1 In der Landschaft Gilead lebte ein Mann namens Jiftach, der sich in vielen Kämpfen bewährt hatte. Seine Mutter war eine Prostiuierte. Sein Vater hieß Gilead.*

2 Gilead hatte auch mit seiner Ehefrau einige Söhne. Als diese erwachsen waren, jagten sie Jiftach aus dem Haus und sagten: »Du bekommst nichts vom Erbe unseres Vaters, denn du stammst von einer anderen Frau!«

3 So musste Jiftach vor seinen Brüdern fliehen. Er ließ sich in der Gegend von Tob nieder. Dort schlossen sich ihm Männer an, die nichts zu verlieren hatten. Mit ihnen ging er auf Raubzüge.

4 Einige Zeit später fielen die Ammoniter mit ihrem Heer in Israel ein.

5 Da* machten sich die führenden Männer von Gilead auf den Weg ins Gebiet von Tob, um Jiftach zurückzuholen.

6 Sie baten ihn: »Komm und führ uns im Kampf gegen die Ammoniter!«

7 Doch Jiftach erwiderte: »Ihr habt mich so gehasst, dass ihr mich aus meiner Familie* vertrieben habt.* Und jetzt, wo ihr in Schwierigkeiten steckt, kommt ihr zu mir?«

8 Die führenden Männer antworteten: »Ja – wir wenden uns an dich, weil wir deine Hilfe brauchen.* Bitte komm und kämpfe mit uns gegen die Ammoniter. Wenn du das tust, machen wir dich zum Herrscher über ganz Gilead.«

9 Jiftach fragte nach: »Ihr wollt mich also zu eurem Herrscher machen, wenn ich mit euch gegen die Ammoniter kämpfe und der HERR mich siegen lässt?«

10 Die führenden Männer von Gilead erklärten: »Der HERR ist unser Zeuge: Genauso soll es geschehen!«

11 Da ging Jiftach mit ihnen ´nach Mizpa`. Dort setzte ihn das Volk als Herrscher und Heerführer ein, und Jiftach wiederholte feierlich vor dem HERRN, was er mit den führenden Männern vereinbart hatte*.

Jiftach versucht, den Krieg mit den Ammonitern abzuwenden

12 Als Nächstes sandte Jiftach Boten zum König der Ammoniter und ließ ihn fragen: »Was hast du gegen mich? Warum bist du in mein Land eingefallen und willst Krieg mit mir führen?«

13 Der ammonitische König gab Jiftachs Boten zur Antwort: »Ihr Israeliten habt mein Land weggenommen, als ihr aus Ägypten gekommen seid: das ganze Gebiet zwischen den Flüssen Arnon und Jabbok und ´ im Westen` bis an den Jordan. Gib es mir jetzt im Guten wieder zurück!«

14 Daraufhin sandte Jiftach noch einmal Boten zum König der Ammoniter

15 und ließ ihm ausrichten: »So spricht Jiftach: Israel hat weder den Moabitern noch den Ammonitern ihr Land weggenommen.

16 Es war vielmehr so: Nachdem die Israeliten Ägypten verlassen hatten, zogen sie durch die Wüste, ´durchquerten` das Schilfmeer und kamen nach Kadesch.

17 Von dort sandten sie Boten zum König der Edomiter und baten ihn: ›Lass uns durch dein Land ziehen!‹ Aber er erlaubte es ihnen nicht. Auch der König von Moab lehnte ihre Bitte ab. So blieb das Volk zunächst in Kadesch

18 und wich dann in die Wüste aus, um das Gebiet von Edom und Moab zu umgehen. Sie zogen an der Ostgrenze Moabs entlang und lagerten schließlich jenseits des Flusses Arnon. Aber das Gebiet Moabs, dessen Nordgrenze der Arnon markiert, betraten sie nicht.

19 Von dort schickte das Volk Israel Boten zum Amoriterkönig Sihon nach Heschbon und bat ihn: ›Lass uns auf dem Weg zu unserem Land durch dein Land ziehen.‹

20 Sihon glaubte ihnen nicht, dass sie sein Gebiet lediglich durchqueren wollten. Er rief sein Volk zu den Waffen, sammelte seine Truppen bei Jahaz und griff Israel an.

