22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ (Jon 3:9) 

New International Version

22 He answered, ‘While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, “Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.” 

New International Reader’s Version

22 He answered, ‘While the child was still alive, I didn’t eat anything. And I cried a lot. I thought, “Who knows? The LORD might have mercy on me. He might let the child live.” 

King James Version

22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
