Hebrews 3

New International Version



1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honour than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honour than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 ‘Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,’ bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. (Nu 12:7) 6 But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. 



7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: ‘Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, “Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.” 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.” ’ (Ps 95:7) 12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today’, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. 15 As has just been said: ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.’ (Ps 95:7; Ps 95:8) 16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

1 Therefore, holy brothers,[1] you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, (Joh 20:21; Ro 15:8; Eph 4:1; Php 3:14) 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s[2] house. (Heb 3:5) 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) (Eph 2:10; Eph 3:9) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, (Ex 14:31; Nu 12:7; De 18:15; De 18:18; De 34:5; Jos 1:2; Jos 8:31; Ps 105:26; Heb 3:2; Re 15:3) 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.[3] (Ps 119:33; Ps 119:112; Mt 10:22; 1Co 3:16; 1Co 6:19; 2Co 6:16; Eph 2:21; 1Ti 3:15; Heb 1:2; Heb 3:14; Heb 6:11; 1Pe 2:5; Re 2:26) 



7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, (Ps 95:7; Heb 3:15; Heb 4:7) 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. (Ac 7:36) 10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ 11 As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” (Heb 4:3; Heb 4:5) 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (Mt 16:16) 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (Isa 44:20; Ro 7:11; Eph 4:22; Heb 10:24) 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. (1Co 15:2; Heb 3:6; Heb 10:23) 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” (Heb 3:7) 16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? (Nu 14:2; Nu 14:24; Nu 14:30; De 1:34; De 1:36; De 1:38) 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? (Nu 14:29; Jud 1:5) 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? (De 1:34; Heb 4:2) 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. (Ps 78:22; Ps 106:24; Heb 4:6)