21 Doch der HERR, der Gott Israels, gab Sihon und sein gesamtes Heer in die Gewalt der Israeliten. Sie gewannen die Schlacht und nahmen das Land der Amoriter in Besitz. Es waren die Amoriter, die das ganze Gebiet

22 vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok und von der Wüste bis zum Jordan bewohnt hatten, und von ihnen eroberten es die Israeliten.

23 Und es war der HERR, der Gott Israels, der dafür sorgte, dass unser Volk die Amoriter besiegen und ihr Land einnehmen konnte. Und jetzt willst du uns vertreiben?

24 Wenn dein Gott Kemosch für dich ein Gebiet erobert, dann betrachtest du es als deinen Besitz. Genauso betrachten wir das Land, das unser Gott, der HERR, für uns erobert hat, als unseren Besitz.

25 Denkst du, dass du mächtiger bist als Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König von Moab? Er hat es nicht gewagt, unser Volk herauszufordern, geschweige denn einen Krieg anzufangen.

26 Seit dreihundert Jahren leben wir Israeliten nun schon in Heschbon und Aroër mitsamt den dazugehörenden Dörfern und Städten entlang des Arnon-Flusses. Warum habt ihr uns diese Gegend während all der Jahre nicht weggenommen?

27 Was mich angeht: Ich habe dir nichts Böses getan. Aber du tust Unrecht, wenn du Krieg gegen mich führst. Der HERR ist Richter. Er wird entscheiden, ob wir Israeliten im Recht sind oder ihr Ammoniter!«

Jiftach besiegt die Ammoniter

28 Doch der ammonitische König ließ sich durch die Botschaft, die Jiftach ihm gesandt hatte, nicht von seinem Vorhaben abbringen.

29 Da kam der Geist des HERRN auf Jiftach. Er durchzog das ganze Gebiet von Gilead und Manasse, ´um weitere Truppen zu sammeln`. Dann kehrte er wieder nach Mizpa in Gilead zurück und zog von dort in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter.

30 Jiftach legte vor dem HERRN ein Gelübde ab und sagte: »Wenn du mir den Sieg über die Ammoniter gibst

31 und ich wohlbehalten heimkehre, dann soll das Erste, das mir aus meiner Haustür entgegenkommt, dir gehören. Ich werde es dir als Brandopfer darbringen.«

32 Dann zog er in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter, und der HERR gab sie in seine Gewalt.

33 Jiftach eroberte das ganze Gebiet von Aroër bis nach Minnit und Abel-Keramim und nahm zwanzig befestigte Städte ein. Für die Ammoniter war es eine vernichtende Niederlage, und sie mussten sich Israels Macht beugen.

Jiftach muss sein Versprechen halten

34 Als Jiftach nach Mizpa zurückkehrte und sich seinem Haus näherte, kam seine Tochter aus der Tür. Zur Begrüßung schlug sie die Handpauke und tanzte ´vor Freude`. Sie war sein einziges Kind. Jiftach hatte keine weiteren Söhne oder Töchter.

35 Als er sie sah, zerriss er ´vor Trauer` sein Obergewand und rief: »O meine Tochter, du brichst mir das Herz! Ausgerechnet du stürzt mich ins Unglück! Ich habe dem HERRN ein Versprechen gegeben und kann nicht zurück.«

36 Sie antwortete: »Mein Vater, wenn du dem HERRN ein Versprechen gegeben hast, dann ´musst du es halten`. Tu mit mir, was du versprochen hast. Schließlich hat der HERR dir geholfen, dich an den Ammonitern zu rächen.«

37 Dann fügte sie hinzu: »Ich habe nur eine Bitte: Gewähre mir noch zwei Monate. Ich möchte mit meinen Freundinnen ins Hügelland* hinuntergehen und darüber trauern, dass ich als unverheiratetes Mädchen sterben werde*.«

38 »Geh nur«, sagte ihr Vater und gab ihr zwei Monate Zeit. So ging sie mit ihren Freundinnen ins Hügelland und beweinte ihr Schicksal.

39 Danach kam sie zurück, und ihr Vater tat, was er dem HERRN versprochen hatte. Sie starb als unberührtes Mädchen.* Daraus entstand in Israel der Brauch,

40 dass die jungen Frauen jedes Jahr vier Tage lang gemeinsam weggehen, um der Tochter Jiftachs aus Gilead zu gedenken.

1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

2 And Gilead' wife bare him sons; and his wife' sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father' house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father' house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto . And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent : and Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD', and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
