Colossians 3

English Standard Version

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (Eph 1:20; Php 3:14; Col 2:12)2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Mt 16:23)3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Ro 6:2; Col 2:20)4 When Christ who is your[1] life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (Joh 11:25; 1Co 15:43; Php 3:21; 1Pe 1:1; 1Pe 1:7; 1Pe 1:13; 1Jo 2:28; 1Jo 3:2)5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:[2] sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (Job 31:25; Ro 1:26; Ro 6:13; Ro 8:13; Ga 5:24; Eph 5:3; Eph 5:5)6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.[3] (Eph 5:6)7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. (Eph 2:2; Eph 2:11)8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. (Eph 4:22; Eph 4:29; Eph 4:31)9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self[4] with its practices (Le 19:11; Ro 6:6; Eph 4:22; Eph 4:25; Col 2:11)10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. (Ro 6:4; Ro 8:29; Ro 12:2; Eph 2:10; Eph 4:24)11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,[5] free; but Christ is all, and in all. (Ro 10:12; 1Co 12:13; Ga 5:6; Eph 1:23)12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, (Ro 8:33; Eph 4:2; Eph 4:32; Php 2:1; Col 3:10)13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Mr 11:25; Col 3:12)14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (Joh 17:23; Eph 4:3; Eph 5:2; 1Th 5:8; Heb 6:1)15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Eph 2:16; Php 4:7; Col 3:17)16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Joh 15:3; Eph 5:19; Col 4:6)17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (1Co 10:31; Eph 5:20; Col 1:12; Col 3:23; Col 4:2)18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. (Eph 5:4; Eph 5:22; Phm 1:8)19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. (Eph 4:31)20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. (Eph 5:24; Tit 2:9)21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters,[6] not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. (Col 3:20)23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, (Col 3:17; Phm 1:16)24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (1Co 7:22; Eph 6:8)25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

Colossians 3

New International Version

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.4 When Christ, who is your[1] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[2]7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.21 Fathers,[3] do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favouritism.

Colossians 3

King James Version

1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Colossians 3

New International Reader’s Version

1 You have been raised up with Christ. So think about things that are in heaven. That is where Christ is. He is sitting at God’s right hand.2 Think about things that are in heaven. Don’t think about things that are only on earth.3 You died. Now your life is hidden with Christ in God.4 Christ is your life. When he appears again, you also will appear with him in heaven’s glory.5 So put to death anything that comes from sinful desires. Get rid of sexual sins and impure acts. Don’t let your feelings get out of control. Remove from your life all evil desires. Stop always wanting more and more. You might as well be worshipping statues of gods.6 God’s anger is going to come because of these things.7 That’s the way you lived at one time in your life.8 But now here are the kinds of things you must also get rid of. You must get rid of anger, rage, hate and lies. Let no dirty words come out of your mouths.9 Don’t lie to one another. You have got rid of your old way of life and its habits.10 You have started living a new life. Your knowledge of how that life should have the Creator’s likeness is being made new.11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew. There is no difference between those who are circumcised and those who are not. There is no rude outsider, or even a Scythian. There is no slave or free person. But Christ is everything. And he is in everything.12 You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient.13 Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you.14 And over all these good things put on love. Love holds them all together perfectly as if they were one.15 Let the peace that Christ gives rule in your hearts. As parts of one body, you were appointed to live in peace. And be thankful.16 Let the message about Christ live among you like a rich treasure. Teach and correct one another wisely. Teach one another by singing psalms and hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing to God with thanks in your hearts.17 Do everything you say or do in the name of the Lord Jesus. Always give thanks to God the Father through Christ.18 Wives, follow the lead of your husbands. That’s what the Lord wants you to do.19 Husbands, love your wives. Don’t be mean to them.20 Children, obey your parents in everything. That pleases the Lord.21 Fathers, don’t make your children bitter. If you do, they will lose hope.22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything. Don’t do it just to please them when they are watching you. Obey them with an honest heart. Do it out of respect for the Lord.23 Work at everything you do with all your heart. Work as if you were working for the Lord, not for human masters.24 Work because you know that you will finally receive as a reward what the Lord wants you to have. You are slaves of the Lord Christ.25 Anyone who does wrong will be paid back for what they do. God treats everyone the same.
