25 But when they had stretched him out for the whips,[1] Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” (Ac 16:37)

New International Version

25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, ‘Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?’

New International Reader’s Version

25 A commander was standing there as they stretched Paul out to be whipped. Paul said to him, ‘Does the law allow you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?’

King James Version

25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
