Le mariage d’Isaac

1 Abraham était un vieillard très âgé. L’Eternel l’avait béni en toutes choses. 2 Il dit à son serviteur le plus ancien qui administrait tous ses biens: Place ta main sous ma cuisse* 3 et jure-moi par l’Eternel, le Dieu du ciel et le Dieu de la terre, que tu ne prendras pas pour mon fils une femme parmi les filles des Cananéens, au milieu desquels j’habite, 4 mais que tu iras dans mon pays*, au sein de ma parenté, prendre une femme pour mon fils Isaac. 5 Le serviteur lui répondit: Peut-être cette femme ne voudra-t-elle pas me suivre ici au pays. Devrai-je alors ramener ton fils dans le pays d’où tu es parti? 6 – Garde-toi bien de ramener mon fils là-bas, lui dit Abraham. 7 L’Eternel, le Dieu du ciel qui m’a fait quitter ma famille et le pays de ma naissance, qui m’a parlé et m’a promis par serment de donner ce pays-ci à ma descendance, te fera précéder par son ange pour que tu puisses emmener de là-bas une femme pour mon fils. 8 Si cette femme ne consent pas à te suivre, tu seras dégagé de ton serment; mais quoi qu’il arrive, tu ne ramèneras pas mon fils là-bas. 9 Alors le serviteur mit sa main sous la cuisse d’Abraham son maître et lui jura d’exécuter ses ordres. 10 Par la suite, il prit dix chameaux de son maître et partit en emportant toutes sortes de biens excellents appartenant à son maître. Il prit la direction de la Haute-Mésopotamie, du côté de la ville où habitait Nahor. 11 Arrivé là-bas, il fit s’agenouiller les chameaux près d’un puits, à l’extérieur de la ville. C’était le soir, au moment où les femmes sortent puiser de l’eau. 12 Alors il pria: Eternel, Dieu d’Abraham mon maître, veuille témoigner ta bonté à mon maître en me faisant rencontrer aujourd’hui celle que je cherche. 13 Voici, je me tiens près de la source et les filles des habitants de la ville vont venir puiser de l’eau. 14 Que celle à qui je dirai: « S’il te plaît, penche ta cruche pour me donner à boire » et qui me répondra: « Bois, et je vais aussi faire boire tes chameaux », soit celle que tu destines à ton serviteur Isaac. Ainsi je saurai que tu témoignes de la bonté à mon maître. 15 Il n’avait pas encore fini de parler, que Rébecca arriva, la cruche sur l’épaule. C’était la fille de Betouel, fils de Milka et de Nahor, le frère d’Abraham. 16 La jeune fille était très belle; elle était vierge, aucun homme ne s’était encore uni à elle. Elle descendit à la source, remplit sa cruche et remonta. 17 Alors le serviteur courut à sa rencontre et lui dit: S’il te plaît, laisse-moi boire un peu d’eau de ta cruche. 18 Elle répondit: Bois, mon seigneur! Et elle s’empressa de descendre la cruche de son épaule pour lui donner à boire. 19 Après quoi, elle lui dit: Je vais aussi puiser de l’eau pour tes chameaux, jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient assez bu. 20 Elle s’empressa de vider sa cruche dans l’abreuvoir, courut encore au puits et puisa de l’eau pour tous les chameaux! 21 Le serviteur, étonné, l’observait sans dire un mot pour voir si, oui ou non, l’Eternel faisait réussir son voyage. 22 Quand les chameaux eurent fini de boire, il prit un anneau d’or d’environ six grammes ainsi que deux bracelets d’or pesant chacun plus de cent grammes qu’il passa aux poignets de la jeune fille. 23 Puis il lui demanda: De qui es-tu la fille? Dis-le-moi, s’il te plaît. Y a-t-il dans la maison de ton père de la place pour que nous puissions y passer la nuit? 24 Elle lui répondit: Je suis une fille de Betouel, le fils de Milka et de Nahor. 25 Puis elle ajouta: Il y a chez nous de la paille et du fourrage en abondance et toute la place pour vous loger. 26 Alors le serviteur s’inclina pour se prosterner devant l’Eternel. 27 Il dit: Béni soit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Abraham mon maître, qui n’a cessé de témoigner sa bonté et sa fidélité à mon maître. Il m’a conduit dans mon voyage jusque dans la parenté de mon maître. 28 La jeune fille courut chez sa mère raconter tout ce qui s’était passé. 29 Rébecca avait un frère nommé Laban. Celui-ci se précipita au dehors et courut rejoindre le serviteur près de la source. 30 Car il avait vu l’anneau et les bracelets aux poignets de sa sœur et il avait entendu Rébecca raconter ce que l’homme lui avait dit; il alla donc trouver le serviteur qui se tenait avec les chameaux près de la source. 31 Il lui dit: Viens chez nous, homme béni de l’Eternel. Pourquoi restes-tu dehors? J’ai préparé la maison et fait de la place pour tes chameaux. 32 Alors le serviteur entra dans la maison et Laban fit décharger les chameaux et leur fit donner de la paille et du fourrage. Il fit apporter aussi de l’eau pour lui laver les pieds ainsi qu’aux hommes qui l’accompagnaient. 33 Puis il leur servit le repas, mais le serviteur prit la parole: Je ne mangerai pas avant d’avoir dit ce que j’ai à dire. – Eh bien, parle! lui dit Laban. 34 – Je suis le serviteur d’Abraham, dit-il. 35 L’Eternel a richement béni mon maître et il a fait de lui un homme important. Il lui a donné des moutons, des chèvres et des bovins, de l’argent et de l’or, des serviteurs et des servantes, des chameaux et des ânes. 36 Dans ses vieux jours, Sara, la femme de mon maître, lui a donné un fils à qui il a fait don de tout ce qu’il possède. 37 Or, mon maître m’a fait prêter serment en disant: « Tu ne feras pas épouser à mon fils une Cananéenne du pays où j’habite. 38 Mais tu te rendras dans la famille de mon père, et c’est là que tu prendras une femme pour mon fils. » 39 J’ai répondu à mon maître: « Peut-être la femme ne voudra-t-elle pas me suivre. » 40 Il m’a dit alors: « J’ai toujours vécu selon la volonté de l’Eternel; il enverra son ange avec toi et fera réussir ton voyage pour que tu trouves une femme pour mon fils dans ma parenté, dans la famille de mon père. 41 Une fois que tu te seras rendu dans ma parenté, si l’on refuse de laisser partir la jeune fille, alors tu seras dégagé du serment que je t’impose. » 42 Or, aujourd’hui, quand je suis arrivé à la source, j’ai prié: Eternel, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, veuille faire réussir le voyage que j’ai entrepris. 