El concilio de Jerusalén

1 Llegaron varias personas de Judea a Antioquía y empezaron a enseñar a los hermanos que, a menos que se circuncidaran conforme a la ley de Moisés, no podrían ser salvos. 2 Como Pablo y Bernabé discutieron con ellos y se les opusieron con todas sus fuerzas, los creyentes los enviaron a Jerusalén, acompañados de varios creyentes, para que consultaran el asunto con los apóstoles y los ancianos. 3 Después que los envió la iglesia, a lo largo del camino fueron deteniéndose en las ciudades de Fenicia y Samaria para visitar a los creyentes y contarles cómo los gentiles también estaban convirtiéndose. Y esto llenó a todos de mucha alegría. 4 Al llegar a Jerusalén, fueron muy bien recibidos por la iglesia, los apóstoles y los ancianos. Pablo y Bernabé los pusieron al tanto de lo que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos. 5 Entonces algunos de los que antes de convertirse habían sido fariseos, afirmaron que era necesario circuncidar a los gentiles y exigirles que obedecieran la ley de Moisés. 6 En vista de esto, los apóstoles y los ancianos convocaron una reunión para tratar el asunto. 7 Después de muchas discusiones, Pedro se puso de pie y pidió la palabra: ―Hermanos, ustedes saben que Dios me escogió de entre ustedes hace mucho tiempo para que predicara las buenas noticias entre los gentiles, a fin de que estos pudieran creer. 8 Dios, que conoce los corazones humanos, nos demostró que aceptaba a los gentiles al otorgarles el Espíritu Santo de la misma forma en que nos lo había otorgado a nosotros. 9 Y no hizo ninguna distinción entre ellos y nosotros, porque les había limpiado sus corazones por medio de la fe. 10 ¿Nos atreveremos a provocar a Dios, poniendo sobre los gentiles un yugo que ni nosotros ni nuestros padres hemos podido llevar? 11 ¿No creen ustedes que los gentiles se salvan de la misma forma en que nos salvamos nosotros, es decir, por medio de la gracia del Señor Jesús? 12 Allí mismo terminaron las discusiones, y todo el mundo prestó atención a las palabras de Bernabé y de Pablo que relataban los milagros que Dios había realizado a través de ellos entre los gentiles. 13 Cuando Pablo y Bernabé terminaron, Jacobo pidió la palabra: ―Hermanos —les dijo—, escúchenme. 14 Ya Simón nos ha relatado cómo Dios visitó por primera vez a los gentiles para escoger de entre ellos un pueblo que honre su nombre. 15 Esto concuerda con lo que los profetas predijeron, como está escrito: 16 »“Después de esto regresaré y reedificaré la casa de David que quedó derrumbada, reconstruiré sus ruinas y la restauraré, 17 para que encuentren también al Señor los gentiles que llevan mi nombre. 18 Esto lo dijo el Señor, el que da a conocer el plan que tenía trazado desde el principio”. 19 »Por lo tanto, opino que no debemos ponerles trabas a los gentiles que se hayan convertido al Señor. 20 Pero mandémosles a decir por carta que se abstengan de comer las carnes sacrificadas a los ídolos, de los vicios sexuales y de comer carnes de animales sin desangrar o ahogados, 21 ya que estas son las cosas contra las cuales a través de los tiempos se ha estado predicando todos los sábados en las sinagogas judías de todas las ciudades».

Carta del concilio a los creyentes gentiles

22 Entonces los apóstoles, los ancianos y la congregación en pleno decidieron nombrar a personas que fueran con Pablo y Bernabé a Antioquía a dar a conocer la decisión. Escogieron a Judas (conocido también como Barsabás) y a Silas. Ambos tenían buen testimonio entre los hermanos. 23 Y llevaron con ellos la siguiente carta: Los apóstoles y los ancianos, a los hermanos gentiles de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia: ¡Saludos! 24 Hemos sabido que varios creyentes de Judea, sin la autorización nuestra, los han estado molestando y los han confundido con lo que les han dicho. 25 Nos ha parecido bien y hemos acordado unánimemente, que dos de nuestros hombres, Judas y Silas, acompañen a nuestros queridos hermanos Pablo y Bernabé 26 que han expuesto sus vidas por la causa de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 27 Judas y Silas confirmarán personalmente lo que les escribimos. 28 Nos ha parecido bien, al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros, no imponer sobre ustedes ninguna carga aparte de lo siguiente: 29 Sólo les pedimos que se abstengan de comer carnes ofrecidas a los ídolos, sangre, animales ahogados, y que, por supuesto, se aparten de los vicios sexuales. Bastará que se abstengan de estas cosas. Los saludamos con nuestros mejores deseos. 30 Los cuatro mensajeros partieron inmediatamente rumbo a Antioquía, donde convocaron a la congregación y le entregaron la carta. 31 Un júbilo desbordante llenó a los hermanos cuando leyeron tan alentador mensaje. 32 Luego Judas y Silas, que también eran profetas, predicaron extensos sermones con el propósito de fortalecer y animar a los creyentes. 33 Judas y Silas permanecieron varios días en Antioquía, al cabo de los cuales los despidieron para regresar a los que los habían enviado. 34 Pero Silas decidió quedarse. 35 Pablo y Bernabé se quedaron en Antioquía y junto con otros muchos predicaban y enseñaban la palabra del Señor.

Desacuerdo entre Pablo y Bernabé

36 Varios días más tarde, Pablo le propuso a Bernabé regresar a visitar las ciudades donde anteriormente habían predicado la palabra del Señor, a fin de ver cómo estaban los creyentes. 37 Bernabé quería que Juan Marcos fuera de nuevo con ellos; 38 pero a Pablo no le agradó la idea, porque Juan los había abandonado en Panfilia, y no había seguido con ellos en el trabajo. 39 El desacuerdo que surgió entre ellos fue tan grande que se separaron. Bernabé tomó entonces a Marcos y zarpó con él hacia Chipre, 40 mientras que Pablo escogió a Silas. Luego, los hermanos los encomendaron a la gracia del Señor, y Pablo partió hacia Siria y Cilicia para alentar a las iglesias.

The Jerusalem Council

1 But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. 3 So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers.* 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them. 5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” 6 The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. 7 And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, 9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” 12 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13 After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14 Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written, 16 “‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, 17 that the remnant* of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things 18 known from of old.’ 19 Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. 21 For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, 23 with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers* who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you* with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, 25 it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: 29 that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.” 30 So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. 32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words. 33 And after they had spent some time, they were sent off in peace by the brothers to those who had sent them.* 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Paul and Barnabas Separate

36 And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” 37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
