1Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.2And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.3And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.4And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:5For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.6Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:7Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.8For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.9When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.10And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.11And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.15And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.16And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.17And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.18And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.19And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?20When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?21And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.22Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.23And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.24And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?25But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings courts.26But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.27This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.28For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.29And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.31And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?32They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.34The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!35But wisdom is justified of all her children.36And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.37And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,38And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.39Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.40And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.41There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.42And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?43Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.44And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.45Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.46My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.47Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.48And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.49And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?50And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
1Nachdem Jesus das alles vor dem Volk gesagt hatte, ging er nach Kafarnaum.2Ein Diener des dort stationierten Hauptmanns, der ihm viel bedeutete, war schwer krank und lag im Sterben.3Als der Hauptmann von Jesus hörte, schickte er einige von den jüdischen Ältesten zu ihm. Sie sollten ihn bitten, mitzukommen und seinen Diener zu heilen.4Die Männer kamen zu Jesus und baten ihn inständig. „Er verdient es, dass du ihm diese Bitte erfüllst“, sagten sie.5„Er liebt unser Volk und hat uns sogar die Synagoge gebaut.“6Jesus ging mit ihnen. Als er nicht mehr weit vom Haus entfernt war, schickte der Hauptmann einige seiner Freunde zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: „Herr, bemühe dich nicht! Ich bin es nicht wert, dass du unter mein Dach kommst.7Deshalb bin ich auch nicht persönlich zu dir gekommen. Sprich nur ein Wort und mein Diener wird gesund.8Ich unterstehe ja auch dem Befehl von Vorgesetzten und habe meinerseits Soldaten unter mir. Sage ich zu einem von ihnen: 'Geh!', dann geht er, und zu einem anderen: 'Komm!', dann kommt er. Und wenn ich zu meinem Diener sage: 'Tu das!', dann tut er es.“9Jesus war sehr erstaunt, das zu hören. Er drehte sich um und sagte zu der Menschenmenge, die ihm folgte: „Ich sage euch: Solch einen großen Glauben habe ich nicht einmal in Israel gefunden.“10Als die Freunde des Hauptmanns in dessen Haus zurückkamen, war der Diener gesund.
Eine Witwe und ihr einziger Sohn
11Einige Zeit später ging er nach Naïn.[1] Seine Jünger und eine große Menschenmenge begleiteten ihn.12Als er sich dem Stadttor näherte, wurde gerade ein Verstorbener herausgetragen, der einzige Sohn seiner Mutter, einer Witwe. Viele Menschen aus der Stadt begleiteten sie.13Als der Herr die Witwe sah, wurde er von tiefem Mitgefühl ergriffen. „Weine nicht!“, sagte er zu ihr.14Dann trat er an die Bahre und berührte sie. Die Träger blieben stehen. „Junger Mann, ich befehle dir, steh auf!“, sagte er zu dem Toten.15Da setzte sich der Tote auf und fing an zu reden, und Jesus gab ihn seiner Mutter zurück.16Alle wurden von Angst und Ehrfurcht gepackt. Sie priesen Gott und sagten: „Ein großer Prophet ist unter uns aufgetreten. Heute hat Gott sein Volk besucht.“17Die Nachricht von dem, was Jesus getan hatte, verbreitete sich im ganzen jüdischen Land und darüber hinaus.
