Stephen’s Speech

1 And the high priest said, “Are these things so?” 2 And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ 4 Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. 5 Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child. 6 And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years. 7 ‘But I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.’ 8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. 9 “And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him 10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. 13 And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh. 14 And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all. 15 And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers, 16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. 17 “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt 18 until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph. 19 He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive. 20 At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house, 21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. 23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’ 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. 30 “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’ 35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’ 38 This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us. 39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands. 42 But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 43 You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’ 44 “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, 46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.* 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says, 49 “‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? 50 Did not my hand make all these things?’ 51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together* at him. 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1 Le grand-prêtre dit: «Est-ce exact?» 2 Etienne répondit: «Mes frères et pères, écoutez! Le Dieu de gloire est apparu à notre ancêtre Abraham lorsqu'il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu'il ne s'installe à Charan, et lui a dit: 3 Quitte ton pays et ta famille et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.* 4 Il a alors quitté le pays des Chaldéens et est allé habiter à Charan. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu l'a fait passer dans le pays que vous habitez maintenant. 5 Il ne lui a donné aucun héritage dans ce pays, pas même de quoi poser le pied, mais il a promis de lui en donner la possession, ainsi qu'à sa descendance après lui, alors même qu'il n'avait pas d'enfant. 6 Voici ce que Dieu a dit: Ses descendants séjourneront dans un pays étranger; on les réduira en esclavage et on les maltraitera pendant 400 ans. 7 Cependant, la nation dont ils seront esclaves, c'est moi-même qui la jugerai, dit Dieu. Après cela, ils sortiront et ils me serviront dans ce lieu-ci.* 8 Puis Dieu a donné à Abraham l'alliance de la circoncision; ainsi, Abraham a eu pour fils Isaac et l'a circoncis le huitième jour, Isaac a fait de même pour Jacob, et Jacob pour les douze patriarches. 9 »Les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, l'ont vendu pour qu'il soit emmené en Egypte, mais Dieu était avec lui 10 et l'a délivré de toutes ses détresses. Il lui a donné la sagesse et la grâce devant le pharaon, le roi d'Egypte, qui l'a établi gouverneur de l'Egypte et de toute sa maison. 11 Il est alors survenu une famine dans toute l'Egypte et en Canaan. La détresse était grande et nos ancêtres ne trouvaient pas de quoi manger. 12 Jacob a appris qu'il y avait du blé en Egypte et il y a envoyé nos ancêtres une première fois. 13 La deuxième fois, Joseph s'est fait reconnaître par ses frères et le pharaon a ainsi appris quelle était son origine. 14 Puis Joseph a envoyé chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, composée de 75 personnes. 15 Jacob est descendu en Egypte, où il est mort, ainsi que nos ancêtres. 16 Leurs corps ont été transportés à Sichem et déposés dans le tombeau qu'Abraham avait acheté à prix d'argent aux fils d'Hamor à Sichem. 17 »Le temps où devait s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait faite à Abraham approchait, et le peuple a grandi et augmenté en nombre en Egypte 18 jusqu'à la venue d'un autre roi, qui n'avait pas connu Joseph*. 19 Ce roi s'en est pris avec perfidie à notre peuple et a maltraité nos ancêtres au point de leur faire abandonner leurs enfants pour qu'ils ne survivent pas. 20 »A cette époque est né Moïse, qui était beau aux yeux de Dieu. Il a été nourri trois mois chez son père 21 et, quand il a été abandonné, la fille du pharaon l'a adopté et l'a élevé comme son fils. 22 Moïse a été formé avec toute la sagesse des Egyptiens; il était puissant en paroles et en actes. 23 »Il était âgé de 40 ans lorsqu'il a eu à cœur de rendre visite à ses frères, les Israélites. 24 Il en a vu un qu'on maltraitait, a pris sa défense et, pour venger l'homme malmené, a frappé l'Egyptien. 