Möte med Jesus sändebud i Jerusalem

1 Medan Paulus och Barnabas var i Antiochia, kom några män från Judeen och började lära de troende att de inte kunde bli räddade om inte männen följde den judiska traditionen med omskärelse* som det står om i Moses lag*. 2 Men Paulus och Barnabas gick emot dem, vilket ledde till ständiga diskussioner och bråk. Till slut bestämde därför de troende att man skulle låta Paulus och Barnabas och några till resa upp till Jerusalem för att reda ut saken med Jesus sändebud och församlingsledarna där. 3 Man utrustade dem för resan och lät dem sedan ge sig iväg. På vägen dit stannade de till i Fenikien och Samarien och berättade för de troende att också många icke-judar hade vänt sig till Gud, vilket gjorde de troende mycket glada. 4 När de kom fram till Jerusalem blev de hjärtligt mottagna av församlingen och sändebuden och ledarna. Paulus och Barnabas berättade sedan om vad Gud hade hjälpt dem att göra. 5 Men då reste sig några män, som hade varit fariseer* innan de blev Jesus efterföljare, och förklarade att alla troende män som inte var judar måste omskäras, och att man skulle kräva att alla följde Moses lag. 6 Jesus sändebud och församlingsledarna höll därför ett särskilt möte om den här frågan. 7 Och efter en lång diskussion reste sig Petrus och sa: ”Bröder, ni vet alla att Gud för länge sedan utsåg mig till att berätta de glada nyheterna om Jesus för andra än judar, så att de också skulle kunna tro. 8 Och Gud, som känner till alla människors tankar, har visat att han har tagit emot dem, genom att ge dem sin heliga Ande precis som han gav den till oss. 9 Gud har inte gjort någon skillnad mellan oss och dem utan accepterade dem helt när de vände om och började tro. 10 Varför vill ni då ifrågasätta det som Gud har gjort och kräva att Jesus efterföljare ska lyda en lag som både vi och våra förfäder har haft svårt att lyda? 11 Nej, vi tror att alla, både vi och de, blir räddade genom vår Herre Jesus kärlek och förlåtelse, som ju ingen har gjort sig förtjänt av.” 12 Efter det blev det tyst på diskussionen, och alla lyssnade till Barnabas och Paulus när de berättade om de under och tecken som Gud hade hjälpt dem att göra bland andra folk. 13 När de hade slutat reste sig Jakob* och sa: ”Bröder, lyssna på mig. 14 Petrus* har påmint oss om hur det gick till första gången en grupp icke-judar tackade ja till Guds inbjudan att få tillhöra honom. 15 Och att andra folk vänder om till Gud stämmer väl överens med det budskap Gud har framfört genom profeterna*. Det står till exempel: 16 ’Sedan ska jag vända tillbaka och bygga upp Davids fallna hus. Jag ska resa upp det som ligger i ruiner, 17 så att alla människor kan söka Herren, ja, alla folk som jag har inbjudit att tillhöra mig. Så säger Herren, som gjorde allt detta 18 känt för länge sedan.’* 19 Jag anser därför att vi inte ska ställa en massa krav på dessa folk som vänder sig till Gud. 20 Det räcker med att vi skriver till dem att de ska låta bli att äta sådant som offrats till avgudar, att de ska avhålla sig från sexuell lössläppthet och från att äta kött från kvävda djur eller något annat som fortfarande har blod i sig.* 21 För Moses lag har man undervisat om överallt under alla tider, och varje vecka läser man ur dem i de judiska synagogorna* på vilodagen*.”

Brevet från församlingen i Jerusalem

22 Sedan beslöt Jesus sändebud och ledarna, tillsammans med hela församlingen, att man skulle sända några representanter till Antiochia tillsammans med Paulus och Barnabas för att meddela resultatet av överläggningarna. De män som valdes ut var två av församlingsledarna: Judas (som kallades Barsabbas) och Silas. 23 Så här löd det brev de fick med sig:”Från Jesus sändebud och församlingsledarna i Jerusalem, till de troende från icke-judiska folk i Antiochia, Syrien och Kilikien. Varma hälsningar! 24 Vi har fått veta att några från vår församling har skapat oro och förvirring bland er med sin undervisning, men dessa män var inte utsända av oss. 25 Vi beslöt därför enhälligt att utse två officiella representanter och skicka dem till er tillsammans med våra älskade bröder Barnabas och Paulus, 26 dessa båda som har riskerat sina liv för vår Herre Jesus Kristus skull. 27 Våra representanter, Judas och Silas, kommer att berätta mer om vad vi har beslutat i den här frågan. 28 Guds heliga Ande och vi har beslutat att inte kräva något annat av er än att ni låter bli att äta sådant som offrats till avgudar, att ni inte äter kött från kvävda djur eller något annat som har blodet kvar i sig, och att ni avhåller er från sexuell lössläppthet. Om ni noga följer detta handlar ni rätt. Vi önskar er allt gott!” 30 De fyra männen reste genast till Antiochia, där man kallade samman alla de troende till ett stort möte och överlämnade brevet. 31 Och när församlingens ledare läst brevet, blev alla mycket glada över detta uppmuntrande besked. 32 Judas och Silas, som också själva hade fått förmågan av Gud att framföra budskap från honom, talade sedan länge till församlingen och uppmuntrade och styrkte dem i deras tro. 33 När de varit där en tid, reste Judas och Silas tillbaka till dem som hade sänt dem, och församlingen i Antiochia önskade dem frid från Gud.* 35 Men Paulus och Barnabas stannade kvar i Antiochia, där de tillsammans med många andra undervisade och spred budskapet om Herren Jesus.

Paulus och Barnabas skiljs åt

36 Efter ett tag sa Paulus till Barnabas: ”Tycker inte du som jag att vi borde åka tillbaka till alla de städer där vi har spridit budskapet om Herren Jesus, för att se hur det går med de troende.” 37 Barnabas höll med honom och föreslog att de skulle ta med sig Johannes Markus. 38 Men Paulus var absolut emot detta, eftersom Johannes Markus hade övergett dem i Pamfylien och inte varit med dem i deras arbete. 39 De blev faktiskt sådana ovänner över detta att de skildes åt. Barnabas tog sedan med sig Johannes Markus och seglade till Cypern. 40 Paulus däremot valde Silas som medhjälpare, och sedan de troende hade överlämnat dem åt Herren Jesus och hans beskydd, 41 reste de genom Syrien och Kilikien för att uppmuntra församlingarna där.

The Jerusalem Council

1 But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. 3 So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers.* 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them. 5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” 6 The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. 7 And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, 9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” 12 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13 After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14 Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written, 16 “‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, 17 that the remnant* of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things 18 known from of old.’ 19 Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. 21 For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, 23 with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers* who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you* with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, 25 it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: 29 that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.” 30 So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. 32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words. 33 And after they had spent some time, they were sent off in peace by the brothers to those who had sent them.* 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Paul and Barnabas Separate

36 And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” 37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
