9 We must not put Christ[1] to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, (Ex 17:2; Ex 17:7; Nu 21:5; Nu 21:6; Ps 78:18) 

New International Version

9 We should not test Christ,[1] as some of them did – and were killed by snakes. 

New International Reader’s Version

9 We should not test the Messiah, as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.
