1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (Mt 16:6; Mt 16:11; Mt 23:28; Mr 8:15; Mr 12:15; Lu 11:29; 1Co 5:6; Ga 5:9) 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. (Mt 10:26; Mr 4:22; Lu 8:17; 1Ti 5:25) 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. (Mt 6:6; Lu 5:19) 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. (Isa 8:12; Isa 51:12; Jer 1:8; 1Pe 3:14) 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[1] Yes, I tell you, fear him! (Jas 4:12) 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[2] And not one of them is forgotten before God. (Ps 50:11) 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. (1Sa 14:45; Mt 6:26; Mt 12:12) 8 “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, (Mt 25:31; Lu 15:10; Ro 10:9; 1Ti 5:21; Heb 10:35; Re 3:5) 9 but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. (Mt 7:23; Mt 25:12; Mr 8:38; Lu 12:8; Lu 13:25; 2Ti 2:12; 2Pe 2:1; 1Jo 2:23) 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. (Mt 11:19; Mt 12:31; Mr 3:28; Joh 7:12; Joh 9:24; Ac 7:51; 1Ti 1:12; Heb 6:4; Heb 10:26; Heb 10:29; 1Jo 5:16) 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, (Mt 10:17; Mt 10:19; Mt 23:34; Mr 13:11; Lu 12:22; Lu 21:12; Lu 21:14; Tit 3:1) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (Mt 10:19) 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” (Lu 11:27) 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” (Ex 2:14; Mic 6:8; Ac 7:27; Ro 2:1; Ro 2:3; Ro 9:20) 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (1Ti 6:6; Heb 13:5) 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, (Ps 49:16) 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ (Ec 5:10) 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. (Lu 12:24) 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ (Pr 27:1; Ec 2:24; Ec 11:9; Lu 15:23; 1Co 15:32; Jas 4:13) 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ (Job 27:8; Job 27:17; Ps 39:6; Ec 2:18; Ec 2:21; Jer 17:11; Mt 16:26; Lu 12:19) 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Mt 6:19) 22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. (Mt 6:25; Mt 10:19; Mt 13:22; Lu 10:41; Lu 12:11; 1Co 7:32; Php 4:6; 1Pe 5:7) 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! (Job 38:41; Ps 147:9; Lu 12:7) 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[3] (Lu 2:52) 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[4] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (1Ki 10:4) 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! (Mt 8:26; Mt 14:31; Mt 16:8; Lu 17:6) 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. (Jas 1:6) 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. (Mt 6:8) 31 Instead, seek his[5] kingdom, and these things will be added to you. (1Ki 3:11; Mt 5:6; Mt 5:20; Mr 10:29; Lu 11:2; 1Ti 4:8; 1Pe 3:9) 32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. (Mt 6:20; Mt 19:21; Lu 11:41; Lu 12:21; Lu 16:9; 1Pe 1:4) 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Mt 6:21) 35 “Stay dressed for action[6] and keep your lamps burning, (Mt 25:7; Eph 6:14; 1Pe 1:13) 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. (2Pe 3:12; Re 3:20) 37 Blessed are those servants[7] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. (Mt 24:42; Mt 24:46; Lu 12:35; Lu 17:8; Lu 22:27; Joh 13:4) 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he[8] would not have left his house to be broken into. (Mt 24:43; 1Th 5:2; 2Pe 3:10; Re 3:3) 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Mt 25:10; Lu 12:47; Lu 21:27) 41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” (Mr 13:37) 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? (Mt 24:45; Lu 16:1) 43 Blessed is that servant[9] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. (Joh 13:17; Re 16:15) 44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. (Mt 25:21; Mt 25:23) 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, (Mt 25:5; 1Th 5:7; Heb 10:37; 2Pe 3:4; 2Pe 3:9) 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. (Lu 12:40; 2Pe 3:12) 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. (De 25:2; Mt 11:24; Lu 12:40; Joh 15:22; Joh 15:24; Jas 4:17; 2Pe 2:21) 48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (Le 5:17; Nu 15:29; Mt 13:12; Mt 25:29; Ro 1:19; Ro 2:14; 1Ti 1:13) 49 “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! (Mt 3:11) 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! (Mr 10:38; 2Co 5:14) 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. (Mt 10:34; Re 6:4) 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” (Mic 7:6; Mt 10:21) 54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. (1Ki 18:43; Mt 16:2) 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. (Mt 20:12; Lu 12:54) 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? (Mt 16:3) 57 “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? (Lu 21:30; Joh 7:24; 1Co 11:13) 58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. (Pr 25:8; Mt 5:25) 59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”[10] (Mt 18:34; Mr 12:42; Lu 21:2)