25 Ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur accordait la délivrance par son intermédiaire, pensait-il, mais ils ne l'ont pas compris. 26 Le jour suivant, il est venu au milieu d'eux alors que certains se battaient et il a essayé de ramener la paix en leur disant: ‘Vous êtes frères! Pourquoi vous faites-vous du mal l'un à l'autre?’ 27 Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain l'a repoussé en disant: Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous? 28 Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué l'Egyptien hier?* 29 A cette parole, Moïse a pris la fuite et est allé habiter dans le pays de Madian, où il a eu deux fils. 30 »C'est 40 ans plus tard qu’un ange [du Seigneur] lui est apparu dans le désert du mont Sinaï, dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu*. 31 Voyant cela, Moïse a été étonné de cette apparition; comme il s'approchait pour regarder, la voix du Seigneur s'est fait entendre: 32 Je suis le Dieu de tes ancêtres, le Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob.* Moïse, tout tremblant, n'osait pas regarder. 33 Le Seigneur lui a dit: Retire tes sandales, car l'endroit où tu te tiens est une terre sainte. 34 J'ai vu la souffrance de mon peuple qui est en Egypte, j'ai entendu ses gémissements et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Maintenant, vas-y, je t'enverrai en Egypte.* 35 »Ce Moïse qu'ils avaient renié en disant: Qui t'a établi chef et juge?* c'est lui que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et libérateur avec l'aide de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson. 36 C'est lui qui les a fait sortir d'Egypte en accomplissant des prodiges et des signes miraculeux en Egypte, à la mer Rouge et au désert pendant 40 ans. 37 C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux Israélites: [Le Seigneur notre] Dieu fera surgir pour vous, parmi vos frères, un prophète comme moi.* 38 C'est lui qui, lors de l'assemblée au désert, était avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï et avec nos ancêtres; il a reçu des oracles de vie pour nous les transmettre. 39 »Nos ancêtres n'ont pas voulu lui obéir, mais ils l'ont repoussé et, dans leur cœur, ils se sont tournés vers l'Egypte 40 en disant à Aaron: Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous! En effet, ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir d'Egypte, nous ignorons ce qu'il est devenu.* 41 A ce moment-là, ils ont fait un veau, ils ont offert un sacrifice à l'idole et se sont réjouis de ce que leurs mains avaient fabriqué. 42 Alors Dieu s'est détourné d'eux et les a laissés adorer les corps célestes, comme cela est écrit dans le livre des prophètes: M'avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices pendant 40 ans au désert, communauté d'Israël? 43 Vous avez porté la tente de Moloc et l'étoile de votre dieu Remphan, ces images que vous avez faites pour les adorer! Aussi, je vous déporterai au-delà de Babylone.* 44 »Dans le désert, nos ancêtres avaient la tente du témoignage; celui qui parlait à Moïse lui avait ordonné de la faire d'après le modèle qu'il avait vu. 45 Nos ancêtres l'ont reçue et l'ont introduite, sous la conduite de Josué, dans le pays conquis sur les nations que Dieu a chassées devant eux; et elle y est restée jusqu'à l'époque de David. 46 David a trouvé grâce devant Dieu et a demandé la permission de trouver une habitation pour le Dieu de Jacob, 47 mais c'est Salomon qui lui a construit un temple. 48 Cependant le Très-Haut n'habite pas dans des temples faits par la main de l'homme, comme le dit le prophète: 49 Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre mon marchepied. Quelle maison pourrez-vous me construire, dit le Seigneur, ou quel endroit pourra être mon lieu de repos? 50 N'est-ce pas ma main qui a fait tout cela?* 51 »Hommes réfractaires, incirconcis de cœur et d'oreilles! Vous vous opposez toujours au Saint-Esprit; vous êtes bien comme vos ancêtres. 52 Lequel des prophètes vos ancêtres n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient d'avance la venue du Juste, et c'est lui que vous avez fait maintenant arrêter et dont vous êtes devenus les meurtriers, 53 vous qui avez reçu la loi par l'intermédiaire des anges et qui ne l'avez pas gardée!» 54 En entendant ces paroles, ils avaient le cœur plein de rage et ils grinçaient des dents contre lui. 55 Mais Etienne, rempli du Saint-Esprit, fixa les regards vers le ciel et vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu. 56 Il dit: «Je vois le ciel ouvert et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu.» 57 Ils poussèrent alors de grands cris en se bouchant les oreilles, se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui, 58 le traînèrent à l'extérieur de la ville et se mirent à le lapider. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d'un jeune homme appelé Saul. 59 Ils jetaient des pierres à Etienne qui priait et disait: «Seigneur Jésus, accueille mon esprit!» 60 Puis il se mit à genoux et s'écria d'une voix forte: «Seigneur, ne les charge pas de ce péché!» Après avoir dit cela, il s'endormit.
