1 Nach diesen Begebenheiten meldete man dem Joseph: »Wisse, dein Vater ist erkrankt«; da nahm er seine beiden Söhne Manasse und Ephraim mit sich.

2 Als man nun dem Jakob mitteilte: »Dein Sohn Joseph kommt zu dir«, da machte Israel sich stark, setzte sich im Bett aufrecht hin

3 und sagte dann zu Joseph: »Der allmächtige Gott ist mir einst zu Lus* im Lande Kanaan erschienen und hat mich gesegnet

4 mit den Worten: ›Ich will dich fruchtbar machen und mehren und dich zu einer Menge* von Stämmen werden lassen und will dieses Land deiner Nachkommenschaft nach dir zu ewigem Besitz geben.‹

5 Und nun sollen deine beiden Söhne, die dir im Lande Ägypten geboren worden sind, ehe ich zu dir nach Ägypten kam, mir gehören: Ephraim und Manasse sollen mir gehören wie Ruben und Simeon.

6 Deine übrigen Kinder aber, die dir nach ihnen geboren sind, sollen dir gehören: den Namen (eines) ihrer (beiden) Brüder sollen sie in ihrem* Erbteil führen.

7 Was mich aber betrifft: als ich aus Mesopotamien heimkehrte, starb mir Rahel unterwegs im Lande Kanaan, als nur noch eine Strecke Weges bis Ephrath zu gehen war, und ich begrub sie dort am Wege nach Ephrath [das ist Bethlehem].«

8 Als nun Israel die Söhne Josephs sah, fragte er: »Wer sind diese?«

9 Joseph antwortete seinem Vater: »Es sind meine Söhne, die Gott mir hier geschenkt hat.« Da sagte er: »Bringe sie her zu mir, damit ich sie segne!«

10 Israels Augen waren nämlich infolge des Alters schwach geworden, so daß er nicht (mehr) sehen konnte. Als er sie nun dicht an ihn herangebracht hatte, küßte und umarmte er sie.

11 Hierauf sagte Israel zu Joseph: »Ich hatte nicht gehofft, dein Angesicht je wiederzusehen; und nun hat Gott mich sogar noch Kinder von dir sehen lassen!«

12 Darauf zog Joseph sie wieder von seinen* Knien weg und verneigte sich vor ihm bis zur Erde.

13 Dann nahm Joseph sie beide, Ephraim mit seiner rechten Hand auf der linken Seite Israels und Manasse mit seiner linken Hand auf der rechten Seite Israels, und ließ sie so an ihn herantreten.

14 Da streckte Israel seine rechte Hand aus und legte sie auf das Haupt Ephraims, obgleich er der jüngere war, und seine linke Hand auf das Haupt Manasses, indem er seine Arme übers Kreuz legte; denn Manasse war der Erstgeborene.

15 Dann segnete er Joseph mit den Worten: »Der Gott, vor dessen Angesicht meine Väter Abraham und Isaak gewandelt sind, der Gott, der mein Hirt gewesen ist, seitdem ich lebe, bis auf diesen Tag,

16 der Engel, der mich aus allem Unglück errettet hat: er segne diese Knaben, daß durch sie mein Name und der Name meiner Väter Abraham und Isaak fortlebt und sie sich zu einer großen Menge auf Erden* vermehren!«

17 Als nun Joseph sah, daß sein Vater seine rechte Hand andauernd auf das Haupt Ephraims legte, mißfiel ihm dies; er faßte daher die Hand seines Vaters, um sie vom Haupt Ephraims auf das Haupt Manasses zu legen,

18 indem er dabei zu seinem Vater sagte: »Nicht so, lieber Vater, denn dieser ist der Erstgeborene; lege deine rechte Hand auf sein Haupt!«

19 Aber sein Vater wollte nicht und sagte: »Ich weiß es wohl, mein Sohn, ich weiß es! Auch dieser wird zu einem Volk* werden, und auch er wird groß werden; jedoch sein jüngerer Bruder wird größer sein als er, und seine Nachkommen werden zu einer Menge von Völkern werden.«

20 So segnete er sie denn an jenem Tage mit den Worten: »Mit deinem Namen werden die Israeliten einen Segenswunsch aussprechen, indem sie sagen: ›Gott mache dich gleich Ephraim und gleich Manasse!‹« Damit stellte er Ephraim vor* Manasse.

21 Hierauf sagte Israel zu Joseph: »Ich werde nun sterben; aber Gott wird mit euch sein und euch in das Land eurer Väter zurückkehren lassen.

22 Ich aber gebe dir einen Landstrich, den du vor deinen Brüdern voraushaben sollst; ich habe ihn den Amoritern einst mit meinem Schwert und meinem Bogen abgenommen.«

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

1 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

2 And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed.

3 And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty* appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,

4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’

5 And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.

6 And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.

7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance* to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

8 When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?”

9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.”

10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.

11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.”

12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him.

14 And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn).

15 And he blessed Joseph and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,

16 the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys; and in them let my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude* in the midst of the earth.”

17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.

18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.”

19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude* of nations.”

20 So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’” Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers.

22 Moreover, I have given to you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope* that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.”
