1 Isaak rief Jakob, segnete ihn und befahl ihm: Nimm keine Kanaaniterin zur Frau! 2 Mach dich auf, geh nach Paddan-Aram, zum Haus Betuëls, des Vaters deiner Mutter! Hol dir von dort eine Frau, eine von den Töchtern Labans, des Bruders deiner Mutter! 3 El-Schaddai wird dich segnen, er wird dich fruchtbar machen und vermehren: Zu einer Schar von Völkern wirst du werden. 4 Er wird dir den Segen Abrahams geben, dir und deinen Nachkommen bei dir, damit du das Land in Besitz nimmst, in dem du als Fremder lebst, das aber Gott Abraham gegeben hat. 5 Isaak entließ Jakob und er zog nach Paddan-Aram zu Laban, dem Sohn des Aramäers Betuël, dem Bruder Rebekkas, der Mutter Jakobs und Esaus. 6 Esau sah, dass Isaak Jakob segnete und nach Paddan-Aram schickte, damit er sich von dort eine Frau holt. Als er ihn segnete, gebot er ihm: Du sollst dir keine Kanaaniterin zur Frau nehmen! 7 Jakob hörte auf seinen Vater und seine Mutter und ging nach Paddan-Aram. 8 Als Esau sah, dass die Kanaaniterinnen seinem Vater Isaak nicht gefielen, 9 ging Esau zu Ismael und nahm zu seinen Frauen noch Mahalat als Frau hinzu, die Schwester Nebajots, die Tochter Ismaels, des Sohnes Abrahams.

Jakob in Bet-El

10 Jakob zog aus Beerscheba weg und ging nach Haran. 11 Er kam an einen bestimmten Ort und übernachtete dort, denn die Sonne war untergegangen. Er nahm einen von den Steinen dieses Ortes, legte ihn unter seinen Kopf und schlief dort ein. 12 Da hatte er einen Traum: Siehe, eine Treppe stand auf der Erde, ihre Spitze reichte bis zum Himmel. Und siehe: Auf ihr stiegen Engel Gottes auf und nieder. 13 Und siehe, der HERR stand vor ihm und sprach: Ich bin der HERR, der Gott deines Vaters Abraham und der Gott Isaaks. Das Land, auf dem du liegst, will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen geben. 14 Deine Nachkommen werden zahlreich sein wie der Staub auf der Erde. Du wirst dich nach Westen und Osten, nach Norden und Süden ausbreiten und durch dich und deine Nachkommen werden alle Sippen der Erde Segen erlangen. 15 Siehe, ich bin mit dir, ich behüte dich, wohin du auch gehst, und bringe dich zurück in dieses Land. Denn ich verlasse dich nicht, bis ich vollbringe, was ich dir versprochen habe. 16 Jakob erwachte aus seinem Schlaf und sagte: Wirklich, der HERR ist an diesem Ort und ich wusste es nicht. 17 Er fürchtete sich und sagte: Wie Ehrfurcht gebietend ist doch dieser Ort! Er ist nichts anderes als das Haus Gottes und das Tor des Himmels. 18 Jakob stand früh am Morgen auf, nahm den Stein, den er unter seinen Kopf gelegt hatte, stellte ihn als Steinmal auf und goss Öl darauf. 19 Dann gab er dem Ort den Namen Bet-El - Haus Gottes -. Früher hieß die Stadt Lus. 20 Jakob machte das Gelübde: Wenn Gott mit mir ist und mich auf diesem Weg, den ich gehe, behütet, wenn er mir Brot zum Essen und Kleider zum Anziehen gibt, 21 wenn ich wohlbehalten heimkehre in das Haus meines Vaters, dann wird der HERR für mich Gott sein 22 und dieser Stein, den ich als Steinmal aufgestellt habe, soll ein Gotteshaus werden. Von allem, was du mir gibst, will ich dir gewiss den zehnten Teil geben.

1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him, ‘Don’t get married to a Canaanite woman. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram. Go to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Find a wife for yourself there. Take her from among the daughters of your mother’s brother Laban. 3 May the Mighty God bless you. May he give you children. May he make your family larger until you become a community of nations. 4 May he give you and your children after you the blessing he gave to Abraham. Then you can take over the land where you now live as an outsider. It’s the land God gave to Abraham.’ 5 Isaac sent Jacob on his way. Jacob went to Paddan Aram. He went to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean. Laban was Rebekah’s brother. And Rebekah was the mother of Jacob and Esau. 6 Esau found out that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram. Isaac wanted him to get a wife from there. Esau heard that when Isaac blessed Jacob, he commanded him, ‘Don’t get married to a woman from Canaan.’ 7 Esau also learned that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. 8 Then Esau realised how much his father Isaac disliked Canaanite women. 9 So he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath. She was the sister of Nebaioth and the daughter of Abraham’s son Ishmael. Esau added her to the wives he already had.

Jacob has a dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beersheba and started out for Harran. 11 He reached a certain place and stopped for the night. The sun had already set. He took one of the stones there and placed it under his head. Then he lay down to sleep. 12 In a dream he saw a stairway standing on the earth. Its top reached to heaven. The angels of God were going up and coming down on it. 13 The LORD stood beside the stairway. He said, ‘I am the LORD. I am the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your children after you the land you are lying on. 14 They will be like the dust of the earth that can’t be counted. They will spread out to the west and to the east. They will spread out to the north and to the south. All nations on earth will be blessed because of you and your children after you. 15 I am with you. I will watch over you everywhere you go. And I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ 16 Jacob woke up from his sleep. Then he thought, ‘The LORD is surely in this place. And I didn’t even know it.’ 17 Jacob was afraid. He said, ‘How holy this place is! This must be the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.’ 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head. He set it up as a sacred stone. And he poured olive oil on top of it. 19 He named that place Bethel. But the city used to be called Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a promise. He said, ‘May God be with me. May he watch over me on this journey I’m taking. May he give me food to eat and clothes to wear. 21 May he do as he has promised so that I can return safely to my father’s home. Then you, LORD, will be my God. 22 This stone I’ve set up as a sacred stone will be God’s house. And I’ll give you a tenth of everything you give me.’