Der Täufer und seine Fragen
18Durch seine Jünger erfuhr auch Johannes der Täufer von diesen Dingen.19Er rief zwei von ihnen zu sich, schickte sie zum Herrn und ließ ihn fragen: „Bist du wirklich der, der kommen soll, oder müssen wir auf einen anderen warten?“20Die beiden Männer kamen zu Jesus und sagten: „Johannes der Täufer hat uns zu dir geschickt und lässt dich fragen: 'Bist du wirklich der, der kommen soll, oder müssen wir auf einen anderen warten?'“21Während sie bei ihm waren, heilte Jesus gerade viele Menschen von Krankheiten, von Plagen und bösen Geistern. Und vielen Blinden schenkte er das Augenlicht.22Jesus gab ihnen zur Antwort: „Geht zu Johannes und berichtet ihm, was ihr gesehen und gehört habt: Blinde sehen, Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein, Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, Armen wird gute Botschaft verkündigt.23Und glücklich zu nennen ist der, der nicht an mir irre wird.“24Als die Boten gegangen waren, wandte sich Jesus an die Menge und fing an, über Johannes zu sprechen: „Was wolltet ihr eigentlich sehen, als ihr in die Wüste hinausgezogen seid? Ein Schilfrohr vielleicht, das vom Wind hin- und herbewegt wird?25Oder was wolltet ihr sonst dort draußen sehen? Einen fein angezogenen Mann? Nein, Leute mit teuren Kleidern und Luxus findet man in den Königspalästen.26Aber was wolltet ihr dann dort draußen sehen? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich versichere euch: Ihr habt mehr als einen Propheten gesehen.27Johannes ist der, von dem es in der Heiligen Schrift heißt: 'Ich sende meinen Boten vor dir her. Er wird dein Wegbereiter sein.' (Mal 3:1)28Ich sage euch: Unter allen Menschen, die je geboren wurden, gibt es keinen Größeren als Johannes den Täufer. Und doch ist der Kleinste im Reich Gottes größer als er.29Und alle, die Johannes zuhörten – selbst die Zöllner –, haben sich dem Urteil Gottes unterworfen und von Johannes taufen lassen.30Doch die Pharisäer und Gesetzeslehrer haben Gottes Plan zu ihrer Rettung und damit auch ihre Taufe durch ihn ‹hochmütig› abgelehnt.“31„Mit wem soll ich die Menschen dieser Generation nur vergleichen? Welches Bild trifft auf sie zu?32Sie sind wie Kinder, die auf dem Markt herumsitzen und sich gegenseitig zurufen: 'Mit der Flöte haben wir euch aufgespielt, aber ihr habt nicht getanzt; Klagelieder haben wir gesungen, aber ihr habt nichts dergleichen getan.'33Als Johannes der Täufer kam, der fastete und keinen Wein trank, sagtet ihr: 'Er ist von einem Dämon besessen.'34Als der Menschensohn kam, der ganz normal isst und trinkt, sagtet ihr: 'Seht, was für ein Schlemmer und Säufer, dieser Freund von Zöllnern und Sündern!'35Und doch bestätigt sich die Weisheit Gottes im Werk von beiden – für die, die sie annehmen.“
Die Hure und der Pharisäer
36Ein Pharisäer hatte Jesus zum Essen eingeladen. Jesus war in sein Haus gekommen und hatte sich zu Tisch gelegt.[2]37In dieser Stadt lebte auch eine Frau, die für ihren unmoralischen Lebenswandel bekannt war. Als sie erfahren hatte, dass Jesus im Haus des Pharisäers zu Gast war, nahm sie ein Fläschchen mit ‹kostbarem› Salböl und ging dorthin.38Sie trat an das Fußende des Polsters, auf dem Jesus lag, und fing so sehr zu weinen an, dass ihre Tränen seine Füße benetzten. Sie trocknete sie dann mit ihren Haaren ab, küsste sie immer wieder und salbte sie mit dem Salböl ein.39Als der Pharisäer, der Jesus eingeladen hatte, das sah, sagte er sich: „Wenn der wirklich ein Prophet wäre, würde er doch merken, was für eine Frau das ist, die ihn da berührt. Er müsste doch wissen, dass das eine Sünderin ist.