1Absalom schafte zich daarna een prachtig rijtuig met uitstekende paarden aan. Hij nam bovendien vijftig man voetvolk in dienst die voor hem uit moesten lopen.2Elke morgen stond hij vroeg op en ging naar de stadspoort. Als dan iemand kwam om een probleem aan de koning voor te leggen, riep Absalom hem bij zich en vroeg hem onder andere waar hij vandaan kwam.3Absalom zei dan: ‘Ik merk gewoon dat u in deze zaak het recht aan uw kant hebt. Het is jammer dat de koning niemand heeft die hem kan helpen bij het beoordelen van dit soort zaken.4Ik wilde dat ik rechter was, dan zou ik iedereen die met een zaak bij mij kwam, zijn recht geven!’5Als iemand voor hem wilde buigen, liet hij dat niet toe, maar trok hem overeind en begroette hem vriendschappelijk.6Zo wist Absalom de harten van vele Israëlieten te winnen.7Na vier jaar zei Absalom tegen de koning: ‘Mag ik naar Hebron gaan? Ik wil de HERE een offer brengen als inlossing van een eed die ik Hem zwoer toen ik nog in Gesur was. Ik heb God toen gezworen dat als Hij mij terug liet gaan naar Jeruzalem, ik Hem een offer zou brengen.’9De koning zag geen reden dat verzoek te weigeren. Zo reisde Absalom naar Hebron.10Maar terwijl hij daar was, stuurde hij spionnen naar alle delen van Israël om de mensen aan te sporen tot een opstand tegen de koning. ‘Zodra u de bazuinen hoort,’ luidde hun boodschap, ‘zult u weten dat Absalom in Hebron tot koning is gekroond.’11Hij nam tweehonderd mannen uit Jeruzalem mee als gasten voor het offerfeest, maar zij wisten niets van zijn plannen.12Terwijl hij het offer bracht, ontbood hij Achitofel, de raadsman van David, die uit de stad Gilo kwam. Deze Achitofel schaarde zich aan Absaloms zijde, evenals vele anderen. Zo groeide de samenzwering uit tot een machtig complot.13Een boodschapper bracht echter deze berichten aan koning David over: ‘Heel Israël heeft zich bij Absalom gevoegd in een samenzwering tegen u.’14‘Dan moeten wij onmiddellijk vluchten, anders is het te laat!’ was Davids reactie. ‘Als wij de stad uit zijn voordat hij er is, zullen zowel wij als de stad Jeruzalem van de dood worden gered.’15‘Wij staan volledig achter u,’ antwoordden zijn naaste medewerkers.16Zo maakten David en zijn hele familie zich klaar voor een snel vertrek. Alleen tien van zijn bijvrouwen bleven achter om de zaken in het paleis te regelen.17Bij een huis buiten de stad liet David zijn troepen aan zich voorbijtrekken, daarbij waren ook zeshonderd mannen die uit Gat waren gekomen en de Keretieten en Peletieten.19Plotseling wendde de koning zich tot Ittai, de bevelhebber van de zeshonderd Gatieten, en zei: ‘Wat doet u hier? Ga met uw mannen terug en wacht rustig af tot duidelijk is wie uw koning zal zijn. U bent immers alleen te gast hier in Israël. U bent gisteren pas aangekomen, dus waarom zou ik u vandaag dwingen met ons mee te trekken, wie weet waarheen? Ga terug en neem uw troepen mee. Moge de HERE u genadig zijn.’21Maar Ittai antwoordde: ‘Ik zweer bij God en bij uw eigen leven dat ik zal gaan waar u gaat, wat er ook mag gebeuren, of dat nu dood of leven betekent.’22‘Goed, ga dan maar met ons mee,’ zei David. Daarop trokken Ittai en zijn zeshonderd mannen met hun familieleden verder mee.23Er heerste een verdrietige stemming, toen de koning met zijn laatste volgelingen wegtrok en de beek Kedron overstak in de richting van de woestijn.24Abjatar, Sadok en de Levieten zetten de ark van het verbond van God langs de weg neer, tot iedereen uit de stad was voorbijgetrokken.25Op aanwijzing van David nam Sadok de ark daarna weer mee terug naar de stad. ‘Als de HERE genadig voor mij is,’ had David gezegd, ‘dan zal Hij mij laten terugkomen om de ark in de tent weer te zien. Maar als Hij genoeg van mij heeft, welnu, laat Hij dan doen wat Hij denkt dat het beste is.’27Daarna zei de koning tegen Sadok: ‘U vervult de rol van profeet. Ga stilletjes terug naar de stad met uw zoon Achimaäs en Abjatars zoon Jonatan.28Ik zal bij de doorwaadbare plaats in de Jordaan halthouden en daar op een boodschap van u wachten. Laat mij weten wat in Jeruzalem gebeurt, voordat ik de woestijn in trek.’29Daarop droegen Sadok en Abjatar de ark van God terug naar de stad en bleven daar.30Huilend volgde David de weg die omhoogvoerde naar de Olijfberg. Zijn hoofd was bedekt en hij liep op blote voeten als teken van rouw. Ook de mensen die bij hem waren, bedekten hun hoofden en huilden terwijl zij de berg beklommen.31Toen iemand David vertelde dat zijn raadsman Achitofel de kant van Absalom had gekozen, bad David: ‘Och HERE, zorgt U er alstublieft voor dat Achitofel Absalom slechte raad geeft!’32Toen zij op de Olijfberg de plaats bereikten waar de mensen gewoonlijk God aanbaden, trof David daar de Arkiet Chusai aan. Zijn kleren waren gescheurd en hij had aarde op zijn hoofd.33Maar David zei tegen hem: ‘Als u met mij meegaat, zult u ons alleen maar tot last zijn, ga terug naar Jeruzalem en zeg tegen Absalom: “Ik zal uw dienaar zijn, net zoals ik dat van uw vader was.” Op die manier kunt u de adviezen van Achitofel doorkruisen en tenietdoen.35De priesters Sadok en Abjatar zijn daar ook. Geef hun alles door wat in het paleis wordt verteld. Hun zonen Achimaäs en Jonatan kunnen mij dan opzoeken en doorgeven wat er allemaal gebeurt.’37Zo ging Davids vriend Chusai terug naar Jeruzalem en arriveerde daar tegelijk met Absalom.

Absalom’s Conspiracy
1After this Absalom got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.2And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,”3Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.”4Then Absalom would say, “Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.”5And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him.6Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.7And at the end of four* years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron.8For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to* the Lord.’”9The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.10But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’”11With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing.12And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for* Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.

13And a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.”14Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”15And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.”16So the king went out, and all his household after him. And the king left ten concubines to keep the house.17And the king went out, and all the people after him. And they halted at the last house.18And all his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath, passed on before the king.19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home.20You came only yesterday, and shall I today make you wander about with us, since I go I know not where? Go back and take your brothers with you, and may the Lord show* steadfast love and faithfulness to you.”21But Ittai answered the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be.”22And David said to Ittai, “Go then, pass on.” So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.23And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed the brook Kidron, and all the people passed on toward the wilderness.24And Abiathar came up, and behold, Zadok came also with all the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God until the people had all passed out of the city.25Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me back and let me see both it and his dwelling place.26But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.”27The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? Go back* to the city in peace, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.28See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”29So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there.30But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went.31And it was told David, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”32While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn and dirt on his head.33David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.34But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,’ then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.35Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.36Behold, their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son, and by them you shall send to me everything you hear.”37So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.