1 Unterdessen kamen viele Tausend Menschen zusammen, sodass sie einander fast niedertraten. Da fing er an und sagte zuerst zu seinen Jüngern: Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, das ist die Heuchelei. (Mt 10:26; Mt 16:6; Mr 8:15) 2 Es ist aber nichts verborgen, was nicht offenbar wird, und nichts geheim, was man nicht wissen wird. (Mt 10:26; Mr 4:22; Lu 8:17) 3 Darum, was ihr in der Finsternis sagt, das wird man im Licht hören; und was ihr ins Ohr flüstert in den Kammern, das wird man auf den Dächern verkündigen. 4 Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten und danach nichts mehr tun können. (Joh 15:14) 5 Ich will euch aber zeigen, wen ihr fürchten sollt: Fürchtet den, der, nachdem er getötet hat, Macht hat, in die Hölle zu werfen. Ja, ich sage euch, den sollt ihr fürchten. 6 Verkauft man nicht fünf Sperlinge für zwei Groschen? Dennoch ist vor Gott nicht einer von ihnen vergessen. 7 Auch sind die Haare auf eurem Haupt alle gezählt. Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr seid kostbarer als viele Sperlinge. (Lu 21:18; Lu 24:1) 8 Ich sage euch aber: Wer mich bekennt vor den Menschen, zu dem wird sich auch der Menschensohn bekennen vor den Engeln Gottes. 9 Wer mich aber verleugnet vor den Menschen, der wird verleugnet werden vor den Engeln Gottes. (1Sa 2:30; Lu 9:26) 10 Und wer ein Wort gegen den Menschensohn sagt, dem soll es vergeben werden; wer aber den Heiligen Geist lästert, dem soll es nicht vergeben werden. (Mt 12:32; Mr 3:28) 11 Wenn sie euch aber führen werden in die Synagogen und vor die Machthaber und die Obrigkeiten, so sorgt nicht, wie oder womit ihr euch verantworten oder was ihr sagen sollt; (Mt 10:17; Mr 13:11; Lu 21:12) 12 denn der Heilige Geist wird euch in derselben Stunde lehren, was ihr sagen sollt. 13 Es sprach aber einer aus dem Volk zu ihm: Meister, sage meinem Bruder, dass er mit mir das Erbe teile. 14 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Schlichter über euch gesetzt? 15 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Seht zu und hütet euch vor aller Habgier; denn niemand lebt davon, dass er viele Güter hat. (Ec 5:9; 1Ti 6:9; Jas 5:1) 16 Und er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis und sprach: Es war ein reicher Mensch, dessen Land hatte gut getragen. 17 Und er dachte bei sich selbst und sprach: Was soll ich tun? Ich habe nichts, wohin ich meine Früchte sammle. 18 Und sprach: Das will ich tun: Ich will meine Scheunen abbrechen und größere bauen und will darin sammeln all mein Korn und meine Güter 19 und will sagen zu meiner Seele: Liebe Seele, du hast einen großen Vorrat für viele Jahre; habe nun Ruhe, iss, trink und habe guten Mut! (Ps 39:7; Ps 49:17; Ec 2:24) 20 Aber Gott sprach zu ihm: Du Narr! Diese Nacht wird man deine Seele von dir fordern. Und wem wird dann gehören, was du bereitet hast? (Lu 9:25) 21 So geht es dem, der sich Schätze sammelt und ist nicht reich bei Gott. 22 Er sprach aber zu seinen Jüngern: Darum sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um das Leben, was ihr essen sollt, auch nicht um den Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt. (Mt 6:20; Mt 6:25) 23 Denn das Leben ist mehr als die Nahrung und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung. 24 Seht die Raben: Sie säen nicht, sie ernten nicht, sie haben keinen Keller und keine Scheune, und Gott ernährt sie doch. Wie viel mehr seid ihr als die Vögel! (Job 38:41; Ps 147:9) 25 Wer ist unter euch, der, wie sehr er sich auch darum sorgt, seiner Länge[1] eine Elle zusetzen könnte? 26 Wenn ihr nun auch das Geringste nicht vermögt, warum sorgt ihr euch um das Übrige? 27 Seht die Lilien, wie sie wachsen: Sie arbeiten nicht, auch spinnen sie nicht. Ich sage euch aber, dass auch Salomo in aller seiner Herrlichkeit nicht gekleidet gewesen ist wie eine von ihnen. (1Ki 10:4) 28 Wenn nun Gott das Gras, das heute auf dem Feld steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet, wie viel mehr wird er euch kleiden, ihr Kleingläubigen! 