“40„Simon, ich habe dir etwas zu sagen“, sprach Jesus da seinen Gastgeber an. „Sprich, Rabbi“, sagte dieser.41Jesus begann: „Zwei Männer hatten Schulden bei einem Geldverleiher. Der eine schuldete ihm fünfhundert Denare,[3] der andere fünfzig.42Doch keiner von ihnen konnte ihm das Geld zurückzahlen. Da erließ er es beiden. Was meinst du, wer von beiden wird wohl dankbarer sein?“43„Ich nehme an, der, dem die größere Schuld erlassen wurde“, antwortete Simon. „Richtig!“, sagte Jesus44zu Simon und drehte sich zu der Frau um. „Siehst du diese Frau? Ich bin in dein Haus gekommen, und du hast mir nicht einmal Wasser angeboten, dass ich den Staub von meinen Füßen waschen konnte. Doch sie hat meine Füße mit ihren Tränen gewaschen und mit ihren Haaren getrocknet.45Du hast mir keinen Begrüßungskuss gegeben, aber sie hat gar nicht aufgehört, mir die Füße zu küssen, seit ich hier bin.46Du hast mir den Kopf nicht mit Öl gesalbt, aber sie hat sogar meine Füße mit ‹kostbarem› Salböl bestrichen.47Ich kann dir sagen, woher das kommt: Ihre vielen Sünden sind ihr schon vergeben worden, darum hat sie mir viel Liebe erwiesen. Wem wenig vergeben wird, der zeigt auch wenig Liebe.“48Dann sagte er zu der Frau: „Ja, deine Sünden sind dir vergeben!“49Die anderen Gäste fragten sich: „Für wen hält der sich eigentlich, dass er auch Sünden vergibt?“50Doch Jesus sagte zu der Frau: „Dein Glaube hat dich gerettet. Geh in Frieden!“
1Après avoir dit au peuple tout ce qu’il avait à lui dire, Jésus se rendit à Capernaüm. (Mt 8:5)2Un officier romain avait un esclave malade, qui était sur le point de mourir. Or, son maître tenait beaucoup à lui.3Quand il entendit parler de Jésus, l’officier envoya auprès de lui quelques responsables juifs pour le supplier de venir guérir son esclave.4Ils vinrent trouver Jésus et ils le prièrent instamment: Cet homme, disaient-ils, mérite vraiment que tu lui accordes cette faveur.5En effet, il aime notre peuple: il a même fait bâtir notre synagogue à ses frais.6Jésus partit avec eux. Il n’était plus qu’à une faible distance de la maison quand l’officier envoya des amis pour lui dire: Seigneur, ne te donne pas tant de peine, car je ne remplis pas les conditions[1] pour te recevoir dans ma maison. (Mt 8:8)7C’est la raison pour laquelle je n’ai pas osé venir en personne te trouver. Mais, dis un mot et mon serviteur sera guéri.8Car, moi-même, je suis un officier subalterne, mais j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et quand je dis à l’un: « Va! », il va. Quand je dis à un autre: « Viens! », il vient. Quand je dis à mon esclave: « Fais ceci! », il le fait.9En entendant ces paroles, Jésus fut rempli d’admiration pour cet officier: il se tourna vers la foule qui le suivait et dit: Je vous l’assure, nulle part en Israël, je n’ai trouvé une telle foi!10Les envoyés de l’officier s’en retournèrent alors à la maison où ils trouvèrent l’esclave en bonne santé.11Ensuite[2], Jésus se rendit dans une ville appelée Naïn[3]. Ses disciples et une grande foule l’accompagnaient.12Comme il arrivait à la porte de la ville, il rencontra un convoi funèbre: on enterrait le fils unique d’une veuve. Beaucoup d’habitants de la ville suivaient le cortège.13Le Seigneur vit la veuve et il fut pris de pitié pour elle; il lui dit: Ne pleure pas!14Puis il s’approcha de la civière et posa sa main sur elle. Les porteurs s’arrêtèrent. – Jeune homme, dit-il, je te l’ordonne, lève-toi!15Le mort se redressa, s’assit et se mit à parler. Jésus le rendit à sa mère.16Saisis d’une profonde crainte, tous les assistants louaient Dieu et disaient: Un grand prophète est apparu parmi nous! Et ils ajoutaient: Dieu est venu prendre soin de son peuple!17Cette déclaration concernant Jésus se répandit dans toute la Judée et dans les régions environnantes.
