Kedorlaomers Rachezug nach dem Jordantal; sein Sieg im Tal Siddim

1 Es begab sich dann zur Zeit Amraphels, des Königs von Sinear, Ariochs, des Königs von Ellasar, Kedorlaomers, des Königs von Elam, und Thideals, des Königs von Gojim*: 2 die fingen Krieg an mit Bera, dem König von Sodom, und mit Birsa, dem König von Gomorrha, mit Sineab, dem König von Adma, mit Semheber, dem König von Zebojim, und mit dem König von Bela, das ist Zoar. 3 Alle diese kamen als Verbündete im Tale von Siddim zusammen, wo jetzt das Salzmeer liegt. 4 Zwölf Jahre lang waren sie dem Kedorlaomer untertan* gewesen, aber im dreizehnten Jahre waren sie von ihm abgefallen. 5 Im vierzehnten Jahre kamen dann Kedorlaomer und die mit ihm verbündeten Könige und schlugen die Rephaiter bei Astheroth-Karnajim und die Susiter bei Ham und die Emiter in der Ebene von Kirjathajim 6 und die Horiter auf ihrem Gebirge Seir bis nach El-Paran, das am Rand der Wüste* liegt. 7 Darauf kehrten sie um und kamen nach En-Mispat*, das ist Kades, und verwüsteten das ganze Gefilde der Amalekiter sowie auch das Gebiet der Amoriter, die in Hazazon-Thamar wohnten. 8 Da zogen der König von Sodom und die Könige von Gomorrha, von Adma, von Zebojim und von Bela – das ist Zoar – aus und stellten sich gegen sie zur Schlacht auf im Siddimtal, 9 nämlich gegen Kedorlaomer, den König von Elam, und Thideal, den König von Gojim, und Amraphel, den König von Sinear, und Arioch, den König von Ellasar: vier Könige gegen die fünf. 10 Das Siddimtal war aber voll von Gruben mit Erdharz*. Als nun der König von Sodom und der von Gomorrha in die Flucht geschlagen waren, gerieten sie da hinein, die Überlebenden* aber flohen ins Gebirge (Juda). 11 Da plünderten jene Sodom und Gomorrha ganz aus, raubten alle ihre Lebensmittel und zogen damit ab; 12 sie nahmen auch Lot, Abrams Brudersohn, der damals in Sodom wohnte, samt seinem Hab und Gut mit sich und zogen ab.

Abrams tatkräftiges und erfolgreiches Eingreifen

13 Da kam ein Flüchtling und meldete es Abram, dem Hebräer*; dieser wohnte damals unter* den Terebinthen des Amoriters Mamre, der ein Bruder Eskols und Aners, der Bundesgenossen Abrams, war. 14 Als nun Abram die Kunde erhielt, daß sein Brudersohn (Lot) gefangen weggeführt worden war, da bot er seine waffengeübten Leute, dreihundertundachtzehn Mann, die in seinem Hause geboren waren, zum Kampfe auf und eilte jenen nach bis Dan. 15 Hier teilte er seine Leute in mehrere Haufen, überfiel die Feinde zur Nachtzeit mit seinen Knechten, schlug sie und verfolgte sie bis Hoba, das nördlich von Damaskus liegt. 16 So brachte er die gesamte Habe zurück; auch seinen Brudersohn Lot und dessen Hab und Gut brachte er zurück, ebenso die Frauen und das Volk*.

Abrams Zusammentreffen mit dem Priesterfürsten Melchisedek von Salem

17 Als Abram nun von seinem Siege über Kedorlaomer und die mit ihm verbündeten Könige zurückkehrte, ging ihm der König von Sodom entgegen in das Tal Sawe, das ist das Königstal. 18 Melchisedek aber, der König von Salem, brachte Brot und Wein aus der Stadt heraus; er war aber ein Priester des höchsten Gottes. 19 Er segnete ihn dann mit den Worten: »Gesegnet seist du, Abram, vom höchsten Gott, dem Schöpfer des Himmels und der Erde, 20 und gepriesen sei der höchste Gott, der dir deine Feinde in die Hand geliefert hat!« Ihm gab (Abram) alsdann den Zehnten von allem (Hebr 7,2).

Abrams Edelmut gegen den König von Sodom

21 Da sagte der König von Sodom zu Abram: »Gib mir die (gefangenen) Leute und behalte die Habe für dich!« 22 Aber Abram antwortete dem König von Sodom: »Ich hebe meine Hand zum HERRN auf, zum höchsten Gott, dem Schöpfer des Himmels und der Erde (und schwöre): 23 Keinen Faden und keinen Schuhriemen, überhaupt nichts von deinem ganzen Eigentum will ich behalten! Du sollst nicht sagen können, du habest Abram reich gemacht. 24 Ich will nichts davon! Nur was die Knechte* verzehrt haben und den Beuteanteil, der den mit mir verbündeten Männern Aner, Eskol und Mamre zukommt: die sollen ihren Anteil nehmen!«

Abram saves Lot

1 Amraphel was the king of Babylon. Arioch was the king of Ellasar. Kedorlaomer was the king of Elam. And Tidal was the king of Goyim. 2 They went to war against five other kings. They were Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela. Bela was also called Zoar. 3 These five kings all gathered their armies together in the Valley of Siddim. It was also called the valley of the Dead Sea. 4 For 12 years Kedorlaomer had ruled over them. But in the 13th year they opposed him. 5 So in the 14th year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him went to war. They won the battle against the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim. They also won the battle against the Zuzites in Ham and the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim. 6 They did the same thing to the Horites in the hill country of Seir. They marched all the way to El Paran near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat. En Mishpat was also called Kadesh. They took over the whole territory of the Amalekites. They also won the battle against the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar. 8 Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboyim and Bela marched out. Bela was also called Zoar. They lined up their armies for battle in the Valley of Siddim. 9 They got ready to fight against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Babylonia, and Arioch king of Ellasar. There were four kings against five. 10 The Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah ran away from the battle. Some of their men fell into the pits, but the rest escaped to the hills. 11 The four kings took all the things that belonged to Sodom and Gomorrah. They also took all their food and then left. 12 They carried away Abram’s nephew Lot and the things he owned. Lot was living in Sodom at that time. 13 A man escaped and came to report everything to Abram. Abram was a Hebrew. He was living near the large trees of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre was a brother of Eshkol and Aner. All of them helped Abram. 14 Abram heard that Lot had been captured. So he called out his 318 trained men. All of them were sons of his servants. Abram and his men chased their enemies as far as Dan. 15 During the night Abram separated his men into groups. They attacked their enemies and drove them away. They chased them north of Damascus as far as Hobah. 16 Abram took back everything the kings had taken. He brought back his nephew Lot and the things Lot owned. He also brought back the women and the other people. 17 After Abram won the battle over Kedorlaomer and the kings who helped him, he returned home. The king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh. It was also called the King’s Valley. 18 Melchizedek was the king of Jerusalem. He brought out bread and wine. He was the priest of the Most High God. 19 He gave a blessing to Abram. He said, ‘May the Most High God bless Abram. May the Creator of heaven and earth bless him. 20 Give praise to the Most High God. He gave your enemies into your hand.’ Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything. 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, ‘Give me the people. Keep everything else for yourself.’ 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, ‘I have raised my hand to make a promise to the LORD. He is the Most High God. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. 23 I’ve said I will not accept anything that belongs to you. I will not take even a thread or the strap of a sandal. You will never be able to say, “I made Abram rich.” 24 I’ll accept only what my men have eaten and what belongs to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. These three men went with me. Let them have their share.’