29 Darum auch ihr, fragt nicht danach, was ihr essen oder was ihr trinken sollt, und macht euch keine Unruhe. 30 Nach dem allen trachten die Heiden in der Welt; aber euer Vater weiß, dass ihr dessen bedürft. 31 Trachtet vielmehr nach seinem Reich, so wird euch dies zufallen. 32 Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde! Denn es hat eurem Vater wohlgefallen, euch das Reich zu geben. (Lu 22:29) 33 Verkauft, was ihr habt, und gebt Almosen. Macht euch Geldbeutel, die nicht altern, einen Schatz, der niemals abnimmt, im Himmel, wo sich kein Dieb naht, und den keine Motten fressen. (Lu 18:22) 34 Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein. 35 Lasst eure Lenden umgürtet sein und eure Lichter brennen (Ex 12:11; Mt 24:42; Mt 25:1; 1Pe 1:13) 36 und seid gleich den Menschen, die auf ihren Herrn warten, wann er aufbrechen wird von der Hochzeit, auf dass, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sie ihm sogleich auftun. (Re 3:20) 37 Selig sind die Knechte, die der Herr, wenn er kommt, wachend findet. Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird sich schürzen und wird sie zu Tisch bitten und kommen und ihnen dienen. 38 Und wenn er kommt in der zweiten oder in der dritten Nachtwache und findet’s so: Selig sind sie. 39 Das sollt ihr aber wissen: Wenn der Hausherr wüsste, zu welcher Stunde der Dieb kommt, so ließe er nicht in sein Haus einbrechen. (1Th 5:2; 2Pe 3:10; Re 3:3; Re 16:15) 40 Seid auch ihr bereit! Denn der Menschensohn kommt zu einer Stunde, da ihr’s nicht meint. (Mr 13:33; Mr 13:35) 41 Petrus aber sprach: Herr, sagst du dies Gleichnis zu uns oder auch zu allen? 42 Und der Herr sprach: Wer ist nun der treue und kluge Verwalter, den der Herr über sein Gesinde setzt, dass er ihnen zur rechten Zeit gebe, was ihnen an Getreide zusteht? 43 Selig ist der Knecht, den sein Herr, wenn er kommt, solches tun sieht. 44 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird ihn über alle seine Güter setzen. 45 Wenn aber jener Knecht in seinem Herzen sagt: Mein Herr lässt sich Zeit zu kommen, und fängt an, die Knechte und Mägde zu schlagen, auch zu essen und zu trinken und sich vollzusaufen, 46 dann wird der Herr dieses Knechts kommen an einem Tage, an dem er’s nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht kennt, und wird ihn in Stücke hauen lassen und wird ihm sein Teil geben bei den Ungläubigen. 47 Der Knecht aber, der den Willen seines Herrn kennt und hat nichts vorbereitet noch nach seinem Willen getan, der wird viel Schläge erleiden. (Jas 4:17) 48 Wer ihn aber nicht kennt und getan hat, was Schläge verdient, wird wenig Schläge erleiden. Wem viel gegeben ist, bei dem wird man viel suchen; und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man umso mehr fordern. 49 Ich bin gekommen, Feuer auf die Erde zu werfen; was wollte ich lieber, als dass es schon brennte! (Mt 10:34) 50 Aber ich muss mich taufen lassen mit einer Taufe, und wie ist mir so bange, bis sie vollendet ist! (Mr 10:38; Lu 18:31) 51 Meint ihr, dass ich gekommen bin, Frieden zu bringen auf Erden? Ich sage euch: Nein, sondern Zwietracht. (Lu 2:14; Lu 2:34) 52 Denn von nun an werden fünf in einem Hause uneins sein, drei gegen zwei und zwei gegen drei. 53 Es wird der Vater gegen den Sohn sein und der Sohn gegen den Vater, die Mutter gegen die Tochter und die Tochter gegen die Mutter, die Schwiegermutter gegen die Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter gegen die Schwiegermutter. (Mic 7:6; Lu 21:16) 54 Er sprach aber zu der Menge: Wenn ihr eine Wolke aufsteigen seht im Westen, so sagt ihr gleich: Es gibt Regen. Und es geschieht so. (Mt 16:2) 55 Und wenn der Südwind weht, so sagt ihr: Es wird heiß werden. Und es geschieht so. 56 Ihr Heuchler! Das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels könnt ihr prüfen; warum aber könnt ihr diese Zeit nicht prüfen? 57 Warum aber urteilt ihr nicht auch von euch aus darüber, was recht ist? 58 Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher vor den Fürsten gehst, so bemühe dich auf dem Wege, von ihm loszukommen, damit er nicht etwa dich vor den Richter ziehe, und der Richter überantworte dich dem Gerichtsdiener, und der Gerichtsdiener werfe dich ins Gefängnis. (Mt 5:25) 59 Ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort nicht herauskommen, bis du auch den letzten Heller bezahlt hast.

