1Saraï, l’épouse d’Abram, ne lui avait pas donné d’enfant. Mais elle avait une esclave égyptienne nommée Agar.2Elle dit à Abram: Tu vois que l’Eternel m’a empêchée d’avoir des enfants[1]. Va donc vers ma servante: peut-être aurai-je un fils par son intermédiaire. Abram suivit le conseil de sa femme. (Gn 25:21; Lv 20:20; Ps 127:3; Jr 22:30)3Saraï, femme d’Abram, prit donc sa servante Agar et la donna pour femme à Abram, son mari. Il y avait alors dix ans qu’Abram séjournait au pays de Canaan.4Il s’unit à Agar et elle devint enceinte. Quand elle vit qu’elle attendait un enfant, elle se mit à mépriser sa maîtresse.5Alors Saraï dit à Abram: C’est toi qui es responsable de l’injure qui m’est faite. J’ai poussé ma servante dans tes bras et depuis qu’elle s’est vue enceinte, elle me méprise. Que l’Eternel soit juge entre nous.6Abram lui répondit: Ta servante est en ton pouvoir. Agis envers elle comme bon te semblera. Alors Saraï la traita si durement que celle-ci s’enfuit.7L’ange de l’Eternel la rencontra près d’une source d’eau dans le désert, celle qui se trouve sur le chemin de Shour.8Il lui demanda: Agar, servante de Saraï, d’où viens-tu et où vas-tu? Elle répondit: Je m’enfuis de chez Saraï, ma maîtresse.9L’ange de l’Eternel lui dit: Retourne auprès de ta maîtresse et humilie-toi devant elle.10Et il ajouta: Je te donnerai de très nombreux descendants; ils seront si nombreux qu’on ne pourra pas les compter[2]. (Gn 17:20; Gn 25:13)11Puis il ajouta: Tu attends un enfant: ce sera un garçon. Tu l’appelleras Ismaël (Dieu entend) car l’Eternel t’a entendue ╵dans ta détresse.12Ton fils sera comme un âne sauvage: lui, il s’opposera à tous et tous s’opposeront à lui, mais il assurera sa place ╵en face de tous ses semblables.13Agar se demanda: Ai-je réellement vu ici même celui qui me voit? Et elle appela l’Eternel qui lui avait parlé du nom de Atta-El-Roï (C’est toi le Dieu qui me voit).14C’est pourquoi on appelle ce puits: Beer-Lachaï-Roï (le Puits du Vivant-qui-me-voit). Il se trouve entre Qadesh et Béred.15Agar donna le jour à un fils que son père appela Ismaël.16Abram avait quatre-vingt-six ans quand Agar lui donna ce fils.
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. (Gn 15:2; Gn 21:9; Ga 4:24)2And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[1] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.3So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. (Gn 12:5)4And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.[2] (1S 1:6)5And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” (Gn 31:53; 1S 24:12)6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.7The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. (Gn 25:18; Ex 15:22)8And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”9The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.”10The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” (Gn 17:20; Gn 21:18; Gn 25:12)11And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael,[3] because the Lord has listened to your affliction. (Gn 29:32)12He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” (Gn 21:20; Gn 25:18; Jb 39:5)13So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”[4] for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”[5] (Gn 32:30; Ex 19:21; Ex 33:20; Jg 13:22)14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;[6] it lies between Kadesh and Bered. (Gn 14:7; Gn 20:1; Gn 24:62; Gn 25:11; Nb 13:26)15And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
1Sarai, Abrams Frau, hatte ihm nicht geboren. Sie hatte aber eine ägyptische Sklavin. Ihr Name war Hagar. (Gn 11:30)2Da sagte Sarai zu Abram: Siehe, der HERR hat mir das Gebären verwehrt. Geh zu meiner Sklavin! Vielleicht komme ich durch sie zu einem Sohn. Abram hörte auf die Stimme Sarais. (Gn 30:3)3Sarai, Abrams Frau, nahm also die Ägypterin Hagar, ihre Sklavin, zehn Jahre, nachdem sich Abram im Land Kanaan niedergelassen hatte, und gab sie Abram, ihrem Mann, zur Frau.4Er ging zu Hagar und sie wurde schwanger. Als sie sah, dass sie schwanger war, galt ihre Herrin in ihren Augen nichts mehr.5Da sagte Sarai zu Abram: Das Unrecht, das ich erfahre, komme über dich! Ich selbst habe meine Sklavin in deinen Schoß gegeben. Aber kaum sieht sie, dass sie schwanger ist, und schon gelte ich in ihren Augen nichts mehr. Der HERR richte zwischen mir und dir.6Da sagte Abram zu Sarai: Siehe, sie ist deine Sklavin, sie ist in deiner Hand. Tu mit ihr, was in deinen Augen gut erscheint! Da misshandelte Sarai sie und Hagar lief ihr davon.7Der Engel des HERRN fand sie an einer Wasserquelle in der Wüste, an der Quelle auf dem Weg nach Schur.8Er sprach: Hagar, Sklavin Sarais, woher kommst du und wohin gehst du? Sie sagte: Vor Sarai, meiner Herrin, bin ich davongelaufen.9Da sprach der Engel des HERRN zu ihr: Kehr zurück zu deiner Herrin und beuge dich unter ihre Hand!10Der Engel des HERRN sprach zu ihr: Mehren, ja mehren werde ich deine Nachkommen, sodass man sie wegen ihrer Menge nicht mehr zählen kann. (Gn 17:20; Gn 25:12)11Weiter sprach der Engel des HERRN zu ihr:
Siehe, du bist schwanger, du wirst einen Sohn gebären / und du sollst ihm den Namen Ismael - Gott hört - geben, / denn der HERR hat dich in deinem Leid gehört.12Er wird ein Mensch sein wie ein Wildesel. / Seine Hand auf allen, die Hand aller auf ihm! / Allen seinen Brüdern gegenüber wird er wohnen.13Da nannte sie den Namen des HERRN, der zu ihr gesprochen hatte: Du bist El-Roï - Gott schaut auf mich -. Denn sie sagte: Gewiss habe ich dem nachgeschaut, der auf mich schaut!14Deswegen nennt man den Brunnen Beer-Lahai-Roï - Brunnen des Lebendigen, der auf mich schaut -. Siehe, er liegt zwischen Kadesch und Bered.15Hagar gebar dem Abram einen Sohn. Und Abram gab seinem Sohn, den ihm Hagar geboren hatte, den Namen Ismael.16Abram war sechsundachtzig Jahre alt, als Hagar Ismael für Abram gebar.
