De verdeling van het land

1 Toen Jozua oud was geworden, sprak God hem daarover aan en Hij wees hem erop dat nog heel veel gebieden in bezit moesten worden genomen: 2 het hele land van de Filistijnen; het land van de Gesurieten; het gebied van de Kanaänieten, dat zich uitstrekte van de Beek van Egypte tot de zuidelijke grens van Ekron; de vijf Filistijnse steden Gaza, Asdod, Askelon, Gat en Ekron. 4 Daarbij komt nog het land van de Awwieten in het zuiden; in het noorden al het land van de Kanaänieten; Ara (dat aan de Sidoniërs behoort), dat zich noordwaarts uitstrekt tot Afek aan de grens van de Amorieten; 5 het land van de Giblieten en het hele gebied van de Libanon in het oosten, van Baäl-Gad aan de voet van de berg Hermon tot aan de toegangsweg naar Hamat; 6 het gehele heuvelgebied van de Libanon tot aan de plaats Brandend Water, inclusief het hele gebied van de Sidoniërs. ‘Ik zal de inwoners van deze gebieden voor het volk Israël het land uit jagen, 7 dus reken dit hele gebied mee wanneer u het land gaat verdelen onder de negen stammen en de halve stam van Manasse, zoals Ik u heb bevolen,’ zei de HERE. 8 De andere helft van de stam van Manasse en de stammen van Ruben en Gad hadden hun gebied al ontvangen ten oosten van de Jordaan, want Mozes had dit gebied vóór die tijd al aan hen toegewezen. 9 Hun gebied omvatte Aroër, dat aan de rivier de Arnon ligt, halverwege het dal en de hele hoogvlakte van Medeba tot Dibon. 10 Ook alle steden van koning Sichon van de Amorieten, die vanuit Chesbon regeerde, tot aan de grenzen van Ammon hoorden daarbij. 11 Ook Gilead, het gebied van de Gesurieten en de Maächatieten, de hele berg Hermon, Basan tot de stad Salka 12 en het hele gebied van koning Og van Basan, die had geregeerd vanuit Astarot en Edreï, hoorden erbij. Koning Og was een van de laatste overlevenden van de Refaïeten, het volk van de reuzen die Mozes had aangevallen en verslagen. 13 Het volk Israël had de Gesurieten en de Maächatieten niet verdreven, zodat zij tot op de dag van vandaag te midden van de Israëlieten wonen. 14 De stam van Levi kreeg van Mozes geen land toegewezen. In plaats daarvan kregen zij de offers die aan de HERE werden gebracht, zoals Hij Mozes had beloofd. 15 Rekening houdend met het aantal gezinnen had Mozes de stam van Ruben het gebied toegewezen van Aroër, aan de rivier de Arnon, midden in het dal, en de hele hoogvlakte van Medeba. 17 Het omvatte Chesbon en de andere steden op de vlakte: Dibon, Bamot-Baäl, Bet-Baäl-Meon, 18 Jahas, Kedemot, Mefaät, 19 Kirjataïm, Sibma, Seret-Hassachar op de berg boven het dal, 20 Bet-Peor, de hellingen van de berg Pisga en Bet-Hajjesimot. 21 Het stamgebied van Ruben omvatte ook de steden op de hoogvlakte en het koninkrijk van Sichon. Koning Sichon had in Chesbon geregeerd en was samen met de andere machtige leiders van Midjan—Ewi, Rekem, Sur, Chur en Reba—door Mozes gedood. 22 Het volk Israël doodde ook de waarzegger Bileam, de zoon van Beor. 23 De Jordaan vormde de westgrens van de stam van Ruben. 24 Mozes had ook aan de stam van Gad land toegewezen, in verhouding tot de grootte van die stam. 25 Dit gebied omvatte Jazer, alle steden van Gilead en de helft van het land van Ammon tot aan Aroër bij Rabba. 26 Verder strekte het zich uit van Chesbon tot Ramat-Hammispe en Bet-Onim en van Machanaïm tot Lidber. 27 In de vallei lagen Bet-Haram, Bet-Nimra, Sukkot, Safon en de rest van het rijk van koning Sichon van Chesbon. De Jordaan vormde de westelijke grens, lopend tot het Meer van Galilea, vandaar boog de grens in oostelijke richting van de Jordaan af. 29 Mozes had het volgende gebied toegewezen aan de helft van de stam van Manasse, ook weer in verhouding tot het aantal stamleden. 30 Hun gebied strekte zich vanaf Machanaïm in noordelijke richting uit, omvatte heel Basan, het vroegere rijk van koning Og en de zestig dorpen van Jaïr in Basan. 31 De helft van Gilead en de koninklijke steden Astarot en Edreï, die aan koning Og hadden toebehoord, werden gegeven aan de helft van de familie van Machir, een zoon van Manasse. 32 Zo had Mozes het land ten oosten van de Jordaan verdeeld, waar het volk in die tijd het kamp tegenover Jericho had opgeslagen. 33 Maar Mozes had de stam van Levi geen land gegeven omdat, zo had hij hun verteld, de HERE, de God van Israël, Zelf hun erfdeel was.

Land Still to Be Conquered

1 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. 2 This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites 3 (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, 4 in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, 5 and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath, 6 all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. 7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

8 With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh* the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: 9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. 14 To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him. 15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages. 24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,* 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages. 29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans. 32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.
