1Josef warf sich über seinen Vater, küsste ihn und weinte um ihn.2Dann befahl er seinen Leibärzten, seinen Vater einzubalsamieren. Die Einbalsamierung3dauerte wie üblich vierzig Tage, und das ägyptische Volk trauerte siebzig Tage lang um Jakob.4Als die Trauerzeit vorüber war, sagte Josef zu den königlichen Hofbeamten: »Bitte* richtet dem Pharao aus,5dass mein Vater mir vor seinem Tod ´ein Versprechen abgenommen hat` und mich schwören ließ: ›Wenn ich sterbe, dann bestatte mich in dem Grab, das ich in Kanaan für mich vorbereitet habe!‹ Deshalb möchte ich nun dorthin reisen und meinen Vater begraben. Dann komme ich wieder zurück.«6Der Pharao ließ ihm sagen: »Du kannst deinen Vater in Kanaan bestatten, wie du es ihm geschworen hast.«7So reiste Josef nach Kanaan, um seinen Vater zu begraben. Die obersten Hofbeamten des Pharaos und die höchsten Würdenträger Ägyptens begleiteten ihn.8Josefs eigene Familie war dabei, dazu seine Brüder und die Familie seines Vaters. Nur die Kinder und das Vieh blieben in Goschen.9Sogar eine Abteilung Streitwagen und Reiter gab ihnen das Geleit. Es war ein gewaltiger Trauerzug.10Sie kamen nach Goren-Atad, das am östlichen Ufer des Jordans liegt, und hielten eine große und würdevolle Trauerfeier. Sieben Tage lang ließ Josef für seinen Vater die Totenklage halten.11Die Kanaaniter, die in der Nähe wohnten, beobachteten die Feier und sagten: »Seht, die Ägypter sind in großer Trauer!« Deshalb wird dieser Ort auch Abel-Mizrajim (»Trauer der Ägypter«)* genannt.12Danach erfüllten Jakobs Söhne den letzten Wunsch ihres Vaters:13Sie brachten ihn in das Land Kanaan und bestatteten ihn in der Höhle auf dem Grundstück von Machpela östlich von Mamre. Abraham hatte dieses Grundstück einst von dem Hetiter Efron als Grabstelle für seine Familie gekauft.14Nachdem Josef seinen Vater beigesetzt hatte, kehrte er mit seinen Brüdern und allen anderen, die ihn begleitet hatten, nach Ägypten zurück.
Josefs Großmut gegenüber seinen Brüdern
15Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters bekamen es Josefs Brüder mit der Angst zu tun. Sie sagten zueinander: » ´Was machen wir`, wenn Josef immer noch einen Groll auf uns hegt und uns alles heimzahlen will, was wir ihm angetan haben?«16Sie ließen Josef ausrichten: »Dein Vater hat uns vor seinem Tod aufgetragen:17›Bittet Josef, dass er euch das große Unrecht vergibt, das ihr ihm zugefügt habt!‹ Darum bitten wir dich nun: Vergib uns, was wir dir angetan haben. Wir dienen doch demselben Gott wie ´du und` unser Vater!« Als Josef das hörte, musste er weinen.18Später kamen seine Brüder selbst zu ihm, fielen vor ihm nieder und berührten mit ihrer Stirn den Boden. »Wir sind deine Diener«, sagten sie, » ´du kannst mit uns machen, was du willst.` «19Doch er beruhigte sie: »Habt keine Angst! Ich maße mir nicht an, Gottes Stelle einzunehmen.20Ihr hattet Böses mit mir vor, aber Gott hat alles zum Guten gewendet. Er hat auf diese Weise vielen Menschen das Leben erhalten. Das kann man bis heute sehen.21Ihr braucht also nichts zu befürchten. Ich werde für euch und eure Familien sorgen.« Mit diesen Worten tröstete und ermutigte Josef seine Brüder.
Josefs letzter Wunsch und sein Tod
22Josef und alle anderen Nachkommen seines Vaters blieben in Ägypten wohnen. Josef wurde 110 Jahre alt23und sah noch Efraims Kinder und Enkel. Er erlebte auch noch, wie Machir, dem Sohn Manasses, Kinder geboren wurden, und nahm sie feierlich in seine Familie auf.*24´Als Josef merkte, dass sein Ende nahte`, sagte er zu seinen Brüdern: »Ich sterbe bald. Aber Gott wird sich um euch kümmern und sich eurer annehmen. Er wird euch aus Ägypten herausführen und in das Land bringen, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob versprochen hat.«25Josef nahm seinen Brüdern und den anderen Nachkommen Jakobs* ein Versprechen ab: »Schwört mir, dass ihr meine Gebeine mitnehmt, wenn Gott sich eurer annimmt ´und euch aus Ägypten herausführt`.«26Josef starb im Alter von 110 Jahren. Sein Leichnam wurde einbalsamiert und in Ägypten in einen Sarg gelegt.