43 Je me tiens près de la source; la jeune fille qui sortira pour puiser de l’eau, à qui je demanderai de me donner à boire un peu d’eau de sa cruche, 44 et qui me répondra: « Bois, et je puiserai aussi de l’eau pour tes chameaux », qu’elle soit la femme que tu destines au fils de mon maître. 45 Je n’avais pas encore fini de prier en moi-même, que Rébecca est sortie, la cruche sur l’épaule. Elle est descendue à la source et a puisé de l’eau. Je lui ai demandé: « S’il te plaît, donne-moi à boire. » 46 Elle s’est empressée de descendre sa cruche de l’épaule et m’a dit: « Bois, et je donnerai aussi à boire à tes chameaux. » J’ai donc bu, et elle a aussi donné à boire aux chameaux. 47 Puis je lui ai demandé: « De qui es-tu la fille? » Elle m’a répondu: « Je suis la fille de Betouel, le fils de Nahor et de Milka. » Alors j’ai mis un anneau à son nez et j’ai passé des bracelets à ses poignets. 48 Ensuite, je me suis incliné pour me prosterner devant l’Eternel, et j’ai béni l’Eternel, le Dieu de mon maître Abraham, pour m’avoir conduit sur le bon chemin chez la petite-nièce de mon maître, afin que je la ramène pour son fils. 49 Et maintenant, si vous voulez témoigner une sincère bienveillance à mon maître, dites-le-moi. Sinon, dites-le aussi pour que je me tourne d’un autre côté. 50 Laban et Betouel répondirent: Tout cela vient de l’Eternel. Que pourrions-nous dire de plus en bien ou en mal? 51 Voici Rébecca: elle est là, devant toi. Prends-la, emmène-la et donne-la comme épouse au fils de ton maître, comme l’Eternel en a décidé. 52 Lorsque le serviteur d’Abraham entendit ces paroles, il se prosterna jusqu’à terre devant l’Eternel. 53 Puis il sortit des objets d’argent et d’or et des vêtements pour les donner à Rébecca; il fit aussi de riches présents à son frère et à sa mère. 54 Après cela, lui et ses compagnons mangèrent et burent, puis ils passèrent la nuit dans la maison. Le lendemain matin tôt, il dit: Laissez-moi retourner chez mon maître. 55 Le frère et la mère de Rébecca répondirent: Que la jeune fille reste encore quelques jours avec nous; dans une dizaine de jours, tu partiras avec elle. 56 Mais il plaida: Ne me retardez pas, puisque l’Eternel a fait réussir mon voyage. Laissez-moi partir tout de suite pour retourner chez mon maître. 57 – Appelons la jeune fille, dirent-ils, et demandons-lui son avis. 58 Ils appelèrent donc Rébecca et lui demandèrent: Veux-tu partir avec cet homme? Elle répondit: Oui. 59 Alors ils firent leurs adieux à Rébecca leur sœur, à sa nourrice et au serviteur d’Abraham ainsi qu’à ses gens. 60 Ils bénirent Rébecca et lui dirent: Toi, notre sœur, ╵puisses-tu devenir la mère ╵de milliers de milliers et que ta descendance ╵se rende maître ╵de tous ses ennemis! 61 Alors Rébecca et ses servantes se levèrent et montèrent sur les chameaux pour suivre le serviteur. C’est ainsi que le serviteur emmena Rébecca avec lui. 62 Isaac s’était établi dans la région du Néguev et il revenait du puits de Lachaï-Roï. 63 Le soir, il était sorti seul dans les champs pour se promener*. Levant les yeux, il aperçut au loin des chameaux qui venaient vers lui. 64 Rébecca aussi leva les yeux, elle vit Isaac et sauta à bas du chameau. 65 Elle demanda au serviteur: Qui est cet homme qui vient à notre rencontre dans la campagne? Le serviteur répondit: C’est mon maître. Alors elle prit son voile et se couvrit le visage. 66 Le serviteur raconta à Isaac tout ce qu’il avait fait. 67 Là-dessus, Isaac conduisit Rébecca dans la tente de Sara*, sa mère; il la prit pour femme et il l’aima. C’est ainsi qu’il fut consolé de la mort de sa mère.

1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3 that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, 4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” 6 Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. 7 The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter. 10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia* to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this* I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.” 15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden* whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not. 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel,* and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” 26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.” 28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. Laban ran out toward the man, to the spring. 30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man. And behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and there was water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat. But he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.” He said, “Speak on.” 34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old, and to him he has given all that he has. 37 My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell, 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s house. 41 Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’ 42 “I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, 43 behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” 44 and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’ 45 “Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. 48 Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way* to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. 49 Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.” 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.” 52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me away to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him!”* 61 Then Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went his way. 62 Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
