En la isla de Malta

1 Cuando ya estábamos a salvo, nos enteramos de que la isla se llamaba Malta. 2 Los habitantes de la isla nos atendieron muy bien. Encendieron una fogata y nos invitaron a acercarnos, porque estaba lloviendo y hacía mucho frío. 3 Mientras Pablo recogía un montón de leña para echarla al fuego, una víbora que huía del calor se le prendió en la mano. 4 Los habitantes de la isla, al ver la víbora colgada de la mano de Pablo, se pusieron a decir entre ellos: «No cabe duda de que es un asesino. Pues aunque se salvó del mar, la justicia divina no lo deja vivir». 5 Pero Pablo sacudió la mano y la víbora cayó al fuego y a él no le pasó nada. 6 La gente esperaba que se hinchara o que cayera muerto en cualquier momento. Pero después de esperar mucho y de ver que no le pasaba nada, cambiaron de opinión y pensaron que era un dios. 7 Cerca del lugar donde estábamos había unos terrenos que le pertenecían a Publio, el funcionario principal de la isla. Este nos hospedó durante tres días en su casa y fue muy amable con nosotros. 8 El padre de Publio estaba en cama, enfermo con fiebre y disentería. Pablo fue a verlo, oró por él y después puso las manos sobre él y lo sanó. 9 Al enterarse de esto, los demás enfermos de la isla fueron a ver a Pablo para que los sanara, y él los sanó. 10 Nos atendieron muy bien y cuando llegó el momento de partir, nos dieron todo lo que necesitábamos para el viaje.

Llegada a Roma

11 Después de pasar tres meses en la isla, salimos en un barco que había pasado el invierno allí. Era un barco de Alejandría que tenía en la parte delantera la figura de los dioses Dióscuros. 12 Llegamos a Siracusa, donde pasamos tres días. 13 De allí, salimos bordeando la costa hasta llegar a Regio. Al día siguiente sopló el viento del sur y un día más tarde ya estábamos en Poteoli. 14 Allí encontramos a unos creyentes que nos invitaron a pasar una semana con ellos. Y finalmente, llegamos a Roma. 15 Los hermanos de Roma ya se habían enterado de nuestra llegada y salieron a recibirnos hasta el Foro de Apio y Tres Tabernas. Al verlos, Pablo le dio gracias a Dios y se animó. 16 Ya en Roma, a Pablo le permitieron que viviera aparte, aunque un soldado lo vigilaba.

17 Tres días después, Pablo reunió a los dirigentes judíos y les dijo: ―Hermanos, yo no he hecho nada contra mi pueblo ni contra las costumbres de nuestros antepasados. Sin embargo, me arrestaron en Jerusalén y me entregaron a los romanos. 18 Estos me hicieron muchas preguntas y luego quisieron soltarme, pues no me encontraron culpable de nada que mereciera la muerte. 19 »Pero cuando los judíos se opusieron, tuve que pedir que el emperador me juzgara. No es que tenga algo de qué acusar a mi nación. 20 Yo les he pedido que vengan para verlos y hablar con ustedes. Estoy preso porque tengo la misma esperanza que tiene el pueblo de Israel. 21 Ellos le respondieron: ―Nosotros no hemos recibido ninguna carta de Judea que hable de ti. Tampoco ha llegado ninguno de los hermanos de allá dando malos informes o hablando mal de ti. 22 Pero queremos que nos digas lo que piensas, porque lo único que sabemos es que en todas partes se habla en contra de esa secta. 23 Entonces pusieron una fecha para reunirse con Pablo, y llegaron muchos a la casa donde él vivía. Desde la mañana hasta la tarde él les estuvo hablando acerca del reino de Dios. Usó desde la ley de Moisés hasta los profetas para convencerlos acerca de Jesús. 24 Unos aceptaron lo que él decía, pero otros no. 25 Como no pudieron ponerse de acuerdo entre ellos, comenzaron a irse. Entonces Pablo finalmente les dijo: «El Espíritu Santo tenía razón cuando les habló a sus antepasados por medio del profeta Isaías y les dijo: 26 »“Ve a este pueblo y dile: ‘Por más que ustedes oigan, no entenderán; por más que ustedes miren, no verán’. 27 »”Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha endurecido; se le han tapado los oídos, y se le han cerrado los ojos. Si así no fuera, podrían ver con los ojos y oír con los oídos, entender con el corazón y volverse a mí para que yo los sane”. 28 »Quiero que sepan que esta salvación de Dios se ha enviado a los que no son judíos, y ellos sí escucharán». 30 Pablo se quedó dos años completos en la casa que había alquilado, y allí recibía a todos los que iban a verlo. 31 Sin temor alguno y sin que nadie se lo impidiera, anunciaba el reino de Dios y enseñaba acerca del Señor Jesucristo.

Paul on Malta

1 After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta. 2 The native people* showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. 3 When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. 4 When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice* has not allowed him to live.” 5 He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. 7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 8 It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him. 9 And when this had taken place, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured. 10 They also honored us greatly,* and when we were about to sail, they put on board whatever we needed.

Paul Arrives at Rome

11 After three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island, a ship of Alexandria, with the twin gods* as a figurehead. 12 Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days. 13 And from there we made a circuit and arrived at Rhegium. And after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli. 14 There we found brothers* and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome. 15 And the brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage. 16 And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.

17 After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. 19 But because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against my nation. 20 For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain.” 21 And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.” 23 When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. 24 And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. 25 And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 26 “‘Go to this people, and say, “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” 27 For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’ 28 Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”* 30 He lived there two whole years at his own expense,* and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.
