Those Excluded from the Assembly

1 “No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the Lord. 2 “No one born of a forbidden union may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of his descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord. 3 “No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, 4 because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 5 But the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam; instead the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loved you. 6 You shall not seek their peace or their prosperity all your days forever. 7 “You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land. 8 Children born to them in the third generation may enter the assembly of the Lord.

Uncleanness in the Camp

9 “When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every evil thing. 10 “If any man among you becomes unclean because of a nocturnal emission, then he shall go outside the camp. He shall not come inside the camp, 11 but when evening comes, he shall bathe himself in water, and as the sun sets, he may come inside the camp. 12 “You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out to it. 13 And you shall have a trowel with your tools, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig a hole with it and turn back and cover up your excrement. 14 Because the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give up your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy, so that he may not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you.

Miscellaneous Laws

15 “You shall not give up to his master a slave* who has escaped from his master to you. 16 He shall dwell with you, in your midst, in the place that he shall choose within one of your towns, wherever it suits him. You shall not wrong him. 17 “None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, and none of the sons of Israel shall be a cult prostitute. 18 You shall not bring the fee of a prostitute or the wages of a dog* into the house of the Lord your God in payment for any vow, for both of these are an abomination to the Lord your God. 19 “You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 21 “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. 22 But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin. 23 You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth. 24 “If you go into your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag. 25 If you go into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.

Wer zur Gemeinde des Herrn gehören darf

2 Wenn ihr euch als Gemeinde des HERRN versammelt, darf kein Mann daran teilnehmen, der zerquetschte Hoden hat oder dessen Glied abgeschnitten wurde. 3 Auch jemand, der aus einer verbotenen Beziehung stammt, darf nicht teilnehmen. Noch in der zehnten Generation sind seine Nachkommen von der Gemeinde des HERRN ausgeschlossen. 4 Dasselbe gilt für die Ammoniter und die Moabiter: Sie sind für immer von der Gemeinde des HERRN ausgeschlossen, auch noch in der zehnten Generation. 5 Denn diese beiden Völker haben sich geweigert, euch Brot und Wasser zu geben, als ihr aus Ägypten ´kamt und durch ihr Land` gezogen seid. Sie haben* sogar Bileam, den Sohn Beors, aus Petor in Mesopotamien gerufen und ihm Geld gegeben, damit er euch verflucht. 6 Aber der HERR, euer Gott, war nicht bereit, auf Bileam zu hören. Aus Liebe zu euch wandelte er den Fluch gegen euch in Segen. 7 Mit diesen beiden Völkern dürft ihr niemals Frieden schließen noch euch in irgendeiner Weise für ihr Wohl einsetzen.* Das gilt für alle Zeiten. 8 Die Edomiter und die Ägypter hingegen sollt ihr nicht dauerhaft von euren Versammlungen ausschließen. Denn die Edomiter sind euer Brudervolk, und in Ägypten habt ihr einmal als Fremde gelebt. 9 Wer von ihnen ´bei euch wohnt`, darf ab der dritten Generation dazukommen, wenn ihr euch vor dem HERRN versammelt.

Das Heerlager muss reingehalten werden

10 Wenn ihr gegen eure Feinde in den Krieg zieht und ein Feldlager aufschlagt, dann lasst dort nichts geschehen, was euch unrein macht*. 11 Wenn ein Mann nachts im Schlaf einen Samenerguss hatte, ist er unrein* und muss das Lager verlassen. Er soll ´den ganzen Tag` außerhalb des Lagers bleiben. 12 Gegen Abend soll er seinen Körper mit Wasser abspülen, und bei Sonnenuntergang darf er wieder ins Lager zurückkommen. 13 Bestimmt außerhalb des Lagers einen Ort, wo ihr eure Notdurft verrichten könnt. 14 Haltet dafür Schaufeln bereit. Grabt ein Loch, bevor ihr euch hinhockt, und deckt es nachher wieder zu. 15 Euer Lager soll heilig sein, denn der HERR, euer Gott, ist dort mitten unter euch*, um euch zu schützen und euch den Sieg über eure Feinde zu geben. Er soll nichts Anstößiges* bei euch sehen, damit er sich nicht von euch abwendet.

Schutz für entflohene Sklaven

16 Wenn ein ´ausländischer` Sklave vor seinem Herrn geflohen ist und bei euch Zuflucht sucht, dann liefert ihn nicht an seinen Herrn aus. 17 Nehmt in bei euch auf. Er soll frei entscheiden, an welchem Ort er wohnen will. Beutet ihn nicht aus.

Verbot der kultischen Prostitution

18 Keine Israelitin und kein Israelit darf im Namen irgendeines Gottes Hurerei treiben.* 19 Geld, das mit Hurerei oder anderen schmutzigen Geschäften verdient wurde*, dürft ihr auf keinen Fall in das Heiligtum des HERRN eures Gottes bringen, auch nicht, um ein Gelübde zu erfüllen. Denn der HERR verabscheut Geld, das auf diese Weise eingenommen wurde*.

Bestimmungen über Zinsen

20 Wenn ihr einem anderen Israeliten etwas ausleiht, dann verlangt keine Zinsen dafür – weder für Geld, noch für Getreide noch für sonst etwas, wofür man Zinsen nehmen kann. 21 Von einem Ausländer könnt ihr Zinsen verlangen, aber nicht von jemand aus eurem Volk. ´Wenn ihr das beachtet`, wird der HERR, euer Gott, euch segnen bei allem, was ihr unternehmt in dem Land, das ihr in Besitz nehmt.

Bestimmungen über Gelübde

22 Wenn du vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, ein Gelübde ablegst, dann zögere nicht, es zu erfüllen! Denn der HERR wird es von dir einfordern. ´Wenn du dich nicht daran hältst`, versündigst du dich. 23 Ihm gar nichts zu versprechen, ist keine Sünde. 24 Was du jedoch ausgesprochen hast, musst du auch halten. Du hast dieses Gelübde dem HERRN, deinem Gott, aus freien Stücken gegeben, darum musst du es auf jeden Fall erfüllen.

Erlaubter Mundraub

25 Wenn du den Weinberg eines anderen betrittst, kannst du dort nach Herzenslust Trauben essen, bis du satt bist. Aber sammle sie nicht in ein Gefäß. 26 Wenn du am Kornfeld eines anderen vorbeikommst, darfst du mit der Hand Ähren abreißen ´und die Körner essen`. Mit einer Sichel aber darfst du sie nicht ernten.
