1Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.2But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.3King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please pray for us to the Lord our God.”4Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.5The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.6Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet:7“Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land.8And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire.9Thus says the Lord, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away.10For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
11Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh’s army,12Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people.13When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.”14And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.15And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.16When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days,17King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”18Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison?19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’?20Now hear, please, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.”21So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

1Sédécias, fils de Josias, devint roi à la place de Jéconia, le fils de Jojakim, car il avait été désigné par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, pour régner sur le pays de Juda.2Ni lui, ni ses serviteurs, ni la population du pays ne tinrent compte des paroles que l'Eternel avait dites par l'intermédiaire du prophète Jérémie.3Le roi Sédécias envoya Jucal, fils de Shélémia, et le prêtre Sophonie, fils de Maaséja, vers le prophète Jérémie pour lui dire: «Intercède donc en notre faveur auprès de l'Eternel, notre Dieu!»4Or Jérémie circulait librement parmi le peuple, on ne l'avait pas encore mis en maison d'arrêt.5L'armée du pharaon était sortie d'Egypte et, à cette nouvelle, les Babyloniens qui faisaient le siège de Jérusalem en repartirent.6Alors la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée au prophète Jérémie:7«Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Vous annoncerez au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés vers moi pour me consulter: ‘L'armée du pharaon, qui était en marche pour vous porter secours, est en train de retourner dans son pays, en Egypte.8Les Babyloniens vont revenir attaquer cette ville. Ils s'en empareront et y mettront le feu.’9»Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Ne vous bercez pas d'illusions en affirmant: ‘C'est sûr, les Babyloniens partent loin de nous’, car ils ne partiront pas.10Même si vous parveniez à battre toute l'armée babylonienne en guerre contre vous, au point qu'il ne reste chez elle que des hommes blessés, chacun d'eux se relèverait dans sa tente et irait mettre le feu à cette ville.»
Jérémie en prison
11Pendant que l'armée babylonienne s'était éloignée de Jérusalem à cause de l'armée du pharaon,12Jérémie voulut sortir de Jérusalem et se rendre dans le pays de Benjamin pour recevoir la part qui lui revenait parmi le peuple.13Lorsqu'il arriva à la porte de Benjamin, le commandant de la garde, un dénommé Jireija, fils de Shélémia et petit-fils de Hanania, se trouvait là. Il empoigna le prophète Jérémie en disant: «Tu veux te rallier aux Babyloniens!»14Jérémie répondit: «C'est faux! Je ne suis pas en train de me rallier aux Babyloniens», mais Jireija refusa de l'écouter. Il arrêta Jérémie et le conduisit devant les chefs.15Ceux-ci se montrèrent irrités contre Jérémie et le frappèrent avant de le placer en détention dans la maison du secrétaire Jonathan, qu'ils avaient transformée en maison d'arrêt.16Ainsi, Jérémie rejoignit les oubliettes et les cachots, et il y resta longtemps.17Le roi Sédécias envoya quelqu'un chercher Jérémie pour l'interroger en secret dans son palais. Il dit: «Y a-t-il une parole de la part de l'Eternel?» Jérémie répondit par l'affirmative avant d'ajouter: «Tu seras livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone.»18Jérémie dit encore au roi Sédécias: «Quel péché ai-je commis contre toi, contre tes serviteurs et contre ce peuple, pour que vous m'ayez mis en maison d'arrêt?19Où sont donc vos prophètes, ceux qui vous prédisaient que le roi de Babylone ne viendrait pas vous attaquer, ni vous ni ce pays?20Maintenant écoute-moi, je t'en prie, mon seigneur le roi, et fais bon accueil à ma supplication! Ne me renvoie pas dans la maison du secrétaire Jonathan, sinon j'y mourrai!»21Le roi Sédécias ordonna qu'on place Jérémie sous surveillance dans la cour de la prison et qu'on lui donne chaque jour une miche de pain provenant de la rue des boulangers, et ce jusqu'à ce qu'il n'y ait plus de pain dans la ville. Jérémie eut donc pour habitation la cour de la prison.
