Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

1 In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” 4 And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” 5 And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” 6 And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. 8 And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. 9 And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.*

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”* 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus* laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life* will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

1 در يكی از همان روزها، بار ديگر انبوه جمعيت نزد او جمع شدند و باز خوراكشان تمام شد. عيسی شاگردان خود را صدا زد و موضوع را با ايشان در ميان گذاشت و فرمود: 2 «دلم به حال اين مردم میسوزد، چون سه روز است اينجا هستند و ديگر چيزی برای خوردن ندارند. 3 اگر ايشان را گرسنه به خانههايشان بفرستم، مطمئناً در راه ضعف خواهند كرد، چون بعضی از ايشان از راه دور آمدهاند.» 4 شاگردانش با تعجب گفتند: «آيا انتظار داريد در اين بيابان برای اين عده خوراک تهيه كنيم؟» 5 فرمود: «چند نان داريد؟» گفتند: «هفت نان». 6 پس به مردم فرمود تا بر زمين بنشينند. سپس نانها را گرفت و خدا را شكر نمود و تكهتكه كرده، به شاگردانش داد. ايشان نيز نانها را به مردم دادند. 7 چند ماهی كوچک نيز پيدا كردند. ماهیها را نيز بركت داد و به شاگردانش فرمود تا بين مردم تقسيم كنند. 8 مردم همه خوردند و سير شدند. سپس ايشان را به خانههايشان فرستاد. جمعيت در حدود ۴,۰۰۰ نفر بودند. وقتی باقيماندههای خوراک را جمع كردند، هفت سبد بزرگ پر شد. 10 بلافاصله عيسی همراه شاگردان خود سوار قايقی شد و به ناحيه دلمانوته آمد.

فريسيان در طلب معجزه

11 وقتی فريسيان در آن محل، از آمدن او باخبر شدند، گرد آمدند تا با او به بحث و مجادله بپردازند. پس به او گفتند: «برای ما معجزهای كن. مثلاً كاری كن كه در آسمان چيز عجيبی اتفاق بيفتد تا به تو ايمان آوريم.» 12 عيسی آهی از دل برآورد و گفت: «هرگز! مگر چقدر معجزه بايد ببينيد تا ايمان بياوريد؟» 13 پس ايشان را واگذاشت و سوار قايق شد و به آن سوس درياچه رفت.

خميرمايه فريسيان و هيروديس

14 ولی شاگردان قبل از حركت، فراموش كردند به اندازهٔ كافی با خود نان بردارند و در قايق فقط يک نان داشتند. 15 در همان حال كه در درياچه پيش میرفتند، عيسی به ايشان هشدار داد و گفت: «مواظب باشيد و از خميرمايهٔ هيروديس پادشاه و فريسیها خود را دور نگه داريد.» 16 شاگردان با يكديگر دربارهٔ منظور عيسی بحث میكردند؛ و بالاخره به اين نتيجه رسيدند كه لابد عيسی دربارهٔ نان صحبت میكند چون فراموش كردهاند با خود نان بياورند. در صورتی كه منظور عيسی اين بود كه مانند فريسیها دورو، و مثل هيروديس در پی جلال و شهوت دنيا نباشند. 17 عيسی فهميد كه با يكديگر دربارهٔ چه گفتگو میكنند. پس گفت: «هيچ چنين منظوری نداشتم. چرا درک نمیكنيد؟ مگر فكرتان از كار افتاده است؟ 18 شما كه چشم داريد، پس چرا نمیبينيد؟ چرا گوشهايتان را باز نمیكنيد تا بشنويد؟ 19 آيا فراموش كرديد چطور ۵,۰۰۰ مرد را با پنج نان سير كردم؟ چند سبد از باقيماندهها پر شد؟» جواب دادند: «دوازده سبد.» 20 گفت: «وقتی با هفت نان، ۴,۰۰۰ نفر را سير كردم، چقدر باقی ماند؟» گفتند: «هفت سبد!» 21 گفت: «پس چرا معنی سخنان مرا درک نمیكنيد؟»

عيسی مرد كوری را شفا میدهد

22 هنگامی كه به بيتصيدا رسيدند، مرد كوری را نزد او آوردند و از او خواهش كردند كه بر او دست بگذارد و شفايش دهد. 23 عيسی دست آن مرد را گرفت و از ده بيرون برد، آب دهان به چشمهای او ماليد و دستهای خود را بر چشمان او گذاشت و از او پرسيد: «چيزی میبينی؟» 24 مرد به اطراف نگاه كرد و گفت: «میبينم، ولی نه كاملاً خوب. مردم را مثل تنهٔ درختان میبينم كه راه میروند.» 25 عيسی بار ديگر دستهايش را روی چشمان آن مرد گذاشت. هنگامی كه مرد به اطراف چشم دوخت، بينايی كامل يافت و همه چيز را به خوبی میديد. 26 عيسی او را به سوی خانه و خانوادهاش فرستاد و فرمود كه به ده برنگردد.

عقيدهٔ پطرس دربارهٔ عيسی

27 عيسی با شاگردان خود، ايالت جليل را ترک گفت و به دهات قيصريهٔ فيليپ رفت. در بين راه از ايشان پرسيد: «مردم دربارهٔ من چه عقيدهای دارند؟ به نظر آنها من كه هستم؟» 28 شاگردان جواب دادند: «بعضیها فكر میكنند كه شما همان يحيای پيغمبر هستيد؛ عدهای هم میگويند كه شما الياس يا يكی ديگر از پيامبران گذشته هستيد كه دوباره ظهور كرده است.» 29 پرسيد: «شما چطور؟ به نظر شما من كه هستم؟» پطرس گفت: «شما مسيح هستيد.» 30 ولی عيسی به ايشان دستور داد كه دربارهٔ او چيزی به كسی نگويند.

پيشگويی عيسی دربارهٔ مرگ خويش

31 آنگاه عيسی به ايشان گفت كه چه عذابهايی خواهد كشيد، و چطور سران قوم يهود و كاهنان اعظم او را طرد كرده، خواهند كشت، ولی روز سوم دوباره زنده خواهد شد. 32 وقتی عيسی اين مطلب را آشكارا بيان كرد، پطرس او را به كناری كشيد و به او گفت كه نبايد چنين سخنانی بر زبان براند. 33 عيسی برگشت و نگاهی به شاگردان كرد؛ سپس با لحنی تند به پطرس فرمود: «دور شو از من ای شيطان! تو با ديد انسانی به اين موضوع نگاه میكنی، نه با ديد خدايی.» 34 آنگاه شاگردان و مردم را صدا زد و فرمود: «اگر كسی از شما بخواهد پيرو من باشد، بايد از آرزوها و آسايش خود چشم بپوشد و صليب خود را بر دوش گيرد و مرا دنبال كند. 35 هر كه به خاطر من و به خاطر پيام نجاتبخش انجيل، حاضر باشد جانش را فدا كند، آن را نجات خواهد داد. ولی هر كه تلاش كند جانش را حفظ نمايد آن را از دست خواهد داد. 36 «چه فايده كه انسان تمام دنيا را ببرد ولی در عوض جانش را از دست بدهد؟ 37 مگر چيزی با ارزشتر از جان او پيدا میشود؟ 38 و اگر كسی در اين روزگار پر از گناه و بیايمانی، از من و از سخنان من عار داشته باشد، من نيز هنگامی كه با فرشتگان مقدس در شكوه و جلال پدرم بازگردم، از او عار خواهم داشت.»
