44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[1] And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. (Mr 15:39) 

New International Version

44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 

New International Reader’s Version

44 Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead. So he called for the Roman commander. He asked him if Jesus had already died. 

King James Version

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
