ate with them.’ 4 Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story. 5 ‘I was in the city of Joppa praying,’ he said. ‘There I had a vision. I saw something that looked like a large sheet. It was being let down from heaven by its four corners. It came down to where I was. 6 I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth. There were also wild animals, reptiles and birds. 7 Then I heard a voice speaking to me. “Get up, Peter,” the voice said. “Kill and eat.” 8 ‘I replied, “No, Lord! I will not! Nothing that is not pure and ‘clean’ has ever entered my mouth.” 9 ‘A second time the voice spoke from heaven. The voice said, “Do not say anything is not pure that God has made ‘clean’. ” 10 This happened three times. Then the sheet was pulled up into heaven. 11 ‘Just then three men stopped at the house where I was staying. They had been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 The Holy Spirit told me not to let anything keep me from going with them. These six brothers here went with me. We entered the man’s house. 13 He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house. The angel said, “Send to Joppa for Simon Peter. 14 He has a message to bring to you. You and your whole family will be saved through it.” 15 ‘As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them. He came just as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the Lord’s words. “John baptised with water,” he had said. “But you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” 17 God gave them the same gift he gave those of us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. So who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?’ 18 When they heard this, they didn’t object anymore. They praised God. They said, ‘So then, God has allowed even Gentiles to turn away from their sins. He did this so that they could live.’

The believers in Antioch

19 Some believers had been scattered by the suffering that unbelievers had caused them. They were scattered after Stephen was killed. Those believers travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch. But they spread the word only among Jews. 20 Some believers from Cyprus and Cyrene went to Antioch. There they began to speak to Greeks also. They told them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s power was with them. Large numbers of people believed and turned to the Lord. 22 The church in Jerusalem heard about this. So they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad. He told them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 Barnabas was a good man. He was full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Large numbers of people came to know the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26 He found him there. Then he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church. They taught large numbers of people. At Antioch the believers were called Christians for the first time. 27 In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them was named Agabus. He stood up and spoke through the Spirit. He said there would not be nearly enough food anywhere in the Roman world. This happened while Claudius was the emperor. 29 The believers decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. All of them helped as much as they could. 30 They sent their gift to the elders through Barnabas and Saul.

1 Snart fick Jesus sändebud och de andra troende i Judeen höra att också andra folk hade tagit emot budskapet om Jesus. 2 Men när Petrus kom tillbaka till Jerusalem, började de troende judarna anklaga honom och säga: 3 ”Varför har du besökt sådana som inte är judar och till och med ätit med dem?” 4 Då berättade Petrus för dem vad som hade hänt. Han sa: 5 ”En dag, när jag var i staden Joppe, kom Guds Ande över mig medan jag bad och jag fick se en syn. Jag såg något som liknade en stor duk sänkas ner från himlen. Duken var upphängd i sina fyra hörn och kom ända ner till mig. 6 När jag undersökte den närmare, fick jag se att den innehöll alla slags vilda och tama djur, både sådana som flyger och sådana som lever på land. 7 Och jag hörde en röst säga: ’Petrus, res dig upp, slakta och ät.’ 8 Men jag svarade: ’Nej, aldrig, Herre. Jag har aldrig ätit något som Gud har förbjudit i Moses lag.’* 9 Men rösten från himlen hördes igen och sa: ’Om Gud har gjort något tillåtet, ska du inte behandla det som förbjudet.’ 10 Detta hände tre gånger, och sedan drogs alltihop upp till himlen igen. 11 I samma stund kom tre män till huset där vi var. De hade skickats från Caesarea för att hämta mig, 12 och Guds Ande sa till mig att följa med dem utan att oroa mig för att de inte var judar. De här sex männen från församlingen i Joppe följde också med mig, och vi kom så småningom hem till den man som skickat budbärarna. 13 Mannen talade om för oss att en ängel hade visat sig för honom i hans hus och sagt till honom: ’Skicka bud till Joppe och låt hämta Simon Petrus, 14 för han har något att berätta, som kan rädda både dig och de andra i ditt hus.’ 15 Men jag hann inte mer än börja tala, förrän Guds heliga Ande kom och fyllde dem, precis som han fyllde oss den första tiden. 16 Då mindes jag att Herren Jesus hade sagt: ’Johannes döpte er med vatten, men ni ska bli döpta med Guds heliga Ande.’ 17 Så om nu Gud gav dessa människor samma gåva som han gav till oss judar som tror på Herren Jesus Kristus, vad kunde jag göra åt det?” 18 När de andra hörde detta var det slut på deras invändningar, och de började hylla Gud och sa: ”Tänk att Gud också har gett andra folk chansen att vända sig bort från synden och få evigt liv.”

Församlingen i Antiochia

19 De troende från Jerusalem, som hade skingrats under den förföljelse som startade efter Stefanos död, hade nu kommit ända till Fenikien, Cypern och Antiochia. De hade under vägen spridit budskapet om Jesus, fast bara till judarna. 20 Men några av de troende, som var från Cypern och Kyrene, reste till Antiochia, och där talade de också till icke-judar och berättade de glada nyheterna om Herren Jesus. 21 Och Gud gav dem kraft, så att ett stort antal människor kom till tro och började följa Herren. 22 Ryktet om detta nådde efter ett tag församlingen i Jerusalem som genast skickade dit Barnabas. 23 När han kom fram till Antiochia och fick se vad Gud i sin godhet hade gjort i den staden, blev han glad och uppmanade de troende att av hela hjärtat hålla sig till Herren Jesus. 24 Barnabas var en kärleksfull man, fylld av Guds heliga Ande och stark i tron, och han fick därför vara med och vinna ännu fler för Herren. 25 Efter detta reste Barnabas vidare till Tarsos för att söka upp Saul, 26 och när han hittat honom tog han honom med tillbaka till Antiochia. Där stannade de sedan tillsammans i församlingen under ett helt år och undervisade ett stort antal människor. Det var i Antiochia som Jesus efterföljare första gången kallades kristna*. 27 Under den här tiden kom några personer från Jerusalem dit som Gud hade gett förmågan att framföra budskap från honom. 28 En av dem, som hette Agabos, drevs av Guds Ande att resa sig upp på en samling och förutsäga att en svår hungersnöd skulle drabba hela romarriket ‑ den inträffade sedan under kejsar Claudius regering. 29 Jesus efterföljare i Antiochia beslöt därför att skicka understöd till de troende i Judeen, och att var och en skulle ge så mycket han hade råd med. 30 De samlade sedan ihop gåvorna och överlämnade dem till Barnabas och Saul, som fick i uppdrag att överlämna dem till församlingsledarna i Jerusalem.
