1Aber die Söhne Aarons, Nadab und Abihu, nahmen jeder seine Räucherpfanne und taten Feuer hinein und legten Räucherwerk darauf und brachten fremdes Feuer dar vor den HERRN, das er ihnen nicht geboten hatte.2Da ging Feuer aus von dem HERRN und verzehrte sie, sodass sie starben vor dem HERRN.3Und Mose sprach zu Aaron: Das hat der HERR gemeint, als er sprach: »Ich will geheiligt werden durch die, welche zu mir nahen, und geehrt werden vor dem ganzen Volk!« Und Aaron schwieg still.4Mose aber rief Misael und Elzaphan, die Söhne Ussiels, des Onkels Aarons, und sprach zu ihnen: Tretet herzu und tragt eure Brüder vom Heiligtum hinweg, vor das Lager hinaus!5Und sie traten herzu und trugen sie in ihren Leibröcken vor das Lager hinaus, wie es Mose befohlen hatte.6Da sprach Mose zu Aaron und seinen Söhnen Eleasar und Itamar: Ihr sollt euer Haupthaar nicht entblößen, noch eure Kleider zerreißen, damit ihr nicht sterbt und der Zorn über die ganze Gemeinde kommt. Doch eure Brüder, das ganze Haus Israel, sie sollen weinen über diesen Brand, den der HERR angezündet hat!7Ihr aber sollt nicht vor den Eingang der Stiftshütte hinausgehen, damit ihr nicht sterbt; denn das Öl der Salbung des HERRN ist auf euch! Und sie handelten nach dem Wort Moses.

8Der HERR aber redete mit Aaron und sprach:9Du und deine Söhne mit dir sollen weder Wein noch berauschendes Getränk trinken, wenn ihr in die Stiftshütte geht, damit ihr nicht sterbt. Das sei eine ewige Ordnung für eure [künftigen] Geschlechter,10damit ihr einen Unterschied macht zwischen dem Heiligen und dem Unheiligen, zwischen dem Unreinen und Reinen,11und damit ihr die Kinder Israels alle Ordnungen lehrt, die der HERR zu ihnen durch Mose geredet hat!12Und Mose redete mit Aaron und mit seinen übrig gebliebenen Söhnen, Eleasar und Itamar: Nehmt das Speisopfer, das von den Feueropfern des HERRN übrig bleibt, und esst es ungesäuert beim Altar, denn es ist hochheilig.13Ihr sollt es an heiliger Stätte essen; denn es ist das, was dir und deinen Söhnen bestimmt ist von den Feueropfern des HERRN; denn so ist es mir geboten worden.14Ebenso die Brust des Webopfers und die Keule des Hebopfers — du und deine Söhne und deine Töchter sollen sie mit dir an reiner Stätte essen. Denn dies ist dir und deinen Kindern bestimmt von den Friedensopfern der Kinder Israels.15Die Keule des Hebopfers und die Brust des Webopfers soll man mit den Feueropfern der Fettstücke herzubringen, um sie als Webopfer vor dem HERRN zu weben. Dies soll dir und deinen Söhnen mit dir als ein ewiges Anrecht zufallen, wie es der HERR geboten hat!16Mose aber suchte eifrig nach dem Bock des Sündopfers; und siehe, er war verbrannt worden. Da wurde er zornig über Eleasar und Itamar, die Söhne Aarons, die noch übrig geblieben waren, und sprach:17Warum habt ihr das Sündopfer nicht gegessen an heiliger Stätte? Denn es ist hochheilig, und Er hat es euch gegeben, damit ihr die Schuld der Gemeinde tragt, um für sie Sühnung zu erwirken vor dem HERRN!18Siehe, sein Blut ist nicht in das Innere des Heiligtums hineingebracht worden; ihr hättet es im Heiligtum essen sollen, wie ich es geboten habe!19Aaron aber sprach zu Mose: Siehe, heute haben sie ihr Sündopfer und ihr Brandopfer vor dem HERRN geopfert, und es ist mir dieses geschehen; sollte ich heute vom Sündopfer essen? Wäre es auch recht gewesen in den Augen des HERRN?20Als Mose dies hörte, war es recht in seinen Augen.

The Death of Nadab and Abihu
1Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized* fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them.2And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.3Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace.4And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near; carry your brothers away from the front of the sanctuary and out of the camp.”5So they came near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.6And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons, “Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, and do not tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning that the Lord has kindled.7And do not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses.8And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying,9“Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.10You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,11and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses.”12Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his surviving sons: “Take the grain offering that is left of the Lord’s food offerings, and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.13You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons’ due, from the Lord’s food offerings, for so I am commanded.14But the breast that is waved and the thigh that is contributed you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you, for they are given as your due and your sons’ due from the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the people of Israel.15The thigh that is contributed and the breast that is waved they shall bring with the food offerings of the fat pieces to wave for a wave offering before the Lord, and it shall be yours and your sons’ with you as a due forever, as the Lord has commanded.”16Now Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it was burned up! And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the surviving sons of Aaron, saying,17“Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is a thing most holy and has been given to you that you may bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?18Behold, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary. You certainly ought to have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.”19And Aaron said to Moses, “Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, and yet such things as these have happened to me! If I had eaten the sin offering today, would the Lord have approved?”20And when Moses heard that, he approved.
