1 Als das ganze Volk durch den Jordan gezogen war, sagte der HERR zu Josua: 2 »Wählt zwölf Männer aus dem Volk, je einen aus jedem Stamm, 3 und gebt ihnen folgende Anweisung: ›Holt von der Stelle, wo die Priester stehen, zwölf ´große` Steine aus dem Flussbett. Tragt sie zu dem Platz, an dem ihr heute Nacht lagern werdet, und legt sie dort nieder.‹« 4 Da rief Josua die zwölf Männer, die er aus den zwölf Stämmen Israels bestimmt hatte, 5 und forderte sie auf: »Geht in den Jordan zur Lade des HERRN, eures Gottes. Jeder von euch soll sich einen Stein auf die Schulter laden, ´dann entspricht ihre Anzahl` der Zahl der Stämme Israels. 6 Sie sollen euch als Denkmal dienen. Wenn eure Kinder euch später einmal fragen, was es mit den Steinen auf sich hat, 7 dann antwortet ihnen: ›Der Jordan staute sich vor der Bundeslade des HERRN; das Wasser stand still, als sie den Fluss durchquerte. Daran sollen diese Steine uns für alle Zeiten erinnern.‹« 8 Die zwölf Männer* führten Josuas Anordnung aus und holten zwölf Steine aus dem Jordan, für jeden Stamm einen, so wie der HERR es Josua befohlen hatte. Sie trugen die Steine bis zum Lagerplatz und legten sie dort nieder. 9 Mitten im Jordan, genau an der Stelle, wo die Priester mit der Bundeslade gestanden hatten, errichtete Josua ´ein weiteres Denkmal aus` zwölf Steinen. Es ist noch heute dort zu finden. 10 Die Priester mit der Bundeslade blieben so lange im Fluss stehen, bis alles ausgeführt war, was der HERR dem Volk durch Josua aufgetragen hatte. Schon Mose hatte Josua entsprechende Anweisungen gegeben. Die Israeliten beeilten sich, durch ´das Flussbett` zu kommen. 11 Erst als alle den Fluss durchquert hatten, stiegen auch die Priester mit der Lade des HERRN heraus und nahmen ihren Platz an der Spitze des Zuges wieder ein. 12 Die ´Männer der` Stämme Ruben und Gad und des halben Stammes Manasse gingen bewaffnet vor den ´übrigen` Israeliten her, wie bereits Mose es befohlen hatte. 13 Insgesamt zogen ´aus diesen Stämmen` etwa 40.000 bewaffnete Männer vor den Augen des HERRN zum Kampf in die Ebene von Jericho. 14 An diesem Tag verschaffte der HERR Josua bei allen Israeliten Achtung und Ansehen*. Sie begegneten ihm nun mit derselben Ehrfurcht, mit der sie Mose begegnet waren, und so blieb es sein Leben lang. 15 Der HERR hatte zu Josua gesagt: 16 »Befiehl nun den Priestern, die die Lade mit den Gesetzestafeln* tragen, aus dem Flussbett zu steigen.« 17 Josua gab den Befehl, 18 und sobald die Priester mit der Bundeslade des HERRN ihre Füße auf das trockene Ufer setzten, kehrte das Wasser des Jordans ins Flussbett zurück und trat wie zuvor über die Ufer. 19 Es war am zehnten Tag des ersten Monats, als die Israeliten den Jordan durchquerten. Sie errichteten ihr Lager bei Gilgal an der Ostgrenze ´des Gebiets` von Jericho. 20 Dort stellte Josua die zwölf Steine, die sie aus dem Jordan mitgenommen hatten, ´als Denkmal` auf 21 und sagte zu den Israeliten: »Wenn eure Nachkommen eines Tages ihre Eltern fragen, was es mit diesen Steinen auf sich hat, 22 dann soll man ihnen erklären, dass Israel an dieser Stelle den Jordan trockenen Fußes durchquert hat. 23 Denn der HERR, euer Gott, ließ das Wasser des Jordans vor euch austrocknen, bis ihr auf der anderen Seite angekommen wart. Genauso hat der HERR, euer Gott, beim Schilfmeer gehandelt: Er ließ es vor uns austrocknen, bis wir hindurch gezogen waren. 24 ´Dies tat er`, damit alle Völker der Erde erkennen, wie groß seine Macht ist. Und auch ihr sollt für alle Zeiten dem HERRN, eurem Gott, in Ehrfurcht begegnen.«

1 After the whole nation had gone across the River Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua. He said, 2 ‘Choose 12 men from among the people. Choose one from each tribe. 3 Tell them to get 12 stones from the middle of the river. They must pick them up from right where the priests stood. They must carry the stones over with all of you. And they must put them down at the place where you will stay tonight.’ 4 So Joshua called together the 12 men he had appointed from among the Israelites. There was one man from each tribe. 5 He said to them, ‘Go back to the middle of the River Jordan. Go to where the ark of the LORD your God is. Each one of you must pick up a stone. You must carry it on your shoulder. There will be as many stones as there are tribes in Israel. 6 The stones will serve as a reminder to you. In days to come, your children will ask you, “What do these stones mean?” 7 Tell them that the LORD cut off the flow of water in the River Jordan. Tell them its water stopped flowing when the ark of the covenant of the LORD went across. The stones will always remind the Israelites of what happened there.’ 8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took 12 stones from the middle of the River Jordan. There was one stone for each of the tribes of Israel. It was just as the LORD had told Joshua. The people carried the stones with them to their camp. There they put them down. 9 Joshua also piled up 12 stones in the middle of the river. He piled them up right where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are still there to this very day. 10 The priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the River Jordan. They stayed there until the people had done everything the LORD had commanded Joshua. It was just as Moses had instructed Joshua. All the people went across quickly. 11 As soon as they did, the ark of the LORD and the priests also went across to the other side. The people were watching them. 12 Among the people who went across the river were men from the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh. The men were ready for battle. They went across ahead of the rest of the Israelites. It was just as Moses had instructed them. 13 There were about 40,000 of them. All of them were ready for battle. They went across in front of the ark of the LORD. They marched to the plains around Jericho. They were prepared to go to war. 14 That day the LORD honoured Joshua in the eyes of all the Israelites. They had respect for Joshua as long as he lived. They respected him just as much as they had respected Moses. 15 Then the LORD spoke to Joshua. He said, 16 ‘Command the priests to come up out of the River Jordan. They are carrying the ark where the tablets of the covenant law are kept.’ 17 So Joshua gave a command to the priests. He said, ‘Come up out of the River Jordan.’ 18 Then the priests came up out of the river. They were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. As soon as they stepped out on dry ground, the water of the Jordan began to flow again. It went over its banks, just as it had done before. 19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up out of the River Jordan. They camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 Joshua set up the 12 stones at Gilgal. They were the ones the people had taken out of the Jordan. 21 Then he spoke to the Israelites. He said, ‘In days to come, your children after you will ask their parents, “What do these stones mean?” 22 Their parents must tell them, “Israel went across the River Jordan on dry ground.” 23 The LORD your God dried up the Jordan for you until you had gone across it. He did to the River Jordan the same thing he had done to the Red Sea. He dried up the Red Sea ahead of us until we had gone across it. 24 He did it so that all the nations on earth would know that he is powerful. He did it so that you would always have respect for the LORD your God.’