1 Nel frattempo, le persone si erano riunite a migliaia, tanto che rischiavano di calpestarsi a vicenda. Gesù si rivolse ai discepoli e li mise in guardia: «Non diventate ipocriti come i Farisei: la loro ipocrisia è come il lievito! 2 Ma non cʼè niente che possa rimanere nascosto per sempre. 3 Perciò qualsiasi cosa abbiate detto in segreto, sarà udita alla luce; e ciò che avete sussurrato allʼorecchio nelle stanze più appartate, sarà gridato dai tetti delle case, perché tutti possano sentire! 4 Cari amici, non abbiate paura di quelli che vogliono uccidervi. Essi, infatti, possono soltanto uccidere il vostro corpo, ma non hanno potere sulla vostra anima. 5 Ma vi dico io di chi dovete aver paura: temete Dio che ha il potere di dare la morte e poi di gettare allʼinferno! 6 Quanto costano cinque passeri? Soltanto due soldi, no? Eppure Dio non ne dimentica nemmeno uno! 7 E conosce perfino il numero esatto dei capelli che avete in testa! Perciò non temete, per lui valete di più voi, che molti passeri! 8 Inoltre vi dico: chiunque riconosce pubblicamente di appartenere a me, anchʼio, il Figlio dellʼuomo, lo riconoscerò davanti agli angeli di Dio. 9 Ma chi rinnega pubblicamente di appartenere a me, sarà rinnegato davanti agli angeli di Dio. 10 Tuttavia, quelli che parlano contro di me possono essere perdonati, ma chi avrà bestemmiato contro lo Spirito Santo non sarà perdonato mai più. 11 E quando sarete processati dalle autorità e dai magistrati giudei nelle sinagoghe, non preoccupatevi di quello che direte in vostra difesa, 12 perché sarà lo Spirito Santo che, al momento opportuno, vi darà le parole giuste». 13 Dalla folla un tale gridò: «Signore, per piacere diʼ a mio fratello di dividere con me lʼeredità!» 14 Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Amico, chi mi ha eletto giudice sui vostri affari, per decidere questo tipo di cose?» 15 Poi, rivolto agli altri, disse: «Badate di non desiderare mai ciò che non avete! Perché la vita vera non dipende dalle ricchezze che possediamo!» 16 Poi raccontò questa parabola: «Un uomo ricco aveva una campagna fertile che produceva abbondanti raccolti. 17 I suoi granai erano così pieni che traboccavano, tanto da non potervi aggiungere più nulla. Lʼuomo pensava a come risolvere il problema. 18 Finalmente esclamò: “Ecco che cosa farò: demolirò i vecchi granai e ne costruirò altri più grandi! Così avrò posto a sufficienza per il mio grano e le mie proprietà. 19 Poi finalmente siederò e dirò a me stesso vecchio mio, hai immagazzinato abbastanza per gli anni futuri. Ora prenditela comoda! Mangia, bevi e godi!” 20 Ma Dio gli disse: “Sciocco, stanotte morirai. A chi andranno allora tutte le tue ricchezze?” 21 Proprio così, chi accumula ricchezze sulla terra, anziché in cielo, è davvero sciocco!» 22 Poi Gesù, rivolgendosi ai discepoli, aggiunse: «Perciò io vi dico: non preoccupatevi di ciò che mangerete, né dei vestiti che indosserete. 23 Perché la vita è molto più importante del cibo e il corpo vale più dei vestiti. 24 Date unʼocchiata ai corvi: non seminano, non raccolgono e non hanno neppure granai per immagazzinare il loro cibo, eppure vivono bene, perché Dio li nutre. E voi per il Signore siete ben più importanti degli uccelli! 25 Inoltre, a che serve preoccuparsi? Che ci si guadagna? Aggiungerà forse un solo giorno alla vostra vita? Certo che no! 26 Quindi, se la vostra preoccupazione non serve nemmeno per queste piccole cose, a che serve stare in ansia per quelle più importanti? 27 Guardate i gigli. Non sʼaffaticano e non filano. Eppure nemmeno Salomone, con tutta la sua ricchezza, fu vestito come uno di loro. 28 Ora, se Dio provvede a rivestire i fiori, che sono qui oggi e domani non ci saranno più, a maggior ragione provvederà anche ai vostri vestiti, gente di poca fede! 29 E anche per il cibo: non preoccupatevi di ciò che mangerete o berrete, non preoccupatevene affatto! 