English Standard Version

4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Jos 15:61; Jud 1:16; Mt 26:28; Mr 1:15; Lu 1:77; Joh 1:6; Ac 2:38) 

New International Version

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 

New International Reader’s Version

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the desert. He preached that people should be baptised and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. 

King James Version

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