Jésus et Jean-Baptiste
18Jean fut informé par ses disciples de tout ce qui se passait. Il appela alors deux d’entre eux (Mt 11:2)19et les envoya auprès du Seigneur pour demander: Es-tu celui qui devait venir[4], ou bien devons-nous en attendre un autre? (Mt 11:3)20Ces hommes se présentèrent à Jésus et lui dirent: C’est Jean-Baptiste qui nous envoie. Voici ce qu’il te fait demander: « Es-tu celui qui devait venir, ou bien devons-nous en attendre un autre? »21Or, au moment où ils arrivaient, Jésus guérit plusieurs personnes de diverses maladies et infirmités. Il délivra des gens qui étaient sous l’emprise d’esprits mauvais et rendit la vue à plusieurs aveugles.22Il répondit alors aux envoyés: Retournez auprès de Jean et racontez-lui ce que vous avez vu et entendu: les aveugles voient, les paralysés marchent normalement, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres[5]. (Isa 35:5; Isa 61:1)23Heureux celui qui ne perdra pas la foi à cause de moi!24Après le départ des messagers de Jean, Jésus saisit cette occasion pour parler de Jean à la foule: Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert? Un roseau agité çà et là par le vent?25Qui donc êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme habillé avec élégance? Ceux qui portent des habits somptueux et qui vivent dans le luxe habitent les palais royaux.26Mais qu’êtes-vous donc allés voir au désert? Un prophète? Oui, assurément, et même bien plus qu’un prophète, c’est moi qui vous le dis.27Car c’est celui dont il est écrit: J’enverrai mon messager devant toi, il te préparera le chemin[6]. (Mal 3:1)28Je vous l’assure: parmi tous les hommes qui sont nés d’une femme, il n’y en a pas de plus grand que Jean. Et pourtant, le plus petit dans le royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui. (Mt 11:16)29Tous les gens du peuple et tous les collecteurs d’impôts qui ont écouté le message de Jean et se sont fait baptiser par lui ont reconnu que Dieu est juste.30Mais les pharisiens et les enseignants de la Loi, qui ont refusé de se faire baptiser par lui, ont rejeté la volonté de Dieu à leur égard.31A qui donc pourrais-je comparer les gens de notre temps? A qui ressemblent-ils?32Ils sont comme des enfants assis sur la place du marché qui se crient les uns aux autres: Quand nous avons joué de la flûte, vous n’avez pas dansé! Et quand nous avons chanté des airs de deuil, vous ne vous êtes pas mis à pleurer!33En effet, Jean-Baptiste est venu, il ne mangeait pas de pain, il ne buvait pas de vin. Qu’avez-vous dit alors? « Il a un démon en lui! ».34Le Fils de l’homme est venu, il mange et boit, et vous vous écriez: « Cet homme ne pense qu’à faire bonne chère et à boire du vin, il est l’ami des collecteurs d’impôts et des pécheurs notoires. »35Cependant, la sagesse de Dieu est reconnue comme telle par ceux qui la reçoivent.
L’amour, fruit du pardon
36Un pharisien invita Jésus à manger. Jésus se rendit chez lui et se mit à table.37Survint une femme connue dans la ville pour sa vie dissolue. Comme elle avait appris que Jésus mangeait chez le pharisien, elle avait apporté un flacon d’albâtre[7] rempli de parfum.38Elle se tint derrière lui, à ses pieds[8]. Elle pleurait; elle se mit à mouiller de ses larmes les pieds de Jésus; alors elle les essuya avec ses cheveux et, en les embrassant, elle versait le parfum sur eux.39En voyant cela, le pharisien qui l’avait invité se dit: Si cet homme était vraiment un prophète, il saurait quelle est cette femme qui le touche, que c’est quelqu’un qui mène une vie dissolue.40Jésus lui répondit à haute voix: Simon, j’ai quelque chose à te dire. – Oui, Maître, parle, répondit le pharisien.41– Il était une fois un prêteur à qui deux hommes devaient de l’argent. Le premier devait cinq cents pièces d’argent; le second cinquante[9].42Comme ni l’un ni l’autre n’avaient de quoi rembourser leur dette, il fit cadeau à tous deux de ce qu’ils lui devaient. A ton avis, lequel des deux l’aimera le plus?43Simon répondit: Celui, je suppose, auquel il aura remis la plus grosse dette. – Voilà qui est bien jugé, lui dit Jésus.44Puis, se tournant vers la femme, il reprit: Tu vois cette femme? Eh bien, quand je suis entré dans ta maison, tu ne m’as pas apporté d’eau pour me laver les pieds[10]; mais elle, elle me les a arrosés de ses larmes et les a essuyés avec ses cheveux.45Tu ne m’as pas accueilli en m’embrassant, mais elle, depuis que je suis entré, elle n’a cessé de couvrir mes pieds de baisers.46Tu n’as pas versé d’huile parfumée sur ma tête, mais elle, elle a versé du parfum sur mes pieds.47C’est pourquoi je te le dis: ses nombreux péchés lui ont été pardonnés, c’est pour cela qu’elle m’a témoigné tant d’amour. Mais celui qui a eu peu de choses à se faire pardonner ne manifeste que peu d’amour!48Puis il dit à la femme: Tes péchés te sont pardonnés.49Les autres invités se dirent en eux-mêmes: « Qui est donc cet homme qui ose pardonner les péchés? »50Mais Jésus dit à la femme: Parce que tu as cru en moi, tu es sauvée; va en paix.
