1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.2The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place.3The Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said. Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you.4Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go.5If you remain,* then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go.6Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.7When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon,8they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.9Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.10As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”11Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them,12then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.13Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah14and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them.15Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?”16But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”

Jeremia hatte sich nämlich mit gefesselten Händen unter den anderen Gefangenen befunden, die nach Babylonien gebracht werden sollten.2Der Befehlshaber der Leibwache hatte Jeremia holen lassen und zu ihm gesagt: „Jahwe, dein Gott, hat das Unheil über diesen Ort angedroht.3Nun hat er es kommen lassen, weil ihr euch an Jahwe versündigt und nicht auf ihn gehört habt.4Aber dir nehme ich jetzt die Fesseln von den Händen ab. Du bist frei! Wenn du willst, kannst du mit mir nach Babylonien kommen und würdest dort unter meinem Schutz stehen. Wenn du das nicht willst, dann bleib. Das ganze Land steht dir offen, du kannst gehen, wohin du willst.“5Weil er sich aber nicht entscheiden konnte, sagte Nebusaradan zu ihm: „Dann geh zu Gedalja Ben-Ahikam, dem Enkel Schafans, den der König von Babylon als Statthalter über die Städte Judas eingesetzt hat! Bleib bei ihm wohnen, mitten unter deinem Volk. Gedalja als Statthalter
7Einige Offiziere aus Juda waren mit ihren Männern im Landesinnern verstreut. Sie hörten, dass der König von Babylon Gedalja Ben-Ahikam zum Statthalter über Juda eingesetzt hatte und dass ihm die Männer, Frauen und Kinder der armen Landbevölkerung unterstellt worden waren, die nicht mit in die Verbannung nach Babylonien ziehen mussten.8So kamen sie zu Gedalja nach Mizpa. Es waren Jischmaël Ben-Netanja, Johanan und Jonatan Ben-Kareach, Seraja Ben-Tanhumet, die Söhne von Efai aus Netofa und Jesanja aus Maacha mit ihren Männern.9Gedalja schwor ihnen und ihren Männern: „Wenn ihr euch den Chaldäern unterwerft, habt ihr nichts zu befürchten. Bleibt im Land und dient dem König von Babylon, dann wird es euch gut gehen.10Ich selbst bleibe hier in Mizpa und vertrete euch vor den Chaldäern, die zu uns kommen. Ihr könnt in den Ortschaften bleiben, wo ihr euch niedergelassen habt. Kümmert euch um die Weinlese, sammelt das Sommerobst und die Oliven ein und legt euch Vorräte an!“11Viele Judäer waren nach Moab, zu den Ammonitern und nach Edom geflohen. Als sie hörten, dass der König von Babylon einen Rest der Bevölkerung in Juda gelassen und Gedalja zum Statthalter über sie eingesetzt hatte,12kamen auch sie nach Juda zurück und meldeten sich bei Gedalja in Mizpa. Sie konnten noch eine reiche Wein- und Obsternte einbringen.13Eines Tages kamen Johanan Ben-Kareach und die anderen Offiziere, die im Land geblieben waren, zu Gedalja nach Mizpa14und sagten zu ihm: „Weißt du auch, dass Baalis, der König der Ammoniter, Jischmaël Ben-Netanja losgeschickt hat, um dich zu ermorden?“ Aber Gedalja glaubte ihnen nicht.15Johanan machte Gedalja sogar heimlich ein Angebot: „Erlaube mir doch, Jischmaël Ben-Netanja umzubringen. Niemand wird es erfahren. Wir dürfen nicht zulassen, dass er dich tötet und dass alle Judäer, die sich um dich gesammelt haben, wieder zerstreut werden. So wird auch der letzte Rest von Juda zugrunde gehen.“16Aber Gedalja erwiderte Johanan: „Das darfst du auf keinen Fall tun, denn was du über Jischmaël sagst, ist nicht wahr.“