30 Tutta lʼumanità si affanna ogni giorno per queste cose, ma il vostro Padre che è in cielo sa che ne avete bisogno. 31 Se farete in modo che il Regno di Dio sia il vostro primo interesse, Dio vi darà tutto il resto. 32 Perciò non temete, piccolo gregge, perché è stata una gran gioia per il Padre vostro darvi il suo Regno. 33 Vendete ciò che possedete e date a quelli che ne hanno bisogno. Questo riempirà il vostro portafoglio in cielo! E i portafogli del cielo non hanno strappi, né buchi. I tesori che avete là non scompariranno; nessun ladro può rubarveli e le tarme non possono rovinarli. 34 Perché, dove è il vostro tesoro, lì saranno anche il vostro cuore e i vostri pensieri. 35-36 Siate pronti per servire e tenete accese le vostre lampade. Siate come coloro che aspettano il padrone che deve tornare da una festa di nozze, per essere pronti ad aprirgli subito, appena arriva e bussa. 37 Beati quelli che, al suo ritorno, il Signore troverà pronti! Egli stesso li farà accomodare a tavola e si preparerà per servirli mentre siedono e mangiano. 38 Egli potrebbe tornare alle nove di sera, oppure a mezzanotte. Ma in qualsiasi momento arrivi, ci sarà una grande gioia per i suoi servi che sono pronti! 39 Tutti si terrebbero pronti per riceverlo, se conoscessero il momento esatto del suo ritorno; proprio come starebbero allʼerta per un ladro, sapendo quando arriva. 40 Perciò, state pronti ogni momento, perché io, il Messia, arriverò quando meno ve lo aspettate!» 41 Allora Pietro chiese: «Signore, stai parlando solo per noi o per tutti?» 42-44 E il Signore rispose: «Le mie parole sono dirette a qualsiasi uomo fedele e saggio a cui il padrone ha affidato il compito di distribuire il cibo agli altri servi. Se il padrone torna e trova che ha fatto un buon lavoro, per lui ci sarà una ricompensa: il padrone gli affiderà tutti i suoi beni. 45 Ma se quellʼuomo comincia a pensare: “Ci vorrà molto prima che torni il mio padrone…” e si mette a frustare i servi di cui è responsabile, a passare il suo tempo in divertimenti e a gozzovigliare; 46 ebbene, il suo padrone tornerà quando meno se lo aspetta, lo licenzierà e gli farà fare la fine che meritano glʼinfedeli. 47 Quel servo sarà punito severamente, perché, pur sapendo qual era il suo dovere, non ha voluto farlo. 48 Ma tutti quelli che non si rendono conto di agire male riceveranno una punizione meno severa. Si pretende molto da quelli a cui è stato dato molto, perché la loro responsabilità è maggiore. 49 Sono venuto a portare il fuoco sulla terra, e magari avessi già terminato il mio compito! 50 Un terribile battesimo mi aspetta e sono angosciato finché non lʼavrò ricevuto. 51 Pensate, forse, che sia venuto a portare pace sulla terra? No! Lotta e divisione piuttosto! 52 Dʼora in poi le famiglie si divideranno in due gruppi; tre per me e due contro di me, oppure il contrario. 53 Verso di me, un padre deciderà in un modo e il figlio gli starà contro; madre e figlia saranno in disaccordo; e la decisione di una suocera sarà contrastata dalla nuora». 54 Poi Gesù si rivolse alla folla e disse: «Quando vedete che le nuvole cominciano a formarsi ad ovest, dite: “Fra un poʼ pioverà!” Ed avete ragione. 55 Quando, invece, sentite spirare il vento del sud, dite: “Oggi farà un caldo da morire!” Ed anche questo è giusto. 56 Ipocriti! Sapete prevedere il tempo che farà, ma non volete accorgervi del significato delle cose che accadono in questo periodo! 57 Perché non volete rendervi conto di persona di ciò che è giusto? 58 Se hai una causa in corso e mentre vai in tribunale incontri per la via il tuo accusatore, cercherai senzʼaltro di sistemare la faccenda tra di voi prima che arrivi al giudice, altrimenti corri il rischio di finire in prigione! 59 In tal caso, ti dico che non sarai liberato, finché non avrai pagato fino allʼultimo centesimo!»
