Gottes Befehl zum Aufbruch in das Land der Verheißung; Trauer des Volkes über Gottes Abkehr
1Hierauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ziehe nunmehr weiter, hinweg von hier, du und das Volk, das du aus dem Land Ägypten hergeführt hast, in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen habe mit den Worten: ›Deinen Nachkommen will ich es geben!‹2Ich will aber einen Engel vor dir hersenden und die Kanaanäer, Amoriter, Hethiter, Pherissiter, Hewiter und Jebusiter vertreiben, – in ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt.3Doch ich selbst will nicht in deiner Mitte hinaufziehen, weil du ein halsstarriges Volk bist; ich müßte dich sonst unterwegs vertilgen.«4Als das Volk diese schlimme Botschaft vernahm, wurde es betrübt, und keiner legte seinen Schmuck an;5denn der HERR hatte zu Mose gesagt: »Sage den Israeliten: ›Ihr seid ein halsstarriges Volk; wenn ich auch nur einen Augenblick in deiner Mitte einherzöge, müßte ich dich vertilgen. So lege denn jetzt deinen Schmuck von dir ab, dann will ich sehen, was ich für dich tun kann!‹«6Da legten die Israeliten ihren Schmuck ab, vom Berge Horeb an.
Die Stiftung und Verwendung des vor dem Lager befindlichen Offenbarungszeltes
7Mose aber nahm jedesmal das Zelt und schlug es für sich* außerhalb des Lagers in einiger Entfernung vom Lager auf und gab ihm den Namen ›Offenbarungszelt‹*. Sooft nun jemand den HERRN befragen wollte, ging er zu dem Offenbarungszelt hinaus, das außerhalb des Lagers lag.8Sooft aber Mose zu dem Zelt hinausging, standen alle Leute auf und traten ein jeder in den Eingang seines Zeltes und blickten hinter Mose her, bis er in das Zelt eingetreten war.9Sobald dann Mose in das Zelt getreten war, senkte sich die Wolkensäule herab und nahm ihren Stand am Eingang des Zeltes, solange der HERR mit Mose redete.10Wenn nun das ganze Volk die Wolkensäule am Eingang des Zeltes stehen sah, erhob sich das ganze Volk, und jeder warf sich im Eingang seines Zeltes nieder.11Der HERR aber redete mit Mose von Angesicht zu Angesicht, wie jemand mit seinem Freunde redet. Mose kehrte dann wieder ins Lager zurück, während sein Diener Josua, der Sohn Nuns, ein junger Mann, das Innere des Zeltes nie verließ.
Weitere Verhandlungen Moses mit Gott über die fernere göttliche Leitung des Volkes
12Hierauf sagte Mose zum HERRN: »Siehe, du hast mir wohl geboten, dieses Volk (nach Kanaan) hinaufzuführen, hast mich aber nicht wissen lassen, wen du mit mir senden willst; und doch hast du zu mir gesagt: ›Ich kenne dich mit Namen, und du hast auch Gnade bei mir gefunden!‹13Wenn ich denn wirklich Gnade bei dir gefunden habe, so laß mich doch deine Pläne wissen, damit ich dich erkenne und damit ich (inne werde, daß ich) Gnade bei dir gefunden habe! Bedenke doch auch, daß dies Volk dein Volk ist!«14Da antwortete der HERR: »Wenn ich in Person mitzöge, würde ich dir dadurch Beruhigung verschaffen?«15Da entgegnete ihm Mose: »Wenn du nicht in Person mitziehst, so laß uns lieber nicht von hier wegziehen!16Woran soll man denn sonst erkennen, daß ich samt deinem Volk Gnade bei dir gefunden habe? Doch eben daran, daß du mit uns ziehst und daß wir, ich und dein Volk, dadurch vor allen Völkern auf dem Erdboden ausgezeichnet werden.«17Da antwortete der HERR dem Mose: »Auch diese Bitte, die du jetzt ausgesprochen, will ich dir erfüllen; denn du hast Gnade bei mir gefunden, und ich kenne dich mit Namen.«
Gott verspricht Mose das Schauen seiner Herrlichkeit als Gnadenbeweis
18Als Mose nun bat: »Laß mich doch deine Herrlichkeit schauen!«,19antwortete der HERR: »Ich will all meine Schöne vor deinen Augen vorüberziehen lassen und will den Namen des HERRN laut vor dir ausrufen, nämlich daß ich Gnade erweise, wem ich eben gnädig bin, und Barmherzigkeit dem erzeige, dessen ich mich erbarmen will.«20Dann fuhr er fort: »Mein Angesicht kannst du nicht schauen; denn kein Mensch, der mich schaut, bleibt am Leben.«21Doch der HERR fuhr fort: »Siehe, es ist ein Platz neben mir*: da magst du dich auf den Felsen stellen!22Wenn ich dann in meiner Herrlichkeit vorüberziehe, will ich dich in die Höhlung des Felsens stellen und meine Hand schirmend über dich halten, bis ich vorübergezogen bin.23Habe ich dann meine Hand zurückgezogen, so wirst du meine Rückseite schauen; mein Angesicht aber kann nicht geschaut werden.«

The Command to Leave Sinai
1The Lord said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’2I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.3Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”4When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.5For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’”6Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
The Tent of Meeting
7Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.8Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent.9When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord* would speak with Moses.10And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.11Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Moses’ Intercession
12Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.”14And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”15And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.16For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”17And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”18Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”19And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”21And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.23Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
