1Der Stamm von Josefs erstgeborenem Sohn Manasse ´bekam zwei Gebiete zugeteilt. Östlich des Jordans` hatten die Nachkommen Machirs die Landschaften Baschan und Gilead erhalten, weil sie kampferprobte Männer waren. Machir war der älteste Sohn Manasses und Vater Gileads.2Nun wurde den Nachkommen von Manasses übrigen Söhnen und deren Sippen ´westlich des Jordans` ihr Gebiet zugewiesen: den Sippen Abiëser, Helek, Asriël, Schechem, Hefer und Schemida.3Zelofhad, der Sohn Hefers und Enkel Gileads aus der Sippe Machir vom Stamm Manasse, hatte keine Söhne, sondern nur Töchter. Sie hießen Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milka und Tirza.4Diese Frauen gingen zum Priester Eleasar, zu Josua, dem Sohn Nuns, und zu den führenden Männern des Volkes und sagten: »Der HERR hat Mose befohlen, uns einen Anteil am Gebiet der Sippe unseres Vaters als Erbbesitz zu geben.« Josua gehorchte dem Befehl des HERRN und teilte ihnen im Gebiet der Sippe ihres Vaters einen Erbbesitz zu.5So bekam der Stamm Manasse zehn Landanteile* ´westlich des Jordans`, zusätzlich zu den Gebieten Baschan und Gilead, die östlich des Jordans liegen.6Denn die weiblichen Nachkommen Manasses erhielten ´im Westen` genau wie die männlichen Nachkommen ihren Anteil am Erbbesitz. Das Land Gilead ´im Osten` dagegen wurde nur unter den männlichen Nachkommen Manasses aufgeteilt.7Das Gebiet Manasses grenzt ´im Norden` an das Stammesgebiet von Ascher. Die Südgrenze verläuft von Michmetat in der Nähe von Sichem in Richtung Jaschub bei der Quelle von Tappuach*.8Das Umland von Tappuach gehört zum Stamm Manasse, die Grenzstadt Tappuach selbst jedoch zu Efraim.9Die Grenze führt dann weiter hinab zum Flusstal von Kana. Südlich des Tals gibt es Städte, die zwar im Stammesgebiet von Manasse liegen, aber zum Stamm Efraim gehören. Nördlich des Flusstals liegt das Hauptgebiet Manasses, es erstreckt sich ´nach Westen` bis zum Mittelmeer.10Der Fluss Kana bildet also die Grenze zwischen Efraim und Manasse. Für beide Stammesgebiete ist das Mittelmeer die ´West` grenze. Im Norden grenzt Manasse an das Gebiet des Stammes Ascher und im Osten an das von Issachar.11In den Stammesgebieten von Issachar und Ascher gehören einige Städte und deren Bewohner zu Manasse: Bet-Schean mit seinen Tochterstädten, Jibleam mit seinen Tochterstädten, Dor mit seinen Tochterstädten, En-Dor mit seinen Tochterstädten, Taanach mit seinen Tochterstädten und Megiddo mit seinen Tochterstädten. – Mit der dritten Stadt ist Nafet-Dor gemeint. –*12Der Stamm Manasse konnte diese Städte allerdings nicht erobern. So gelang es den Kanaanitern, dort wohnen zu bleiben.13´Später`, als die Israeliten immer mächtiger wurden, zwangen sie die Kanaaniter zur Fronarbeit. Aber sie vertrieben sie nicht.
Die Stämme Efraim und Manasse fordern von Josua mehr Land
14Die Nachkommen Josefs fragten Josua: »Warum hast du uns bei der Landverteilung nur den Anteil eines einzigen Stammes zugelost? Wir sind doch sehr zahlreich, weil der HERR uns reich gesegnet hat.«15Josua antwortete: »Wenn ihr so zahlreich seid, dass euch das Bergland von Efraim zu wenig Raum bietet, dann zieht in das Waldgebiet, das die Perisiter und Rafaïter bewohnen, und rodet dort Land für euch!«16Die Nachkommen Josefs erwiderten: »Das Bergland reicht uns nicht aus, und unten im Flachland leben die Kanaaniter. Sie haben überall eiserne Streitwagen*, von der Ebene Jesreel bis hinab nach Bet-Schean mit seinen Tochterstädten.«17Josua ermutigte die Nachkommen Josefs, die Stämme Efraim und Manasse: »Gerade weil ihr ein zahlreiches und mächtiges Volk seid, wird es nicht bei dem Stück Land bleiben, das euch durch das Los zugeteilt wurde.18Ihr bekommt doch auch das bewaldete Bergland mit seinen Ausläufern. Ihr werdet es roden. Und ihr werdet die Kanaaniter vertreiben, selbst wenn sie noch so stark sind und eiserne Streitwagen besitzen.«
