De Israëlieten in Kanaän

1 Nadat Jozua was gestorven, vroegen de Israëlieten aan de HERE: ‘Welke stam moet beginnen met de bestrijding van de Kanaänieten?’ 2 De HERE antwoordde: ‘De stam Juda. Ik zal hun een grote overwinning geven.’ 3 De leiders van Juda riepen daarna de hulp in van de stam Simeon en zeiden: ‘Ga met ons mee als we de Kanaänieten verdrijven uit het ons toegewezen gebied. Dan zullen wij jullie helpen om jullie gebied te veroveren.’ Toen sloot het leger van Simeon zich bij dat van Juda aan. 4 Met de hulp van de HERE konden zij de Kanaänieten en de Perizzieten verslaan. Daarbij sneuvelden bij Bezek tienduizend man van de vijand. 5 Koning Adonibezek vluchtte, maar na een korte achtervolging kregen de Israëlieten hem te pakken en hakten zij zijn duimen en grote tenen af. 7 ‘Ik heb met wel zeventig koningen hetzelfde gedaan en ik liet ze leven van het eten dat van mijn tafel viel,’ zei koning Adonibezek. ‘Maar nu laat God mij voor mijn eigen daden boeten!’ Als gevangene werd hij naar Jeruzalem gebracht, waar hij stierf. 8 De mannen van Juda veroverden ook Jeruzalem, 9 brachten alle inwoners om en staken de stad in brand. Daarna vochten zij tegen de Kanaänieten, die in de bergen, in de Negev-woestijn en in het laagland bij de zee woonden. 10 Zij rukten op tegen de Kanaänieten in Hebron (dat vroeger Kirjat-Arba heette) en versloegen Sesai, Achiman en Talmai. 11 Vervolgens vielen ze de stad Debir aan, die vroeger Kirjat-Sefer heette. 12 Legeraanvoerder Kaleb daagde zijn mannen uit: ‘Wie wil de leiding op zich nemen van de aanval op Kirjat-Sefer? Wie de stad verovert, mag met mijn dochter Achsa trouwen.’ 13 Kalebs neef Otniël, de zoon van zijn jongere broer Kenaz, bood zich aan, hij veroverde de stad en Achsa werd zijn vrouw. 14 Zodra zij bij hem kwam, haalde ze hem over van haar vader nog een stuk bouwland te vragen. Ze stapte van haar ezel af om er met haar vader over te spreken. ‘Wat kan ik voor je doen?’ vroeg Kaleb. 15 Zij antwoordde: ‘U hebt mij als huwelijksgeschenk een dor stuk land gegeven, maar geef mij er alstublieft ook waterbronnen bij.’ Toen gaf Kaleb haar de hooggelegen en de laaggelegen bronnen. 16 De mannen van Juda namen het nieuwe gebied in de woestijn van Juda ten zuiden van de stad Arad in bezit. Zij werden vergezeld door de nakomelingen van Mozesʼ schoonvader, leden van de stam van de Kenieten. Deze verlieten hun woonplaats Jericho (De Stad van de Palmbomen) en vanaf die tijd woonden de twee stammen bij elkaar. 17 Daarna versterkte het leger van Juda dat van Simeon en samen versloegen zij de Kanaänieten uit de stad Sefat en brachten alle inwoners om. Daarom wordt de stad nu Chorma genoemd, dit betekent Slachting. 18 Het leger van Juda nam ook de steden Gaza, Askelon en Ekron in, met de omringende dorpen. 19 De HERE hielp de mannen van Juda het bergland te veroveren, maar zij slaagden er niet in de mensen van de laagvlakte te verdrijven, want die beschikten over ijzeren strijdwagens. 20 De stad Hebron was voor Kaleb, zoals Mozes had gezegd, want Kaleb had de drie zonen van Enak eruit verdreven. 21 De Benjaminieten slaagden er niet in de Jebusieten uit Jeruzalem te verdrijven, zodat die nog steeds tussen de Benjaminieten wonen. 22 Wat de familie van Jozef betreft, die viel de stad Betel aan, die vroeger Luz heette. En de HERE hielp hen. 24 Eerst stuurden zij verkenners vooruit. Die zagen een man uit de stad komen en zeiden tegen hem: ‘Als u ons wijst hoe wij in de stad kunnen komen, zullen wij uw leven sparen.’ 25 Toen wees hij hun hoe ze de stad binnen konden komen en ze roeiden de hele bevolking uit. Maar die man en zijn familie lieten zij ongemoeid. 26 Die reisde daarna naar het gebied van de Hethieten en stichtte daar een nieuwe stad, die hij Luz noemde. Zo heet de stad nu nog. 27 De stam Manasse kon de bewoners van de steden Bet-San, Taänach, Dor, Jibleam en Megiddo en de omliggende dorpen niet verdrijven. Daardoor konden de Kanaänieten zich in die streek handhaven. 28 Toen de Israëlieten later een sterk volk waren geworden, dwongen zij de Kanaänieten wel als slaven voor hen te werken, maar verdreven hen niet uit het land. 29 Dit gold ook voor de Kanaänieten uit de stad Gezer, de mannen van Efraïm konden hen niet verdrijven, zodat de twee volken bij elkaar bleven wonen. 30 Ook de stam Zebulon lukte het niet de Kanaänieten uit de steden Kitron en Nahalol te verdrijven, hoewel zij hen naderhand wel tot slaven maakten. 31 Hetzelfde was het geval met de stam Aser: de inwoners van Akko, Sidon, Achlab, Achzib, Chelba, Afek en Rechob bleven in hun steden wonen. 32 Zodoende leefden de Aserieten en de oorspronkelijke bevolking van Kanaän bij elkaar. 33 De stam Naftali kon de Kanaänieten niet uit de steden Bet-Semes en Bet-Anat verdrijven. Deze twee volken woonden dus ook bij elkaar, hoewel ook deze Kanaänieten werden gedwongen tot slavernij. 34 En wat de mensen van Dan betreft, de Amorieten drongen hen terug naar de bergen en stonden hun niet toe naar de vlakte af te dalen. 35 De Amorieten wisten zich ook te handhaven in de steden Har-Cheres, Ajjalon en Saälbim, maar de nakomelingen van Jozef onderwierpen hen en maakten hen tot slaven. 36 Het gebied van de Amorieten strekte zich uit van de Schorpioenenpas tot Sela en nog verder.

The Continuing Conquest of Canaan

1 After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the Lord, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” 2 The Lord said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.” 3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him. 4 Then Judah went up and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek. 5 They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. 7 And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. 8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. 9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. 11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. 12 And Caleb said, “He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.” 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife. 14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. 16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah.* 18 Judah also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19 And the Lord was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron. 20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. 22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. 23 And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) 24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.” 25 And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.

Failure to Complete the Conquest

27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely. 29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them. 30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor. 31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out. 33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them. 34 The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
