29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes (Ge 44:13; Nu 14:6; 2Sa 1:11; 2Sa 3:31; Job 1:20) 

New International Version

29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 

New International Reader’s Version

29 Later, Reuben came back to the empty well. He saw that Joseph wasn’t there. He was so upset that he tore his clothes. 

King James Version

29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
